Mon Nov 4 201320:09Mariano Rivera wins Comeback POY in AL
Mariano Rivera has been announced as the 2013 Comeback Player of the Year in the American League.
He's obviously a deserving winner. After being limited to nine appearances in 2012 due to a knee injury, Rivera posted a 2.11 ERA while converting 44 of 51 save chances for the Yankees. The all-time saves leader, of course, has retired from baseball.

Sat Sep 28 201318:23Rivera 'done,' won't play again this season
Mariano Rivera said he's "done" and doesn't plan to play at all this weekend against the Astros.
"I'm done," Rivera told reporters before Saturday's game. It means Thursday's appearance at Yankee Stadium was the last of his season and of his career. It's a fitting end for Mo, leaving the image of him walking off to a standing ovation in front of his home crowd as the lasting memory of his final game.

Sat Sep 28 201308:09Mariano Rivera could appear in center field
Yankees manager Joe Girardi indicated Friday that legendary closer Mariano Rivera could appear in center field during one of the final games against the Astros.
Girardi also noted that Rivera would be allowed to dictate how he is used over the weekend. We saw on Friday, that with a save opportunity the Yankees went to David Robertson instead of Mo, perhaps a sign that Rivera's emotional exit from Thursday's game could be the final time we see him take the mound. His entire career, Rivera has shagged fly balls during batting practice, displaying excellent skills and range, and it would be a nice touch to get him a chance out there during the final game of the season.

Thu Sep 26 201322:26Mariano Rivera bows out of Yankee Stadium
Mariano Rivera retired all four batters he faced Thursday in his final appearance at Yankee Stadium.
Rivera came in with one out in the eighth and the Yankees down 4-0 and left with two outs in the ninth, as Derek Jeter and Andy Pettitte made the change in an emotional scene. It wasn't the save situation Rivera likely would have preferred, but the way things unfolded was pretty touching. After the game, Rivera went out and collected some mound dirt before walking off the field a final time.

Thu Sep 26 201316:02Rivera could play in center field vs. Astros
Yankees manager Joe Girardi said he is "absolutely" considering letting Mariano Rivera in center field this weekend against the Astros.
Girardi isn't going to do it Thursday against the Rays because the game has playoff implications. Ideally, Rivera will play center field in the eighth inning of a game before staying in to get a save chance in the ninth inning, but that's not necessarily how it will go down. Still, it will be fascinating to watch.

Fri Sep 13 201317:59Rivera, Robertson unavailable Friday vs. BOS
Yankees manager Joe Girardi said that Mariano Rivera and David Robertson are unavailable Friday against the Red Sox.
Rivera has pitched four out of the last five days while Robertson has thrown 43 pitches over the past two days, so they'll both get a rest. Girardi will have to play the matchups in the late innings.

Fri Sep 13 201300:24Mariano Rivera credited with sixth win
Mariano Rivera was credited with the victory Thursday after pitching a scoreless ninth as the Yankees beat the Orioles 6-5.
Rivera thought he was coming in for the save in the game, but the official scorer threw a changeup, giving him the win instead. That's because David Robertson, who would have been in line for the victory, gave up three runs in the eighth, rendering him ineffective. It was the correct call to deny Robertson the win, but it was still surprising to see a save taken off the board for Rivera. He'd probably prefer the save to the win.

Sun Sep 8 201316:37Rivera blows 7th save; earns 5th victory
Mariano Rivera blew his seventh save Sunday against the Red Sox, but he ended up earning his fifth win.
He's blown two straight saves, but had strung together eight straight scoreless appearances before that. Joe Girardi called on Rivera in the eighth inning with a 3-2 lead. Mo completed that frame without incident, but surrendered a leadoff homer to Will Middlebrooks in the ninth. Over two innings, the legend struck out three. Rivera is 41-for-48 in save conversions and boasts a 2.28 ERA and 1.12 WHIP.

Fri Sep 6 201300:15Mariano Rivera blows sixth save
Mariano Rivera blew his sixth save after giving up a run in the ninth Thursday against the Red Sox.
Rivera got the first two batters in the ninth, but he gave up a single to Mike Napoli to extend the inning. Quintin Berry entered a pinch-runner and immediately attempted a steal, ending up on third when Austin Romine's throw skipped into center field. Stephen Drew then tied it with another single. The run was declared earned in the official scorer's judgment; it was the right assumption that Berry would have scored from second on Drew's hit. Rivera's six blown saves are his most since 2003. Of course, he's still 41-for-47, with a 2.19 ERA.

Wed Sep 4 201309:20No mo' Mo: Rivera still plans to retire
Mariano Rivera reiterated that he won't change his mind about retiring after this season.
Joe Girardi started the conversation anew on Tuesday, as ESPN quoted him as saying the skipper would, "make sure (retiring) is really what (Rivera wants) to do." Rivera squashed the discussion before it burst aflame. "I already told you guys. I don't want to come back like that again," Rivera said. "I made my decision. They can do whatever they want. That's fine. I don't tell (Girardi) what to do. But on my behalf, I already made my decision in spring training."

Sun Aug 11 201317:25Rivera allows 2 HRs, escapes with victory
Mariano Rivera allowed two homers over one inning Sunday against the Tigers, but escaped with the win.
Rivera replaced David Robertson in the top of the ninth protecting a 4-2 Yankee lead. Homers by Miguel Cabrera and Victor Martinez tied the affair, but Brett Gardner's walk-off in the bottom half of the frame gifted the ancient New York closer with his third win of the season (and 78th overall, for those keeping track at home). Rivera has surrendered a troubling five runs on three homers over his last three appearances, which has spiked his ERA from 1.56 to 2.44.

Fri Aug 9 201323:57Mariano Rivera blows second straight save
Mariano Rivera blew his second consecutive save chance on Friday, surrendering a two-out, game-tying homer to Miguel Cabrera.
Even with these blips on the radar, Rivera still owns a terrific 2.08 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 41/8 K/BB ratio through 43 1/3 innings on the season. He has still converted 35 of his 39 save chances on the season, and remains one of the truly elite closers in the league.

Thu Aug 8 201300:56Rivera blows third save against White Sox
Mariano Rivera blew his third save of the season against the White Sox on Wednesday.
Rivera got two quick outs before giving up a double to Gordon Beckham and an RBI single to Adam Dunn that tied the game. It was just his third blown save in 38 chances, so his success rate is still pretty high. Blown saves happen.

Thu Aug 1 201301:29Rivera earns his 30th save of the season
Mariano Rivera tossed a perfect ninth inning Wednesday against the Dodgers for his 34th save of the season.
He struck out two and dispatched the Dodgers in 12 pitches. It was Rivera's second career save at Dodgers Stadium (he's earned saves in 31 parks). Rivera hasn't allowed a run since July 7. The All-Star game MVP currently boasts a 1.60 ERA. The Yankees probably wish they could sign him to a long-term extension.

Tue Jul 16 201323:49Mo named MVP as AL downs NL in All-Star game
Mariano Rivera earned All-Star game MVP honors with a perfect inning in the American League's 3-0 victory over the National League Tuesday.
Mo came on in the eighth inning instead of the ninth, as AL manager Jim Leyland wanted to make sure the all-time saves leader made an appearance. It was a fantastic moment, as the players waited to take the field until Mo began throwing his warm-up tosses. No. 42 then retired the NL in order. He became the first reliever ever to take home the All-Star game MVP award.

Sat Jul 13 201300:12Rivera pitches perfect ninth for 30th save
Mariano Rivera tossed a perfect ninth inning Friday against the Twins for his 30th save of the season.
His first appearance since Sunday's blown save against the Orioles, Rivera needed just nine pitches to close it out. He struck out one batter in the scoreless frame. The 43-year-old hasn't missed a beat since returning from knee surgery, posting a 1.83 ERA in 38 appearances while going 30-for-32 in save chances. He defies reason and logic.

Sun Jul 7 201316:23Mariano Rivera blows second save
Mariano Rivera suffered a rare blown save Sunday, allowing a go-ahead, two-run homer to the Orioles' Adam Jones.
Mo lost a one-out battle with Nick Markakis, who singled, before Jones hit one over the boards in left-center. It was the future Hall of Famer's first blown save since May 28 and just his second in 31 tries this season. Mo's WHIP has been uncharacteristically high this season at 1.29, as he's giving up over a hit per inning. Still, he boasts a 1.89 ERA and will remain an elite fantasy closer this season.
