Thu Mar 14 201320:17Lee turns down Yankees, will remain retired
Tim Brown of Yahoo! Sports reports that Derrek Lee has turned down an offer from the Yankees and will remain retired.
It's not a surprise after Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said earlier this week that he was "not optimistic" about the club signing the 37-year-old first baseman. If Lee's playing days are indeed over, he'll finish with a .281/.365/.495 career batting line, 331 homers and 1,078 RBI over 15 seasons.

Mon Mar 11 201311:21Yanks' Cashman 'not optimistic' on Derrek Lee
Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said he's "not optimistic" the club will sign Derrek Lee.
Cashman confirmed a report that he has reached out to the pseudo-retired first baseman, and on Monday he didn't rule out the possibility of signing him. It doesn't sound likely to happen, though. Lee batted .267 with 19 home runs over 113 games in 2011 for the Orioles and Pirates before taking 2012 off.

Mon Mar 11 201308:17Yankees trying to lure Lee out of retirement
David Waldstein of the New York Times reports that the Yankees have tried to lure Derrek Lee out of retirement to play first base while Mark Teixeira (wrist) is out.
Waldstein says there is "no deal pending," but Lee "was interested and the situation could always be revisited." Lee, 37, has never officially retired, but he chose not to play in 2012 after he was unable to find an opportunity that suited him. He batted .267 with 19 home runs over 113 games in 2011 for the Orioles and Pirates. It's an interesting thought, but it seems unlikely that Lee would be ready for the start of the season even if he signed soon, so by the time he's ready to play he might only be needed for a few weeks. It could be the Yanks preparing for the fact that Teixeira might eventually need surgery.

Fri Jun 29 201218:22Report: Dodgers 'lukewarm' on Derrek Lee
According to Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com, the Dodgers are "lukewarm" to the idea of signing free agent first baseman Derrek Lee and want to explore other options first.
Lee lives in Los Angeles and while the 36-year-old didn't sign with a team over the winter, he is said to be open to resuming his career. The Dodgers enter play Friday with a lousy .243/.302/.339 batting line and a .641 OPS out of the first base position this season, so it sounds like an obvious fit, but they are apparently considering options on the trade front first.

Mon Jun 11 201219:11Derrek Lee open to playing in right situation
Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com reports that Derrek Lee is still open to playing this season in the "right opportunity."
Rosenthal reported the same thing during spring training, and evidently it still holds true. Lee, 36, batted .267/.325/.446 with 19 home runs and 59 RBI last season for the Orioles and Pirates and will probably field some calls from interested parties, but it remains to be seen if it will be enough to lure him away from home.

Wed Mar 7 201215:13Report: Derrek Lee open to continuing career
Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com reports that Derrek Lee is open to continuing his career if the "right opportunity" arises.
In other words, his status hasn't changed much from a couple of months ago. Lee, 36, batted just .267 with a .771 OPS overall last season, but he hit .337/.398/.584 with seven home runs, 18 RBI and a .982 OPS over 113 plate appearances following a mid-season trade to the Pirates. Still, it's hard to imagine he'll get much of a guarantee at this point. If he can't return on his own terms, retirement appears to be a realistic possibility.

Thu Jan 19 201212:36Retirement on the table for Derrek Lee?
According to Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.com, two GMs think retirement is a "viable option" for Derrek Lee if he doesn't find the right deal before spring training.
"It has to be the perfect situation and the perfect fit at the right dollars,'' said one GM, when asked what Lee is looking for. The 36-year-old first baseman batted just .267 with a .771 OPS last season, but showed some signs of life by hitting .337/.398/.584 with seven home runs, 18 RBI and a .982 OPS over 113 plate appearances following a mid-season trade to the Pirates. He could still produce for a number of teams, but given the multitude of aging sluggers available in free agency, it's unlikely he would get much of guarantee. Lee hinted at retirement last year, so he may ultimately decide that this is the appropriate time to walk away.

Sun Dec 25 201121:07Free agent 1Bs waiting for Fielder decision
Jon Paul Morosi of FOXSports.com reports that teams considering upgrades at first base include the Brewers, Cubs, Nationals, Indians, Mariners, Orioles, Rangers, Rays and Pirates.
Prince Fielder is obviously the big fish left, but his situation remains muddled and a frontrunner has yet to emerge for his services. While the Fielder saga drags on, quality free agent first baseman Derrek Lee, Carlos Pena and Casey Kotchman wait their turn. Of the three, Morosi writes, "If anything, their continued availability is confirmation that teams are holding out hope that Fielder will fall into their price range." Morosi thinks first baseman Anthony Rizzo, Carlos Lee, Mark Trumbo and Billy Butler could also be available via trade. "Because it's so late, not all of those teams will find their long-term first basemen this offseason," a National League executive said. "There's going to be a need a year from now, too."

Tue Dec 13 201123:24Report: Bucs still interested in Derrek Lee
CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports that the Pirates still have interest in free agent Derrek Lee.
Some assumed that the Pirates were ready to move on after acquiring Casey McGehee from the Brewers and tendering a contract to Garrett Jones, but it turns out they may still have room for Lee in their lineup. And why not? The 36-year-old first baseman batted .337/.398/.584 with seven home runs, 18 RBI and a .982 OPS over 113 plate appearances after joining Pittsburgh at the trade deadline this July.

Wed Dec 7 201119:49Derrek Lee not interested in Indians
Paul Hoynes of the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports that Derrek Lee is not interested in signing with the Indians.
Jon Paul Morosi of FOXSports.com reported Tuesday that Lee was on the Indians' radar, but evidently the interest isn't mutual. Lee is expected to decline the Pirates' arbitration offer but is reportedly going to continue his career after mulling retirement. The Indians could look to Andruw Jones, Ryan Ludwick or Mike Cameron in their pursuit of a right-handed bat.

Tue Dec 6 201116:47Indians looking for RH bat
Jon Paul Morosi of FOXSports.com reports that the Indians are in the market for a right-handed bat, and Derrek Lee, Andruw Jones, Ryan Ludwick and Mike Cameron are on their radar.
The Indians have grown impatient with Matt LaPorta, and adding Lee on a short-term deal should be relatively inexpensive and give them a more reliable bat. Jones and Cameron would be part-timers, but Jones did mash against left-handed pitching in 2011.

Sun Dec 4 201111:43Pirates GM 'optimistic' on Derrek Lee
Pirates general manager Neal Huntington is optimistic about re-signing free agent first baseman Derrek Lee.
The Pirates offered Lee arbitration, and he could wind up accepting if he doesn't think he'll get more on the open market. The 36-year-old is also considering retirement. "We're optimistic about an arbitration settlement or negotiated contract," Huntington said. "But we're also preparing to move on if he chooses to play somewhere else or decides not to play next year." If Lee doesn't return, Garrett Jones is the most likely internal option to fill the void, though he could platoon with prospect Matt Hague or veterans Jake Fox or Nick Evans.

Wed Nov 23 201122:27Pirates offer arb. to Derrek Lee
The Pirates offered arbitration to Derrek Lee.
And they're likely hoping that he will accept. Lee batted .337/.398/.584 with seven home runs in 101 at-bats down the stretch for Pittsburgh this past year while also playing his usual brand of steady defense at first base. At age 36 he might rather move on to a contending team, but the Pirates clearly would like him to return. Chris Snyder and Ryan Ludwick were not offered arbitration.

Fri Nov 4 201111:00Pirates would like to re-sign Derrek Lee
The Pirates would like to re-sign free agent Derrek Lee.
It's not surprising, given that the Bucs have a hole at first base and Lee batted .337/.398/.584 with seven homers over 101 at-bats for them down the stretch. What remains to be seen, though is whether the 36-year-old Lee has interest in returning to the Pirates or might prefer going to a team that has a better shot to contend.

Wed Sep 21 201119:16Derrek Lee hits fifth homer of September
Derrek Lee went 3-for-4 with a homer and two RBI against the Diamondbacks on Wednesday.
Lee is hitting .387 with five homers and 15 RBI in 62 at-bats this month and .336 with 10 homers in 137 at-bats during the season half. A couple of months ago, it looked like his career was nearing an end. Now he figures to be in demand as a free agent this winter.

Sat Sep 3 201118:20Derrek Lee's grand slam lifts Bucs past Cubs
Derrek Lee smashed a go-ahead grand slam in the ninth inning of Saturday's 7-5 win over the Cubs.
Lee finished 3-for-5 with five total RBI in the impressive comeback victory. He spent the last three-plus weeks nursing a wrist fracture but should see regular playing time down the stretch. The veteran first baseman is worth a look in NL-only leagues.

Pirates activated 1B Derrek Lee from the 15-day disabled list.
Lee has been sidelined since August 10 with a small fracture in his left wrist, but he took batting practice Friday without any issues and is good to go. The trade acquisition batted .278/.316/.722 in just five games for the Pirates before the injury.

Sat Sep 3 201110:15Derrek Lee could return on Saturday
Derrek Lee (wrist) could be activated from the disabled list Saturday.
Lee took batting practice Friday and launched a few balls into the Wrigley Field shrubbery beyond the center field fence. Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said Lee will get the bulk of the playing time at first base when he returns. "We need to find out what Derrek's capable of, and how he fits here," Hurdle said. "Is there a future? I don't know. I don't think he knows."

Tue Aug 30 201111:35Derrek Lee (wrist) takes swings, hits off tee
Derrek Lee (wrist) took swings with a bat Monday for the first time since landing on the disabled list.
Lee hit soft toss and took some swings off a tee, feeling no unexpected discomfort in his left wrist. "It's nice to finally get a bat in my hands," he said. "Hopefully it's not too much longer I'll be out there playing in real games." The Pirates are hoping to get him back by mid-September.
