Colvin signed a minor-league contract with the White Sox on Sunday, MLB.com's Scott Merkin reports.

Colvin has some level of pedigree as a former first-round pick by the Cubs in 2006, but at this stage in his career, the 29-year-old's flaws as a hitter have been too frequently exposed at the MLB level. Over 1,316 career plate appearances in the big leagues, Colvin has produced a .239/.287/.446 batting line while striking out 26.7 percent of the time. Without a 40-man roster spot to hang his hat on, Colvin will have a difficult time reaching the majors again.

Colvin opted out of his minor league contract with the Marlins and is now a free agent, MLB.com's Joe Frisaro reports.

Colvin did not make the Marlins' Opening Day roster and was unlikely to be called up to Miami anytime soon, so he decided to seek another opportunity elsewhere.

Colvin will likely head back to Triple-A Fresno rather than electing free agency and looking for work elsewhere. He could find himself back on the Giants' roster in September when they expand, but for now will work on improving at the plate, where he hit just .223/.268/.381 over 57 games with the big-league club this season.

He will have to decide whether he will accept the assignment or elect to become a free agent and test the waters elsewhere. It was reported that Colvin was given his release by the club, but it turns out the team just sent him down instead. Colvin is hitting .223/.268/.381 this season and could be recalled by the club in September.

Updating a previous report, Colvin was not released, and instead optioned to Triple-A Fresno, Alex Pavlovic of the Bay Area News Group reports.

Colvin's release was reported earlier Wednesday evening, but it turns out the Giants had one remaining option left. Although the outfielder has been cold lately, there's a chance he could be back with the team when rosters expand in September.

Desperate for some offense, the team is once against shaking up its roster, bumping not only Colvin but Dan Uggla as well. However, corresponding moves were not immediately announced.

CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports that the Orioles are only willing to give Tyler Colvin a minor league contract after discovering a back issue during his physical.

Colvin has yet to accept the minor league deal, so he remains a free agent. He could wind up still signing with the O's but seems likely to see if he can get a guaranteed deal somewhere else first. Given the thoroughness of Baltimore's physicals, it's possible other teams' doctors won't find anything wrong with Colvin's back.
