Sat Mar 17 201214:32Red Sox release RHP Carlos Silva
Red Sox released RHP Carlos Silva.
Silva signed a minor league deal this offseason that would have converted to a $1 million salary if he was added to the big league roster. The 32-year-old failed to make an appearance in spring training due to pre-existing injuries and hadn't pitched in the majors since 2010.

Thu Mar 8 201211:04Red Sox were aware of Silva's shoulder issue
Rob Bradford of WEEI.com reports that the Red Sox were aware of a pre-existing condition with Carlos Silva's shoulder when they signed him to a minor league contract in January.
Silva underwent an MRI last year which showed a slight tear in his labrum. He was able to make it through his offseason rehab and throwing program without a hitch, but the issue cropped up again after he exerted himself during recent batting practice sessions. The 32-year-old is currently sidelined with shoulder inflammation and should be considered a long shot to contend for a rotation spot at this point.

Tue Mar 6 201210:24Silva shut down due to shoulder inflammation
Carlos Silva has been shut down indefinitely due to inflammation in his throwing shoulder.
Not that he had much of a chance to begin with, but Silva is now out of the running for the final spot in the Red Sox starting rotation and seems all but certain to debut this season in the minor leagues. The 32-year-old righty didn't make a single major league appearance last year.

Sun Feb 19 201212:17Silva, Aceves to be on time after all
Updating an earlier item, Carlos Silva has reported to Red Sox camp and Alfredo Aceves is expected to report later Sunday.
An earlier report suggested both pitchers would be late arrivals, but obviously that's not the case. They'll both be competing this spring for a spot in the Red Sox rotation.

Sun Feb 19 201210:38Aceves, Silva will be late for spring ball
Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine said Sunday that both Alfredo Aceves and Carlos Silva could be late arrivals to spring training.
Valentine joked that Silva, who lives in Minnesota, is "having a tough time getting out of the Midwest." Aceves is coming from his native Mexico. It's not a huge deal if they only miss a handful of days, but both pitchers are competing for a rotation spot, and they're not exactly giving new manager Valentine a good first impression.

Sat Jul 2 201116:38Yankees release veteran righty Carlos Silva
Yankees released RHP Carlos Silva.
Silva signed a minor league deal with the Yankees in early April after being released by the Cubs. The 32-year-old right-hander posted a cool 2.75 ERA and 28/6 K/BB ratio in seven minor league starts but began experiencing shoulder problems earlier this month.

Fri May 13 201122:04Silva promoted to Double-A Trenton
The Yankees have promoted Carlos Silva to Double-A Trenton.
He's slated to make his first start there Saturday. Silva gave up two runs over three innings in his first start with High-A Tampa last week. The veteran right-hander is still in the process of increasing his workload, but he could eventually be an option for the major league rotation.

Thu May 5 201108:38Silva goes three innings in first start
Carlos Silva gave up two runs over three innings in his first start with High-A Tampa on Wednesday.
Silva gave up three hits -- including a two-run homer by Cubs outfield prospect Jae-Hoon Ha -- while striking out four and walking one. He'll need a few more starts on the minor league level, but could eventually be a factor in the Yankees' starting rotation.

Wed May 4 201109:22Silva to make first minor league start Wed.
Carlos Silva is scheduled to make his first start with High-A Tampa on Wednesday.
Silva was cleared for the start after tossing three innings in extended spring training Saturday. The 32-year-old right-hander signed a minor league contract with the Yankees in early April after being released by the Cubs. He could eventually be a consideration for the rotation if Ivan Nova, Freddy Garcia or Bartolo Colon struggles.

Wed Apr 20 201108:59Silva throws bullpen session in Tampa
Carlos Silva threw 40 pitches Tuesday during his second bullpen session at the Yankees' spring training complex in Tampa.
He could face live hitters early next week. Silva signed a minor league contract with the Yankees earlier this month and looks like a better alternative for the rotation than Kevin Millwood.

Sat Apr 9 201115:36Yankees take a chance on Carlos Silva
Yankees signed RHP Carlos Silva to a minor league contract.
The deal contains an opt-out clause, but it's not clear what the date is on it. The Yankees will be on the hook only for the league minimum if Silva makes it up to the majors, with the Cubs paying the rest of his $11.5 million salary. It's really not a bad gamble on the Yank' part, as Silva was quite effective for most of last season, and they could use some more starting depth with Phil Hughes dealing with velocity issues. He'll also be teamed up with former pitching coach Larry Rothschild. Silva will initially be assigned to extended spring training to get in shape before going to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Sat Apr 9 201108:24O's not interested in Carlos Silva
The Orioles have no interest in free agent Carlos Silva.
The O's are reportedly on the lookout for starting pitching depth, but Silva evidently isn't on their radar. FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reported Friday that the right-hander is weighing "several" offers and should choose a new team soon.

Fri Apr 8 201108:12Silva weighing 'several' offers
Fox Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports free agent righty Carlos Silva is weighing "several" offers, and should choose a new team soon.
Rosenthal does not specify who any of the teams pursuing Silva are, but they sound willing to give him a major-league deal, paying him a prorated portion of the veteran's minimum on top of the roughly $11.5 million he is still owed by the Cubs. Whenever he signs, it will likely be best to keep him away from your fantasy team for some time.

Fri Apr 1 201119:25Cubs owner has no regrets about Silva
Cubs chairman Tom Ricketts has no regrets about releasing veteran right-hander Carlos Silva.
"The fact is that one of the things (GM Jim Hendry and I) talked about is it doesn't matter what a guy makes when it comes to roster decisions," Ricketts said. "We knew it was a possibility that there might not be a spot for him, and that's just the way it is. You've got to have the best team on the field, and that's what counts." The Cubs are on the hook for roughly $10 million after releasing Silva. Soon to be 32 and the owner of a 5.37 ERA since the beginning of the 2006 season, his number of suitors will be limited.

Tue Mar 29 201113:12Carlos Silva clears waivers
Carlos Silva has cleared waivers.
No surprise there. The 31-year-old registered a putrid 10.90 ERA and allowed 32 hits in 17 1/3 innings this spring in Cubs camp. If a team is going to give Silva a shot, it won't be in the form of a guaranteed roster spot.

Sun Mar 27 201118:19Yankees not interested in Silva
The Yankees have no plans to pursue the released Carlos Silva, according to YES Network's Jack Curry.
Silva had success last year under pitching coach Larry Rothschild, who left the Cubs to join the Yankees over the winter, but apparently a reunion isn't in the cards.

Sun Mar 27 201111:12Cubs cut ties with headache Carlos Silva
Cubs released RHP Carlos Silva.
He pretty much forced them into a corner with his comments Saturday. Silva had an awful spring, posting a 10.90 ERA while surrendering 32 hits over 17 1/3 innings. That said, it's easy to forget that he was quite effective in the first half last season, posting a 3.45 ERA and 1.14 WHIP while going 9-3. Some team will take a chance on him now that they don't have to worry about his bloated salary. The Cubs are on the hook for the $11.5 million owed to the right-hander this season.

Sat Mar 26 201113:17Cubs will attempt to trade Carlos Silva
The Cubs have told Carlos Silva that they'll try to trade him, but if they're unable to, they'd like him to go to the minor leagues.
Evidently the report Friday that Silva had earned a roster spot was incorrect. Andrew Cashner has been confirmed as the team's No. 5 starter, while Marcos Mateo has earned a spot in the bullpen. It's extremely unlikely the Cubs will find a trade partner to take on Silva, so if he doesn't want to go to the minors, he'll likely be released.

Fri Mar 25 201117:37Carlos Silva makes Cubs roster
Carlos Silva has won a spot on the Cubs' Opening Day roster.
Well, "won" is a pretty loose term given how poorly he's pitched this spring. What's not known yet is the role he'll fill. Silva did pitch well his last time out, and manager Mike Quade has yet to rule him out for a spot in the rotation. More likely, though, he'll be used as a long man out of the bullpen.

Wed Mar 23 201118:29Carlos Silva has much-needed solid outing
Carlos Silva had a much needed and long overdue impressive outing Wednesday, holding the A's to one run on three hits over six innings.
The right-hander struck out three and didn't walk anyone. Silva came into Wednesday's action having posted a 15.88 ERA on 29 hits over 11 1/3 innings this spring, so today was certainly a step in the right direction. Was it enough to keep his name in serious consideration for a spot in the rotation. Only time will tell.
