Jorge Posada officially retired from baseball at a press conference Tuesday at Yankee Stadium.

"I could never wear another uniform," Posada told the friends, family and press gathered around him. "I will forever be a Yankee." The 40-year-old was a five-time All-Star, collecting 1,664 hits, 275 home runs and 1,065 RBI during a 17-year major league career. He also won four World Series rings.

The presser will get underway at 11 a.m. ET. Posada had a desire to continue his playing career at the beginning of this offseason, but it fizzled out as interest in him failed to grow. New York's plans regarding Posada didn't change when they shipped young designated hitter Jesus Montero to the Mariners and the lifelong Yankee didn't find an enticing offering elsewhere. The 40-year-old, a five-time All-Star, has a .273 lifetime batting average over 17 major league seasons to go along with 1,664 hits, 275 home runs and 1,065 RBI. He won four World Series rings.

While Jorge Posada has yet to officially announce his retirement, he told Adam Berry of MLB.com on Wednesday that he is not planning to play this season.

"I'm not getting prepared for another season, that's for sure," said Posada. "I tried, and it's not in me. ... More and more days started going by, and nothing's going in the right direction." The 40-year-old said he plans to talk things over with his family over the next couple of weeks before making an official announcement about his future, but it sounds like he's dead set on retirement. Posada, a five-time All-Star, has a .273 lifetime batting average over 17 major league seasons to go along with 275 career home runs and 1,065 RBI.

Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com reports that there is a "very small chance" the Yankees could bring Jorge Posada back as a designated hitter.

Heyman estimates there is a one percent chance of it happening. It was reportedly earlier this month that Posada will retire, and, barring something unexpected, it's still likely to happen. The Yankees have much better options for their DH slot, anyway. Carlos Pena and Johnny Damon are possibilities.

Posada had reportedly drawn interest from the Rays, Phillies, and Orioles as a backup catcher but reportedly didn't have an interest in being evaluated as a second-tier player. The 40-year-old indicated that he would continue playing in 2012 if he could find the right situation, however, he may have had a hard time finding a guaranteed major-league deal. Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com has since corroborated the report. Posada will finish seventh all-time in home runs among catchers, in addition to five All-Star appearances and four World Series rings.

Marc Topkin of the St. Petersburg Times speculates that talk of the Rays acquiring free agent veteran Jorge Posada "sounds like much more of a backup plan."

The Rays already have three catchers on their depth chart in Jose Molina, Jose Lobaton and Robinson Chirinos, and are likely to use Matt Joyce as their primary designated hitter. Posada is also drawing interest from the Orioles and Phillies, so he's not quite out of options yet. The 40-year-old hit .235/.315/.398 in 387 plate appearances this past season for the Yankees.

Javier Maymi of ESPNDeportes.com reports that the Rays are interested in Jorge Posada.

The Rays are looking at him for a utility-type role between first base, designated hitter and catcher. Jose Lobaton or Robinson Chirinos figure to be the primary backup for the newly-signed Jose Molina, so the 40-year-old would likely only be an emergency option behind the plate. Posada's father told Maymi that he has also drawn interest from the Orioles and Phillies, but that he has yet to make a decision about whether he'll play in 2012.

Jon Heyman of SI.com reports that Jorge Posada would like to continue playing in 2012 and his preference would be to sign with the Marlins.

Posada lives in Miami and at this point in his career would probably be fine with being a backup, so there could be a fit. The Marlins have Brett Hayes to back up John Buck, but they might value Posada's leadership and ability to also fill in at first base. He'd have to be reasonable about his salary expectations, though.

According to Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com, Jorge Posada's agent Seth Levinson denied a report that he has reached out to the Mets.

"There is no truth to that report, said Levinson. None." It doesn't make much sense, anyway, as Posada would be of little use to a National League team, especially one that is in search of a defensive-minded backstop. The 40-year-old appears determined to continue his playing career, but he may have a hard time finding a guaranteed major-league deal.

The Mets are looking for looking for a defensive-minded backup to Josh Thole, so a match appears unlikely. However, it at least shows that Posada is interested in continuing his playing career. The 40-year-old batted just .235/.315/.398 with 14 home runs, 44 RBI and a .714 OPS over 387 plate appearances this season. He isn't expected to return to the Yankees, but recently told reporters that he has drawn interest from teams as a backup catcher or part-time designated hitter.

Jorge Posada is resigned to the fact that he will not be re-upping with the Yankees this winter.

The Yanks have no interest in bringing back the 40-year-old free agent, who batted just .235/.315/.398 this past season in New York. Posada told reporters that he's already drawn interest from several other teams and is looking for a gig as a backup catcher or part-time designated hitter.

The Yankees have expressed little interest in re-signing free agent Jorge Posada.

Posada's four-year, $52.4 million contract expires after this season, where he posted a career worst .235/.315/.398 with 14 home runs. The 40-year old switch-hitter was the Yankees best offensive player in the postseason, however, collecting six hits and four walks in all five games (.429/.570/571). After being used almost exclusively at DH, he'll enter a free agent market that's flooded with one-dimensional DH types.

Jorge Posada will serve as the designated hitter for Game 5 of the ALDS against the Tigers on Thursday night.

No big changes here, as the Yankees are going with the same lineup as the first four games of the series. Posada was the only member of the starting lineup without a hit in Tuesday's 10-1 win, but he is 4-for-10 with a triple, four walks and four runs scored during the series.

One of Posada's hits was his first triple of the year. He's 3-for-6 with two runs scored in the Yankees' first two ALDS contests.

Jorge Posada will serve as the designated hitter in Game 1 of the ALDS against the Tigers on Friday night.

He'll bat seventh against Justin Verlander. The Tigers won't throw any left-handed starters, so we don't figure to see a lot of Jesus Montero at designated hitter, aside from late-game pinch-hit appearances.

Yankees manager Joe Girardi said Thursday that Jorge Posada will the primary designated hitter against the Tigers' right-handed starters during the ALDS.

As expected. Posada finished the season with a disappointing .235/.315/.398 batting line, but he had 14 homers and an .814 OPS against right-handed pitching. There's little doubt that he can still be a weapon. The Tigers don't have any left-handed starters, so we will likely only see Jesus Montero late in games.

Jorge Posada smacked a pinch-hit, two-run single in the second game of Wednesday's doubleheader against the Rays.

His hit turned out to be the game-winner, handing the Yankees another AL East title. This hass been one of the most difficult seasons for the 40-year-old Posada. But after ending May with a .623 OPS, he has climbed up to a more respectable .717 mark.

Posada went 1-for-2 in the contest. The free-agent-to-be hopes to go back to catching on at least a part-time basis next year, probably for another team.

Jorge Posada is not in the Yankees' starting lineup Thursday afternoon against the Orioles.

Alex Rodriguez will serve as the designated hitter against the right-hander Alfredo Simon while Eric Chavez makes the start at third base. MLB will likely push to get this game in, but the forecast for the Baltimore area isn't very promising.
