LHP Tom Gorzelanny, who was recalled from Triple-A Columbus on Wednesday, was the winning pitcher that night in his Indians' debut. The 33-year-old veteran is the only left-handed pitcher on the Indians' 13-man staff. Manager Terry Francona said "it would be really helpful" if Gorzelanny could take the job of bullpen lefty and run with it. "It would take the load off the right-handers, and the number of guys they have to get out," Francona said.

It was a highly effective outing for the veteran reliever, who now has turned in scoreless efforts in four of six appearances in September. Saturday's outing also marked the longest appearance for Gorzelanny during the 2015 season.

Gorzelanny wasn't particularly successful in his stint with Triple-A Toledo, posting a 4.00 ERA in nine innings, but he's a veteran arm that might buoy the Tigers' struggling bullpen. The lefty has had his share of trouble this season, and Tuesday was no exception. Gorzelanny now owns an unsightly 6.94 ERA in 24 innings this season. He posted a minuscule 0.86 mark in 21 innings of work last season.

Gorzelanny has allowed eight runs on six hits and five walks over his last 2.2 innings (four appearances).

His last outing (Wednesday) was particularly ugly. He fired just five pitches -- only one of them was a strike -- and surrendered one hit, two earned runs and walk without recording an out. His WHIP now sits at a lofty 1.78 and his ERA has spiked to 6.50.

Gorzelanny has been fairly effective as a lefty specialist coming out of the Tigers' bullpen this season. But he saw his stats skyrocket after giving up four earned runs, two walks and two hits, including a home run, in just 0.2 innings of work in his last appearance.

His 5.06 ERA, 1.56 WHIP and .311 BAA are all largely inflated by that outing. He'll rebound soon -- every pitcher coughs up a hairball now and again, and this Tiger is no different.

Gorzelanny picked up his first decision of the season -- a loss -- on Tuesday night against the Yankees. He entered in the seventh and pitched 1.2 innings of work, giving up one hit, two walks and one earned run alongside two strikeouts.

He will be expected to deliver in late-inning situations now that Joe Nathan is headed to surgery. The circumstances of this game -- 33 degrees F at first pitch -- made gripping the ball real tough. Going forward, Gorzelanny may provide value to those of you in leagues that count holds. This team is going to win a lot of games.

The run was the first that Gorzelanny has allowed this season. He's carrying a 3:1 K:BB over four innings, working as part of the bridge to closer Joakim Soria.

Gorzelanny was great working out of the Brewers bullpen in 2014, working to a 0.86 ERA in 23 appearances. Last season was the first as a full time reliever for the 32-year-old, but after his success there a year ago he'll likely be looked at mainly as an option out of the bullpen in Detroit. The lefty has been effective against both sides of the plate, so he could take on more than just a specialist role.

Gorzelanny tossed another scoreless inning Friday night, lowering his season ERA to 0.59.

With just one earned run allowed in 15.1 innings (August 6 against San Francisco), Gorzelanny has become a very nice piece in the Milwaukee bullpen. He's now carrying a 17:2 K:BB for the season, serving as the third left-handed option at the disposal of manager Ron Roenicke.

The veteran southpaw has missed the entire season after undergoing offseason shoulder surgery. He posted a 3.90 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 83/31 K/BB ratio over 85 1/3 innings as a swingman for the Brewers in 2013.
