Sat Mar 29 201412:21Red Sox release reliever Francisco Cordero
Red Sox released RHP Francisco Cordero.
Cordero was mulling an assignment to Triple-A but ultimately decided against it. He hasn't allowed a run in eight innings this spring while posting an 8/1 K/BB ratio, so the 38-year-old might be able to find a major league gig elsewhere. Cordero didn't pitch at all last season after putting up an ugly 7.55 ERA across 47 appearances in 2012.

Sat Mar 29 201410:43Cordero expected to be released
Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington doesn't expect Francisco Cordero to accept an assignment to Triple-A.
Cordero hasn't allowed a run in eight innings this spring while posting an 8/1 K/BB ratio, but it wasn't enough for him to secure a spot in Boston's bullpen. The 38-year-old is expected to opt for free agency and seek a home elsewhere.

Fri Mar 28 201409:29Francisco Cordero weighing Triple-A spot
Francisco Cordero is considering whether to accept a Triple-A assignment by the Red Sox.
He'll look for a major league job elsewhere first but could remain with Boston if a big league opportunity doesn't exist. Cordero has been unscored upon in eight frames this spring, posting an 8/1 K/BB ratio, so it's possible someone else will come calling. The 38-year-old didn't pitch at all last season after putting up an ugly 7.55 ERA across 47 appearances in 2012.

Sun Feb 16 201412:17Red Sox ink Francisco Cordero to minors deal
Red Sox signed RHP Francisco Cordero to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.
Cordero didn't pitch at all last season after putting up an ugly 7.55 ERA across 47 appearances in 2012. He'll also turn 39 in May and has seen his velocity and strikeout rate dip in recent years. That said, the former closer is worth taking a shot on on a non-guaranteed deal. He'll compete for a middle relief role.

Thu Apr 4 201313:58Francisco Cordero won't pitch in 2013
Francisco Cordero will undergo surgery on his left (non-throwing) shoulder later this month.
Cordero never latched on with a team this winter and can now be ruled out for the entire 2013 season. The 37-year-old right-hander hopes to play winter ball and hasn't given up on eventually returning to the bigs. He posted a 7.55 ERA in 39 1/3 innings last season.

Mon Sep 3 201212:57Cordero dealing with 'cranky' shoulder
Francisco Cordero is experiencing a "cranky" shoulder.
Cordero's sprained toe ligament is healed, but his season could be over because of shoulder soreness that he's developed between throwing sessions. The impending free agent right-hander won't have much of a market this winter, especially if he's unable to make it back this month.

Sun Aug 5 201210:38Francisco Cordero to get foot checked out
Francisco Cordero will have his right foot examined by a Houston doctor this week.
Cordero has been dealing with inflammation in the sesamoid bone in his right foot for a few weeks and was finally placed on the disabled list Friday. Jeff Keppinger and Jason Castro previously dealt with a similar injury and had to have the bone removed, costing them 3-4 months of action. However, Astros manager Brad Mills said surgery is not considered an option at this point for Cordero.

Fri Jul 27 201217:28Cordero unavailable due to toe injury
Francisco Cordero is unavailable Friday due to a toe injury.
It's a minor thing, so consider him day-to-day for now. Wilton Lopez would presumably get the ball in a save situation and should take the closer gig away from the struggling Cordero in time.

Thu Jul 26 201219:37Francisco Cordero unavailable Thursday
Francisco Cordero is unavailable Thursday against the Pirates.
Cordero, who was acquired from the Blue Jays last week, has blown back-to-back save chances while allowing six runs on five hits and three walks over 2 1/3 innings. Wilton Lopez would get the ball in a save situation Thursday and figures to take over the gig before long.

Sat Jul 21 201218:39Francisco Cordero will serve as Astros closer
With Brett Myers traded to the White Sox, Francisco Cordero will take over as the Astros' full-time closer.
Cordero was acquired from the Blue Jays on Friday in the Brandon Lyon deal. He has struggled this season, posting a 5.60 ERA, 1.76 WHIP and 26/14 K/BB ratio through his first 35 1/3 innings. He does have plenty of experience in the role, however, converting 329 saves in his big league career. He's now a must own in all formats.

Wed May 9 201201:14Francisco Cordero takes blown save, loss
Francisco Cordero took an ugly loss Tuesday, giving up five runs in the ninth against the A's.
Cordero blew the save in a 3-2 game by giving up a double, a sac bunt and an RBI single. After a stolen base and two intentional walks, he then gave up a walkoff grand slam to Brandon Inge. The poor outing may well cost him his role as Toronto's interim closer, as his ERA is all of the way up to 9.53. The Jays might want to go to Jason Frasor and Darren Oliver in save opportunities.

Tue May 1 201222:58Cordero blows save, vultures victory
Francisco Cordero took his second consecutive blown save on Tuedsay, giving up an RBI single to Michael Young in the ninth inning.
Cordero had started out strong as a fill-in for the injured Sergio Santos, but he's now blown consecutive chances and his ERA has ballooned to 5.73. Perhaps the Blue Jays would be better served trying Luis Perez or Casey Janssen in the night-inning role until Santos returns.

Mon Apr 23 201222:53Francisco Cordero nails down second save
Francisco Cordero notched his second save of the season with a scoreless ninth inning in Monday's win over the Royals.
Cordero allowed a leadoff single to Mike Moustakas but then got Brayan Pena to ground into a double play and Mitch Maier to pop out. The veteran closer has just a 4.50 ERA and 1.62 WHIP in the early going, but he should be a solid enough stopper while Sergio Santos is on the shelf.

Sun Apr 22 201208:30Francisco Cordero to serve as closer
Francisco Cordero will serve as the Blue Jays' closer while Sergio Santos (shoulder) is on the disabled list.
The Jays don't anticipate a lengthy stay on the DL for Santos, but they have a nice fall-back option in Cordero. The veteran right-hander has given up three runs in his first six innings this season but has also recorded six strikeouts. Santos owners should pick him up right away.

Tue Feb 7 201204:11Cordero content with setup role
Francisco Cordero understands his role as the Blue Jays' setup man in 2012, vowing to "treat the eighth inning like the ninth and get us to [Sergio] Santos."
Cordero added, "They explained to me what my role is going to be, I agreed to it, and I'll be more than happy to do it." The 36-year-old has been a closer for most of his career and is 12th on the all-time saves list. With anointed closer Sergio Santos amassing eight blown saves in 39 career chances, Cordero could accrue more value as the season progresses.
