According to Anthony McCarron of the New York Daily News, the Yankees will decline Damaso Marte's $4 million club option for 2012.
It was pretty much a given, anyway. Marte, now 36 years old, didn't throw a pitch in the major leagues last season following shoulder surgery.

Damaso Marte suffered a setback in his rehab from shoulder surgery.
Marte was knocked around for six runs over two-thirds of an inning in his first minor league rehab appearance with the GCL Yankees last Thursday. The southpaw was already a longshot to help the Yankees this season, but this pretty much seals it.

Thu Aug 25 201114:12Marte (shoulder) begins rehab appearance
Damaso Marte (shoulder) was blasted for six runs over two-thirds of an inning Thursday in his first minor league rehab appearance with the Gulf Coast League Yankees.
Needless to say, he didn't fare nearly as well as fellow left-hander Pedro Feliciano. Marte threw just 22 pitches on the afternoon, but managed to give up six hits and throw a wild pitch. The southpaw underwent surgery last October to repair a torn labrum in his throwing shoulder and doesn't appear to be anywhere near major-league ready.

Sat Jun 11 201108:41Damaso Marte still hopes to pitch this season
Damaso Marte (shoulder) has begun playing catch and still hopes to pitch again this season.
Yankees manager Joe Girardi said just after the season started that Marte would likely be sidelined all year after undergoing shoulder surgery back in October of 2010. But, Marte has plans to return sometime after the All-Star break. It remains to be seen if he can be effective less than a year after surgery, but with the Yankees getting little help from the left side of their bullpen, they're surely welcome Marte back if he's ready.

Mon Oct 25 201008:49Yanks may cut ties with Marte this offseason
Chad Jennings of The Journal News suspects that the Yankees may part ways with Damaso Marte this winter.
Marte has appeared in only 51 games over the last two seasons because of injuries and underwent surgery last week for a torn labrum. He won't be available to pitch until after the All-Star next year and he has a 2012 option that almost certainly isn't going to be exercised. The Yanks may as well cut ties with the lefty reliever this offseason and let him find a gig elsewhere.

Sun Oct 24 201011:48RP Damaso Marte undergoes labrum surgery
Damaso Marte had labrum surgery Friday and won't pitch again until after the All-Star break.
Marte was concerned that the injury would end his career, but it appears as though that won't be the case. "It's hard when you feel something inside and sometimes they don't find out what's the problem," Marte said. "Right now, we know what we have and the labrum is very cut. But now they fix it, and I feel happy because I know I can pitch maybe next year."

Damaso Marte is likely to need surgery to repair his injured shoulder.
A decision will be made in about two weeks. Marte has dealt with shoulder problems for a good chunk of each of the last two seasons, so this comes as no surprise. He would likely be knocked out for 2011 if he goes under the knife, though it will depend on the type of surgery and the extent of the damage.
