Marquis was released by the Reds on Thursday.

Marquis' designation for assignment effectively ended his run with the club, as it's unlikely he would have accepted an assignment to the minors. He has now become a free agent, and will be free to sign with any club looking for another arm.

The Cincinnati Reds released pitcher Jason Marquis on Thursday. Marquis pitched well enough in spring training to earn a rotation spot, but was sent to the bullpen after posting a 6.46 ERA in nine games. Manager Brian Pryce said Marquis' release coincides with an effort to make the team younger. "We are kind of going with our youth movement and see if they're ready here," Price said. "We've seen that with DeSclafani, then Lorenzen, then Iglesias and now Moscot. It's the way we've decided to go to give these guys the opportunity to come and be the rotation. You're looking at our future. I don't think we anticipated Iglesias, Lorenzen and Moscot all being in our rotation at the same time to go with DeSclafani. ... I never would have anticipated that in early June we'd have all these guys on our roster and throwing so well. It's exciting."

Marquis was designated for assignment by the Reds on Friday.

Marquis was mercifully removed from the Reds' rotation a couple weeks ago, starting only nine games in his brief tenure. He did not make any relief appearances after being moved to the bullpen. His days in the organization appear to be over, though it's possible he could accept an assignment to serve as depth in Triple-A.

Marquis (general soreness) has been moved to the bullpen, John Fay of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports.

Even though it's less than two months into the season, this has been a long time coming for Marquis. The 36-year-old has been knocked around to the tune of a 6.46 ERA and 1.65 WHIP in 47.1 innings this year, with an opponents' batting average of .330. A recent health issue gave the Reds the excuse they needed to make the switch, and now that it's official, Mike Lorenzen and Raisel Iglesias are effectively cemented into the rotation.

Marquis's health is part of the reason why the Reds are listing Sunday's starter as "TBA". "We'll make a decision on Sunday as we move forward," Price said. "We're waiting on Cueto, and Jason [Marquis] is a little banged up. It's nothing he can't pitch with, but he's banged up as well."

The Reds are getting closer to bouncing Marquis from the rotation entirely, but to do that, they need to have Johnny Cueto fully operational first.

Marquis surrenders two earned runs on 10 hits in Monday's loss to the Rockies.

Marquis scattered 10 hits across 5.2 innings on Monday to earn the no decision in what would end up being yet another loss for the Reds. He took three losses in his previous three starts, and this one wasn't much better. His 6.46 ERA isn't going to cut it, and it will be interesting to see if Marquis gets another chance next week.

Marquis will start for the Reds on Monday against the Rockies, MLB.com's Mark Sheldon confirms.

Marquis has now taken three straight losses, giving up 15 earned runs on 21 hits over that span. To make matters worse, he hasn't given the Cincinnati bullpen much relief, failing to make it out of the fourth inning in back-to-back outings. Despite the struggles, the 36-year-old right-hander will get at least one more turn in the rotation, but another poor outing could force manage Bryan Price into a decision.

Marquis was pulled after 3.2 innings, yielding four runs on four hits and striking out one in Wednesday's loss to the Royals.

In losing his past three starts, Marquis has surrendered 21 hits and 15 runs in 12.1 innings for a 15.33 ERA. It is unclear whether Marquis will remain in the rotation.

Marquis was rocked for six runs on seven hits, walking two and striking out four while lasting just three innings in the Reds 10-2 loss to San Francisco on Friday night.

Marquis (3-3, 6.63 ERA) tossed 41 of 64 pitches for strikes, but he wasn't fooling anyone, allowing a three-run homer in the first and a two-run shot in the third inning. He has collected three wins, but has just one start that would be considered quality so the Reds will likely be looking for alternatives if he doesn't show considerable improvement soon.

Marquis will start the second game of Saturday's doubleheader against the White Sox.

Friday's game, which was postponed due to rain, has been rescheduled as part of a doubleheader. Marquis will face Carlos Rodon in Rodon's first career major league start.

Marquis was strong in a win Monday, going eight innings while allowing only two runs against the Brewers.

Marquis's dominant start was a nice change after the veteran had allowed 13 total runs in his first three starts of the season. Marquis' season continues on this weekend as the Reds travel to Atlanta to play the Braves.

Marquis earned the win Tuesday against the Brewers despite allowing five earned runs in five innings.

Marquis has yet to make it through more than six innings in any of his first three starts. His terrible outing on Tuesday brings his ERA up to 7.2. The 36-year-old has given up one home run in each of his starts this season but has struck out a combined 21 batters.

Marquis (0-1) allowed five runs (four earned) on seven hits and three walks Wednesday against the Cubs.

His line saving grace was his six strikeouts -- Marquis has fanned 13 in 10 innings to start the year, but he's also allowed 19 baserunners and a pair of homers. He'll see the Brewers on the road next week, and isn't an advisable fantasy start if you can avoid it.

Marquis had his contract selected by the Reds on Sunday.

Marquis was named a member of the Reds' rotation early in spring training, so the move comes as no surprise. However, Homer Bailey (forearm) will rejoin the team part way through the season, at which point the club will need to decide whether to keep Marquis or Raisel Iglesias in the rotation.

Even though it's been presumed that Marquis will win a spot in the Reds rotation, he and the other non-roster invitees on the Reds haven't yet been notified that they've made the team.

Marquis still is likely to win a spot, but the Reds and manager Bryan Price are being a little coy (though others might phrase that as being flexible) about their intentions to begin the season.

Paul Maholm has been told that he is now competing for a spot in the Reds' bullpen, with Raisel Iglesias also getting a spot in the Reds' rotation to start the season. Once Homer Bailey (forearm) comes off the DL, either Marquis or Iglesias will relinquish their spot, and for fantasy purposes, Iglesias is the one with the stuff and the upside to warrant a late-round flier.

Reds manager Bryan Price hinted that Marquis and Paul Maholm will likely open the season in the starting rotation, mlb.com reports. "The thing is, when we have veteran guys like Marquis and Maholm, you're not going to use them for one start," Price said. "If they're going to be on our team, the hope is that they're on our team for an entire season, if not longer. And that's how we have to look at that. You can back-and-forth a young guy. You can start a game or two and then go down to the Minor Leagues or go to the bullpen and help us as a long guy. So Marquis and Maholm are looking more like long-term, start-to-finish options for us."

With Tony Cingrani moved to the bullpen, the Reds have Marquis, Paul Maholm, Raisel Iglesias and Anthony DeSclafani competing for three rotation spots. Of course, one of the guys who makes the cut probably won't last long, as Homer Bailey (knee) hopes to be ready by mid-April.
