Maxwell was designated for assignment by the Giants on Tuesday, Amy Gutierrez of CSN Bay Area reports.

This is pretty surprising to see, as Maxwell has spent the entire season to this point on the active roster, but apparently the Giants have decided the 31-year-old's glove isn't enough to compensate for his bat (.209/.275/.341). Outfielders Angel Pagan and Alejandro De Aza were both added to the team's expanded September roster.

Maxwell went 1-for-4 with his seventh home run of the season in Sunday's victory over the Diamondbacks.

Maxwell is hitting for a .216/.268/.373 slash line this season, but came up with a big home run in the Giants' 2-1 victory. After a terrible month of June, where Maxwell hit just .150, he's hit .259 in July and has shown signs of life at the plate.

Maxwell entered Saturday's game after Nori Aoki left with a leg injury. He went 1-for-4 with a two-run shot in the win over the Dodgers.

The long ball was Maxwell's sixth of the season. He could see a few extra starts if Aoki is forced to miss any action, making him an intriguing option in daily fantasy leagues, but probably best left on waivers in standard leagues.

Maxwell is not in the lineup for Saturday's game against the Diamondbacks.

Jarrett Parker will take over in right field as Maxwell sits after starting four straight games in place of Hunter Pence (wrist). With Pence landing on the DL on Friday and Gregor Blanco out with a concussion, the door is open for Maxwell to continue seeing regular starts. He's just 4-for-23 so far this month but two of those hits have left the yard.

Maxwell went 2-for-4 with a two-run shot in Friday's win over the Phillies.

Maxwell had been relegated to a bench role when Hunter Pence returned from the disabled list, but he could see a couple of starts this weekend with Pence experiencing tendinitis in his left wrist. He is out of the lineup Saturday, but could see a start Sunday if Pence is forced to miss that game.

Maxwell is in the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Dodgers, Dylan Hernandez of the LA Times reports.

Maxwell saw regular playing time to start the season, but with Hunter Pence back in action for the Giants, Maxwell has returned to part-time duty. After sitting out each of the past two games, he'll play left field and bat fifth Wednesday.

Maxwell has started every game but one in right field since Apr. 21, but his days of regular playing time have come to a close with Hunter Pence back on the major league roster. Maxwell, who has three home runs and 16 RBI in 33 games this season, figures to start primarily against left-handed pitchers moving forward.

Maxwell is off to a good start in this series going 4-for-10 with two runs scored and three RBI. Maxwell has broken out for the Giants, but it's just a matter of time before Hunter Pence joins the team from his rehab assignment and steals playing time away from Maxwell, so enjoy it while it lasts.

Maxwell went 2-for-3 and snatched two RBI in the 6-0 win over Miami Friday.

Maxwell is having a breakout season with the Giants and he's a sneaky option if he can continue to get playing time. It remains to be seen what Bochy will do when Hunter Pence returns from injury, but it'll be tough for him to pull Maxwell out of his lineup.

He has always had decent power and speed, but his lack of a strong hit tool has prevented Maxwell for sticking with one organization for very long. However, Maxwell will find playing time difficult to come by once Hunter Pence returns sometime in May.

This move was effectively made Sunday when both Juan Perez and Gary Brown were sent to the minors, but Maxwell formally took his place on the active roster after batting .316/.361/.526 with two homers and 11 RBI in his first 21 spring games. Look for Maxwell to serve on the short end of a platoon in right field with Gregor Blanco and see opportunities off the bench until Hunter Pence returns from his forearm injury.

With Juan Perez and Gary Brown being sent down Sunday, Maxwell appears to have won the battle for the fourth outfield spot on the Opening Day roster.

Joining the Giants as a non-roster invitee this spring, Maxwell has slashed .302/.351/.509 with two homers, 10 RBI, and two stolen bases in 53 at-bats. He doesn't exhibit great plate discipline (13:4 K:BB ratio). but the club likes his power and speed combination from the right side of the plate. He will likely platoon with Gregor Blanco in right field and provide pop off the bench until Hunter Pence (forearm) returns.
