Maldonado elected free agency last month after refusing a minor league assignment, but he's now back with the organization. The 33-year-old appeared in four games with the Nationals this season and is likely to begin the 2013 season at the Triple-A level.

Nationals purchased the contract of C Carlos Maldonado from Triple-A Syracuse.
He'll replace the injured Sandy Leon (ankle) on the active roster. Maldonado, 33, was hitting .211/.273/.380 in 21 games with the Chiefs this year and has a .185/.274/.370 batting line in 62 career plate appearances at the big league level. He can be ignored in fantasy leagues.

Maldonado has been on the disabled list since June 5 because of a broken right thumb. He was 3-for-11 during brief his time with the major league club. He is batting .215/.286/.290 with one home run and nine RBI in 93 at-bats with the Chiefs this season.

With Ivan Rodriguez on the disabled list, Maldonado will function as Wil Nieves' backup over the next couple of weeks. Maldonado, 31, was batting .218/.293/.299 in 87 at-bats with Triple-A Syracuse this season. He has a .163/.260/.326 batting line over 43 major league at-bats -- all with Pirates -- most recently in 2007.

Dave Sheinin of the Washington Post reports that Carlos Maldonado is not listed on the lineup card for Monday's game for Triple-A Syracuse.
This means that he'll be the replacement for Ivan Rodriguez, who was placed on the 15-day disabled list on Monday. Maldonado, 31, has a .163/.260/.326 batting line over 43 major league at-bats, all with the Pirates. He hasn't appeared in the majors since the 2007 season. He is batting .218/.293/.299 in 87 at-bats with Triple-A Syracuse this season.
