The Nats are one of a handful of teams that have scouted Vazquez, but they don't make much sense as a landing spot given that they already have five viable starters. ESPN's Jim Bowden reports that more than half of the 30 teams have shown interest in Vazquez, who is expected to decide after the World Baseball Classic whether he'll make a comeback in 2013. If he does return, it's expected to be for a contender.

Vazquez, who is considering a comeback, has also been scouted by the Red Sox, Rays, Nationals and Royals. Mon Apr 2 201220:53Vazquez doesn't intend to pitch this season
Javier Vazquez said Monday that he isn't officially retired, but has no intention of pitching this season.
"I want to leave the door open in case I want to play, but right now I don't see myself playing," said Vazquez. "For me to be ready in July or sometime in the summer, I'd have to start throwing soon. Right now, I don't have any desire." Vazquez had a 1.92 ERA over his final 19 starts last season, but passed over the opportunity for a lucrative contract in order to spend time with his family. The 35-year-old right-hander hasn't ruled out the possibility of pitching for his native Puerto Rico in the World Baseball Classic next year, but a comeback in MLB is unlikely.

Thu Jan 5 201208:50Marlins convinced Javier Vazquez is retiring
According to Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.com, the Marlins were "absolutely, positively convinced" that Javier Vazquez was retiring before agreeing to trade for Carlos Zambrano.
Vazquez finished 2011 with a 1.92 ERA and 115/19 K/BB ratio over 126 2/3 innings in his final 19 starts, but he said right after the season that he was leaning toward retirement. The Marlins were hoping to convince him otherwise, but switching gears and taking a risk on Zambrano would seem to indicate that he's going to call it a career. The 35-year-old right-hander has a 4.22 ERA and 165 wins over 14 seasons in the big leagues.

Mon Oct 31 201109:47Marlins hoping Javy Vazquez won't retire
The Marlins are hoping that 35-year-old righty Javier Vazquez will put off retirement another year.
Vazquez dazzled down the stretch, going 5-0 with a 0.71 ERA in September to even out a roller coaster season. He's hinted all year that he might retire in order to spend more time with his family in Puerto Rico, but perhaps the Marlins can sway his decision with a sizable offer. Joe Capozzi of the Palm Beach Post thinks a one-year, $10 million contract might get it done.

Tue Sep 27 201122:08Javier Vazquez to make decision by Dec.
Javier Vazquez will decide by December whether or not he is retiring.
He certainly showed that he has plenty left in the tank, as Vazquez held an ERA of 7.09 ERA after his June 11 outing before going on a remarkable run to wind up with a 3.69 mark. If the 35-year-old does decide to return, he'll be one of the more sought after pitchers on the market.
