Fri Jul 31 201514:47Baker released by Marlins on Friday
Baker was released by the Marlins on Friday, Joe Frisaro of MLB.com reports.
Baker continues to work his way back from an oblique injury, but he will be without a team when he does return. The veteran utility man struggled this season, battling just .208/.288/375 with three home runs and eight RBI in 41 games this season. With the Marlins out of the playoff hunt, they'll likely see what they've got in some of their younger players, making Baker more expendable.

Baker (oblique) was placed on the 15-day disabled list Friday retroactive to July 8.
Baker's move to the disabled list isn't too surprising, as the All-Star break will provide extra rest without missing extra games. He'll be eligible to rejoin the team July 23, with newly-signed Casey McGehee taking his place on the 25-man in a corresponding move.

Baker (oblique) remains out of the lineup Thursday against the Reds.
Baker will sit for the second straight game after being lifted from Tuesday's game with the oblique strain. Justin Bour will start at first base again Monday, batting cleanup for the Marlins.
Wed Jul 8 201516:14Baker (oblique) out of lineup Wednesday against Boston
Baker (oblique) is out of the lineup Wednesday against Boston.
An oblique strain forced Baker into an early exit from Tuesday's contest. He'll be replaced by Justin Bour at first base against right-hander Rick Porcello. Consider Baker day-to-day ahead of Thursday's game against the Reds.

Baker left Tuesday's game after one inning with left oblique pain, Joe Frisaro of MLB.com reports.
The Marlins list Baker as day-to-day after he aggravated the oblique, presumably in his first at-bat against Boston. With a right-hander in Rick Porcello due up for the Red Sox on Wednesday, Baker figures to sit in favor of Justin Bour, as he would regardless of health.

Baker was lifted from Tuesday's game against the Red Sox after one inning.
It wasn't clear what was ailing Baker, and a reason for his removal was not immediately provided. Michael Morse came in from left field to man first base in place of Baker, who should be considered day-to-day until more information becomes available.

Baker will bat cleanup and play first base Tuesday against Toronto.
Baker is getting his first start since Saturday, where he went 2-for-5 with two RBI in a loss to the Rockies. He is 6-for-14 in his career against Toronto starter Mark Buehrle, who will be on the mound Tuesday.

Baker started at first base Wednesday for the Marlins and delivered a solo home run, his only hit in four at-bats.
The long ball was Baker's second of the season in 34 at-bats. He's been mostly limited to a reserve roll for the Marlins this year, but may see his playing time increase in the short term in a platoon with Justin Bour while Mike Morse (finger) remains on the DL.
Sat May 9 201518:18Baker in lineup for Saturday's game against Giants
Baker is in the lineup for Saturday's game against the Giants, Joe Frisaro of MLB.com reports.
With Dee Gordon (leg) sitting out a second straight game, Baker will fill in at second base and bat sixth against San Francisco starter Madison Baumgarner. Baker takes over for Donovan Solano, who started in Gordon's place Friday.

Baker finished the spring slashing .118/.205/.176 with three RBI in 18 games.
The Marlins made several offseason acquisitions in the infield, largely relegating Baker to a utility role this season. The righty likely won't see as many at bats as he's accustomed to, but when he does it will likely come against left-handed pitching as he boasts a career slash line of .301/.354/.514 against southpaws.

Baker collected a pair of hits, score a run and drove in an RBI during Thursday's loss to the Nationals.
Baker started in place of Garret Jones at first base with lefty Gio Gonzalez on the mound for Washington. The veteran utility man continues to be an asset against opposing lefties, slashing .322/.365/.470 in 115 at-bats this year. Unfortunately, his meager .195/.237/.310 line against right-handers leaves him as little more than a platoon option at this stage of his career.
Sat Aug 23 201410:11Baker 3-5 with run scored in Friday's win over Rockies
Baker went 3-for-5 with a run scored in Friday's win over the Rockies.
It was a typical Coors Field affair with the two teams combining for 18 runs on 29 hits. Baker drew the start at first bast with a lefty on the mound and batted second for the Marlins, which represented just the second time that Baker started in the two-hole since early April. The Marlins are searching for consistency at the top of the order, and Baker could draw more work there in a platoon situation given his solid .301/.350/.473 slash against left-handed pitching.

Baker tripled and drove in a run during the Marlins' 2-1 victory over the Diamondbacks on Saturday.
Getting the start at first base with an opposing lefty on the mound, the veteran followed a Giancarlo Stanton single with a rare three-bagger to put the Marlins on the board. Baker holds a modest .256/.304/.391 slash for the season but has once again been a reliable option against left-handed pitching (.292/.343/.449 in 89 at-bats). He'll continue to spell Garret Jones at first base when a southpaw is on the mound.

Baker hit a pinch-hit two-run homer in Wednesday's loss to the Cardinals.
The ninth-inning blast represented the Marlins' only runs of the day in the 5-2 defeat. Baker has been a bench player the last seven games and won't see any extended action unless any of Christian Yelich, Marcell Ozuna or Giancarlo Stanton are forced to miss time due to injury.
Thu Aug 7 201408:23Baker 2-4 with RBI in Wednesday's loss to Pirates
Baker went 2-for-4 with an RBI in Wednesday's loss to the Pirates.
Getting the start at first base over Garret Jones with a left-hander on the mound, Baker posted his first multi-hit effort since July 6. He's seen sporadic playing time as a platoon player for the team while posting a .253/.299/.360 line over 150 at-bats this year. The Marlins figure to continue to take advantage of matchups with Baker as they try to squeeze every bit of production from several lackluster veterans in the lineup.
Sat Jul 5 201417:55Baker hits go-ahead RBI single to beat STL
Jeff Baker hit a go-ahead RBI single in the ninth inning Saturday in the Marlins' 6-5 win in St. Louis.
Baker's go-ahead single followed a game-tying RBI double by Casey McGehee. The Cardinals were up 5-1 at one point but their bullpen failed them down the stretch. Baker is batting .231/.285/.359 on the season.

Thu May 1 201422:48Jeff Baker dealing with the flu
Jeff Baker has been unavailable the last two days due to the flu.
He should be fine in a day or two. Baker is off to a rough start for the Marlins, batting just .100/.208/.125 over his first 16 games.

Sun Mar 30 201411:15Jeff Baker to start at 2B, bat cleanup
Jeff Baker will start at second base and bat cleanup for the Marlins on Opening Day against Rockies left-hander Jorge De La Rosa.
With Rafael Furcal (hamstring) on the disabled list, the Marlins have decided to go with Baker at second over Derek Dietrich, though the two could wind up sharing the position. Baker should also wind up seeing plenty of playing time at first base versus southpaws. He needs to be owned in deeper fantasy leagues.

Wed Mar 26 201417:35Jeff Baker doubles twice against Braves
Jeff Baker, starting at second base once again, doubled twice in the loss to the Braves on Wednesday.
It hardly seems worth the defensive downgrade, but it looks like Baker might start at second base, at least on a part-time basis, while Rafael Furcal is sidelined at the beginning of the season. That second base eligibility would make him a more interesting flier in NL-only leagues.
