Fields underwent surgery on his hip Thursday and is expected to miss roughly five months, Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports reports.
Fields remains unsigned, and this latest news makes it increasingly unlikely that he makes an impact in the NBA this season. The 27-year-old appeared in only 26 games for Toronto last season and has been on a steady decline since starting 81 games for the Knicks in 2010-11.

Fields averaged 1.8 points (48% FG, 50% 3Pt, 83% FT), 1.0 rebound, 0.6 assists, and 0.4 steals in eight minutes per game during 26 regular season games in 2014-15.
Fields didn't play a single playoff minute, and is set to enter unrestricted free agency this summer. He's seen his role reduced every year he's been in the league, and all signs point to the Raptors letting him sign elsewhere.

Fields scored four points with an assist in five minutes off the bench Friday.
He's relegated to garbage time minutes at this point when Fields sees the court at all, a situation that isn't likely to change any time soon. Leave him on your waiver wire.
Sat Jan 10 201523:48Fields did not play minute on Saturday against Celtics
Fields did not play a minute on Saturday against the Celtics.
Fields was relegated to the bench prior to Saturday's contest and he stayed there for the duration of the game. With James Johnson posting a double-double in Fields' place on Saturday, it's possible that Fields will remain in a reserve role.
Sat Jan 10 201518:54Fields will move to bench against Celtics on Saturday
Fields will move to the bench against the Celtics on Saturday.
Fields is getting replaced by James Johnson against the Celtics. The newly-demoted Fields only averaged 13 minutes on the court over his last two games as a starter, so it's entirely possible that he could retain the limited value that he possessed while still a starter.

Fields played 10 minutes on Thursday and managed just a single foul in the box score.
DeMar DeRozan is expected to return to action from his groin injury sometime next week, which will send Fields back to the end of the bench. If you'd picked him up in a deep league hoping he might parlay his starting spot into some modest production, now's the time to cut him loose.

Fields (Concussion) started, scored two points (1-3 FG), and grabbed three rebounds in 16 minutes against the Warriors Friday.
Friday marked Fields' return after a five-game absence. Even as a starter, Fields rarely approaches 25 minutes per game. With such a limited workload, and no one statistical specialty, Fields has very little fantasy value in most formats.
Fri Jan 2 201521:03Fields (concussion) cleared to play in Friday's game
Fields (concussion) has been cleared to play in Friday's game, the San Francisco Chronicle's Rusty Simmons reports.
He had been seeing between 15 and 23 minutes per game in the week leading up to the concussion, and could assume a similar role until DeMar DeRozan returns from a groin injury. Still, even if he sees about 20 minutes per game in the short term, that won't be enough time for him to be useful in any but deeper leagues.
Tue Dec 30 201420:44Fields (concussion) will not play in Tuesday's game
Fields (concussion) will not play in Tuesday's game.
He will miss his fifth straight game with a concussion, but was not a high-end fantasy option anyway. Fields should be considered day-to-day at best.
Sun Dec 28 201420:10Landry Fields: (Concussion) Will Sit Out Sunday
Fields (concussion) is officially listed as out for Sunday's game against the Nuggets, TSN Sports reports.
Fields has missed the last three games with a concussion, so this will mark the fourth straight. As long as he's still experiencing lingering symptoms, he'll continue to sit out, as concussions are an extremely serious issue. James Johnson has filled in for him ever since he first suffered the injury, so he'll continue to take his spot in the starting lineup. Consider Fields questionable for Tuesday's game against the Portland Trail Blazers.
Sat Dec 27 201413:28Fields (concussion) ruled out for Saturday's game against Clippe...
Fields (concussion) has been ruled out for Saturday's game against the Clippers, Josh Lewenberg of TSN reports.
Fields was expected to make his return after missing two games with a concussion, but he's still experiencing lingering symptoms and will not play Saturday. Coach Dwane Casey has not announced a starting lineup, but James Johnson figures to get the nod on the wing alongside Terrence Ross.

Fields (head) is anticipating a return to the lineup Saturday against the Clippers, TSN.ca reports.
Fields missed the Raptors' last two games while under the league's concussion protocol, but the team's decision earlier in the day to assign rookie winger Bruno Caboclo to the D-League suggests that Fields is expected to be available Saturday. Now in the final season of his three-year, $20 million contract with the Raptors, Fields doesn't offer much utility other than occasionally spelling Terrence Ross, James Johnson or DeMar Derozan off the bench. He's averaging just 12.3 minutes per game.
Mon Dec 22 201419:43Fields (head) isn't taking court Monday at Chicago
Fields (head) isn't taking the court Monday at Chicago, FOX Sports 1 reports.
As Fields meanders his way through the league's concussion protocol, James Johnson will man small forward in the starting lineup. In five games prior to the injury, Fields averaged 4.8 points (on 53 percent shooting), 2.4 rebounds, 1.4 assists, and 0.8 steals in 20 minutes.
Sun Dec 21 201413:58Landry Fields: (Concussion) Out Sunday
Fields (head) was unable to pass concussion protocol and will not play against the Knicks on Sunday.
Fields took a hard fall against the Pistons on Friday and is apparently still feeling the effects Sunday. His next opportunity to get on the court will be against the Bulls on Monday and James Johnson will likely see more time on the court Sunday as a result.
Fri Dec 19 201421:33Landry Fields: (Head) Will Not Return
Fields (head) left Friday's game after falling hard on his head. He received stitches to his head and will not return.
Fields had his legs taken out from under him when he leaped to block a three point attempt. He was able to walk off the court with assistance, but could have a concussion. Fields will likely receive an update at some point before the team's next game Sunday against the Knicks.

Fields left Friday's game midway through the third quarter after banging the back of his head off the court.
He leaped out to block a Pistons' three point attempt and had his legs taken out from under him, causing him to smack his head as he crashed to the floor. Fields was able to walk off the court with assistance, but a concussion is very possible given the nature of the incident. The Raptors should have a better idea of Fields' condition after the game.

Fields scored eight points (2-4 FG, 4-4 FT) with two rebounds in 21 minutes during Friday's win over the Pacers.
Having Fields in the starting lineup allows Raptors coach Dwane Casey to keep his rotations more or less intact while DeMar DeRozan (groin) is sidelined, which has helped the team play better defense over the last two games. Expect Fields to keep the gig until DeRozan returns, but don't look for much fantasy production out of him.
Wed Dec 10 201407:47Fields scored four points (2-2 FG) in surprise start against Cav...
Fields scored four points (2-2 FG) in his surprise start against the Cavaliers on Tuesday, adding on two steals, two assists and a rebound.
Greivis Vasquez was unexpectedly moved to the bench in this game, but Fields certainly didn't shock anyone with his performance. Amir Johnson, Terrence Ross and Kyle Lowry all saw a bump in their fantasy value from the move, but Vasquez owners will want to monitor what happens in the next game. Vasquez had been a good fill-in for DeMar DeRozan, but Fields could soon become the better option if he continues to start.
Tue Dec 9 201419:25Landry Fields: Making Spot Start Tuesday
Fields moved into the starting lineup Tuesday, with Greivis Vasquez shifting back to a bench role, TSN Sports reports.
Vasquez was filling in as the starter at shooting guard for the last five games with DeMar DeRozan sidelined with an adductor injury. Fields moved into the starting lineup at small forward Tuesday, with Terrence Ross shifting down to shooting guard. Lou Williams, Ross, and James Johnson are more likely to see fantasy-relevant value as a result of the move than Fields.
Sun Nov 16 201423:25Fields (illness) active but did not play Saturday
Fields (illness) was active but did not play Saturday.
Fields has missed the last three games with flu-like symptoms. He had only averaged 2.7 minutes in three appearances this season before becoming ill. Fields is an expiring contract to the Raptors. It would take a series of injuries for Fields to see meaningful minutes regularly.
