1B/OF Michael Morse (concussion) was transferred from to the 60-day disabled list to create a spot on the 40-man roster for INF Engelb Vielma, who was claimed off waivers from the Minnesota Twins on Thursday. Morse has not returned to the Giants since suffering the injury attempting to break up the fight between Giants RHP Hunter Strickland and Washington Nationals RF Bryce Harper in May.

1B Michael Morse, on the disabled list since May 30 due to a concussion, was transferred from the 10-day disabled list to the 60-day DL on Thursday. Morse, who is hitting .194 in 24 games, is unlikely to return to action this season.

Morse said he couldn't help but think back to 2014 when he hit a game-tying, pinch-hit homer in the eighth inning of the Giants' 6-3 victory against St. Louis in Game 5 when they clinched the NL Championship Series. He is back with the Giants after two seasons away. "That was pretty awesome," Morse said of his latest heroics.

It's been a rough year for Morse as he's moved from team-to-team, but this was nice to see. He simply came in to relieve Pedro Alvarez for an undisclosed reason and responded well by recording two multi-base hits for the first time in a Pittsburgh uniform. Morse's role has been delegated to facing only southpaws and pinch-hitting and his fantasy relevancy is minimal at this point in his career.

Morse will start at first base and bat seventh Wednesday against the Diamondbacks.

The Pirates are loading up against lefty Robbie Ray, giving Morse a rare opportunity to see multiple at-bats. Morse has four singles and two walks in 14 official at-bats for Pittsburgh and could be a sneaky start in daily leagues Wednesday.

Morse will make his Pirates debut Monday against the Cubs, manning first base and batting seventh in the order.

Following his trade from the Marlins on Friday, general manager Neal Huntington stated that Morse's presence would strengthen the Pirates' depth. Specifically, Morse is expected to log time at first, as he will Monday. With lefty Jon Lester on the mound for the Cubs, though, Morse must sidestep his horrid .091/.200/.091 line versus southpaws this season.

Morse is expected to deepen Pittsburgh's bench and see occasional playing time at first base, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports.

Morse, who isn't expected to join the team until Monday, hit 16 homers with 61 RBI and an .811 OPS with San Francisco in 2014 but has disappointed with Miami (.213/.276/.313). "Morse is a right-handed bat off the bench who can spell Pedro at first base," GM Neal Huntington said. "We'll see how it plays out. If we can get him back to where he was a year ago, it could play out very well. If he continues to scuffle, we'll have a decision to make as we move forward."

Morse was traded to the Pirates on Friday along with cash considerations in exchange for Jose Tabata.
