Mattheus was awarded the win Monday night despite allowing a run-scoring single to the only batter he faced. He gave up a hit by Kris Bryant, scoring Kyle Schwarber, but Anthony Rizzo was thrown out at third base on the play.
Meanwhile, Shelby Miller has gone 19 starts without a win. Life isn't always fair.

Mattheus got the loss Friday night against the Rockies, allowing the winning run to score on a wild pitch.
This came after Joey Votto tied the game in the ninth with a homer off Rockies' closer John Axford. Mattheus has actually been better than most of the Reds' relievers this season, but that's damning with faint praise. Still, his role could be enhanced if the Reds trade Aroldis Chapman before the trade deadline.

For the second day in a row, Mattheus helped turn a small deficit into a large one, giving up two runs Saturday on three hits and two walks. He also committed a balk.
Mattheus was part of a sequence where the Brewers reached based on six consecutive batters. In the last two days, his ERA has climbed from 2.75 to 4.29 and his WHIP from 1.120 to 1.480.

Mattheus was claimed off waivers by the Reds and will join the team Thursday.
Presumably, he'll work in middle relief for the Reds and take over the roster spot formerly held by Kevin Gregg.
Tue May 12 201517:17Mattheus designated for assignment by Angels on Tuesday
Mattheus was designated for assignment by the Angels on Tuesday.
Mattheus, who was brought up last Friday to provide some short-term bullpen help, was bumped from the 40-man roster in favor of Marc Krauss. If Mattheus passes through waivers unclaimed, he will likely head to Triple-A Salt Lake to serve as organizational depth.
Tue May 12 201516:59Mattheus optioned to Triple-A Salt Lake on Tuesday
Mattheus was optioned to Triple-A Salt Lake on Tuesday.
The 31-year-old Mattheus made one appearance in his brief stint with the Angels, striking out two batters in a scoreless inning. Even if he makes it back to the majors, he probably won't see much work in high-leverage situations this season.
Fri May 8 201519:40Mattheus recalled from Triple-A Salt Lake on Friday
Mattheus was recalled from Triple-A Salt Lake on Friday.
Mattheus has already made seven appearances on the mound for the Angels this season so this promotion is not all that surprising. The 31-year-old is sporting an ERA of 1.04 over 8.2 innings out of the bullpen this year.

Mattheus was reassigned to the Angels' minor league camp on Saturday night.
He was a longshot to make the big club, and fell short even with the team taking 12 pitchers to begin the season.
Wed Jan 14 201519:19Mattheus has signed minor league deal with Angels
Mattheus has signed a minor league deal with the Angels, Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register reports.
Mattheus is still paying for his brutally bad 2013, which featured a 6.37 ERA and cancelled out his strong 2012 (2.85 ERA). He'll get a chance to make his case in spring training, but it's hard to see him not starting 2015 in Triple-A, where he spent most of 2014 until the Nationals outrighted him.

The Nationals outrighted Mattheus off their 40-man roster Thursday, James Wagner of the Washington Post reports.
Mattheus, with 145 big league games under his belt, elected to become a free agent rather than accept his Triple-A assignment. He appeared in just seven big league games last season, but his experience should help him land a job elsewhere.
Sat Sep 6 201412:52Mattheus recalled from Triple-A Syracuse on Saturday
Mattheus was recalled from Triple-A Syracuse on Saturday.
Aside from a handful appearances with the major league club early in the season and two with the team's rookie-level affiliate, Mattheus spent the year at Syracuse, posting a 5.80 ERA and 1.46 WHIP over 40.1 innings. He enjoyed a good deal of success with the Nationals in 2011-12 but figures to be relegated to mop-up duty upon his return.

Mattheus was slowed this spring due to inflammation of a tendon in his chest. Once healthy, he shouldn't need many appearances in the minors before being an option for the Nats' bullpen.

Thu Mar 20 201416:23Mattheus (chest) to start year on DL
Nationals manager Matt Williams confirmed Thursday that Ryan Mattheus (chest) will not be ready for the start of the season.
Mattheus, sidelined for most of the spring due to inflammation of a tendon in his chest, made his spring debut on Thursday and there simply isn't enough time left on the calendar for him to be ready for Opening Day. However, he should join Washington's bullpen by mid-April if all goes well.

Wed Mar 19 201419:22Mattheus (chest) to see first action Thursday
Ryan Mattheus (chest) will make his first appearance of the spring on Thursday.
Mattheus has missed all the action thus far due to, in short, chest inflammation. The right-hander threw to hitters on Monday, and he'll get his first taste of game action Thursday afternoon. Mattheus may still have enough time to earn a bullpen job, but Nationals manager Matt Williams has also been impressed with right-hander Aaron Barrett. Barrett may be a candidate for Mattheus' spot should the 30-year-old not be ready for Opening Day.

Mon Mar 17 201417:31Mattheus (chest) throws to hitters
Ryan Mattheus (chest) threw to hitters Monday for the first time this spring.
Mattheus fell behind this spring after being diagnosed with costochondritis, which is inflammation of a tendon in his chest, but he said he felt "really good" while using all of his pitches Monday. Relievers typically don't need much work to get ready for the season, but he's going to be cutting it pretty close.
