Sat Jan 11 201416:17Bay 'essentially retiring' after 11 seasons
Jason Bay says he hasn't filed any official paperwork yet but that he doesn't see a scenario in which he plays next season, according to Shi Davidi of Sportsnet.ca.
Bay had been considering an off from a Japanese team, previously speculated to be the Yomiuri Giants, but has decided to focus on his family instead. If Bay has played his final game, the outfielder will finish with a .266/.360/.481 career line and 222 home runs in parts of 11 seasons. The 35-year-old spent 2013 with the Mariners before being released in August.

Tue Dec 10 201310:35Jason Bay could sign with Japanese team
Greg Johns of MLB.com hears that Jason Bay could sign with the Yomiuri Giants of Japan's Central League.
Bay was released by the Mariners in August after he batted just .204/.298/.393 over 236 plate appearances. The 35-year-old is unlikely to find a guaranteed deal in the states at this point in his career, but he is apparently getting some interest overseas.

Tue Nov 12 201308:35Jason Bay unsure whether he'll play in 2014
Jason Bay is unsure whether he'll play in 2014.
Bay was released by the Mariners in August after he batted just .204/.298/.393 over 236 plate appearances. The 35-year-old would likely have to settle for a spring training invite, so it might not be worth his while.

Tue Aug 6 201314:32Mariners release outfielder Jason Bay
Mariners released OF Jason Bay.
Bay passed through waivers after being designated for assignment by the Mariners last week. The 34-year-old outfielder batted .204/.298/.393 in 236 plate appearances with Seattle. He'll attempt to latch on elsewhere.

Mon Jul 29 201313:58Mariners designate Jason Bay for assignment
Mariners designated OF Jason Bay for assignment.
Bay entered play Monday sporting a .204/.298/.393 batting line in 236 plate appearances with Seattle. He has displayed some power this year, but the Mariners grew tired of the inconsistency. Bay, 34, signed a one-year, $1 million contract with the M's in early December.

Sat Jun 29 201302:06Jason Bay homers, walks three times
Jason Bay homered and walked three times against the Cubs on Friday.
Bay is batting just .220, but he has nine homers and 25 walks in 173 at-bats, making him a fairly productive outfielder for the Mariners. The only reason he hasn't played much of late is that he's dealing with a hamstring injury.

Thu Jun 20 201319:27Jason Bay says hamstring improving
Jason Bay said Thursday that his tight hamstring feels "10 times better" and he expects to return in a day or two.
Bay hadn't played since his hammy tightened up on in during Sunday's game. The Mariners don't face a lefty until next Tuesday, so they can afford to use Bay only off the bench for a few more days if they want.

Mon Jun 17 201322:20Jason Bay dealing with sore hamstring
Jason Bay is nursing a sore hamstring.
Bay normally would have started Monday against Angels lefty Jason Vargas, but he felt his hamstring tighten up during Sunday's game. "He got a little knot in there," Mariners manager Eric Wedge said. "We got him out here early and tried to have him run a little bit, but we talked about it and felt we'd be putting him in harm's way." Bay is considered day-to-day.

Sat Jun 1 201316:45Jason Bay homers twice in loss to Twins
Jason Bay hit a pair of solo homers in Saturday's loss to the Twins.
Well, how about that. Bay now has eight home runs through 117 at-bats this season. It's worth noting that David Wright is the only Mets' player with a higher OPS than Bay (.822) this season. The 34-year-old outfielder might not be relevant in mixed fantasy leagues again, but the change of scenery has worked out pretty well for him so far.

Sun May 26 201321:40Jason Bay hits walkoff single in 13th inning
Jason Bay went 2-for-3 and hit a walkoff single in the 13th inning of Sunday's win against the Rangers.
Bay didn't start, but remained in the game after pinch-running for Michael Morse in the ninth inning. With Michael Saunders struggling, the Mariners have been using Bay in their leadoff spot against left-handed pitching. Bay is batting .245/.353/.408 through his first 36 games this season.

Fri Apr 26 201318:07Bay batting leadoff Friday vs. Angels
Jason Bay will bat leadoff for the first time in his career Friday night against the Angels.
The Angels toyed with the idea during spring training, but Bay will get his first test in a regular season game Friday night with the southpaw C.J. Wilson on the hill. The 34-year-old is clearly done as a middle-of-the-order hitter, but the Mariners hope that his patience will provide some value at the top of the lineup. It could be wishful thinking. Endy Chavez, who went 3-for-4 out of the leadoff spot Thursday, has been dropped down to eighth.

Fri Apr 26 201301:02Bay has two hits in win over Angels
Jason Bay went 2-for-3 with a two-run single and a run scored Thursday against the Angels.
Bay capitalized after Garrett Richards intentionally walked Carlos Peguero to load the bases with one out in the seventh inning. It was hard to disagree with the strategy by Angels manager Mike Scioscia, but the outfielder doubled his RBI total for the season with one swing of the bat. Meanwhile, it was his first multi-hit game since April 13. It was a rare productive evening for Bay, but we still think the Mariners would have been better off keeping Casper Wells.

Wed Apr 10 201302:00Jason Bay hits first homer
Jason Bay homered, singled and walked off the bench Tuesday against the Astros.
Bay wasn't in the starting lineup, even though the Mariners were facing a left-hander, but he got three at-bats in the Astros' rout and made the most of them, hitting his first homer of the year off a Triple-A pitcher in Paul Clemens. Whether that's a good sign or not, he still figures to find himself back on the bench on Wednesday.

Thu Mar 28 201321:42Bay expected to get final spot over Wells
The Mariners are expected to carry Jason Bay as their final outfielder over Casper Wells.
General manager Jack Zduriencik insisted Thursday that no final decision had been made, but the club tipped its hand when it left Wells behind to play in minor league games while it brought Bay to Mesa to play against the Cubs. Bay singled in one of his two at-bats Thursday and is hitting .327 with two homers this spring. Wells is out of options, so he will either be traded or will have to pass through waivers in order to report to Triple-A.

Thu Mar 21 201317:48Bay to play center field for M's on Thursday
Jason Bay will start in center field for the Mariners on Thursday night.
The Mariners are just testing Bay's versatility in case they carry him on the Opening Day roster over Casper Wells. The 34-year-old has played 40 games in center field during his career, though none since 2005 as a member of the Pirates.

Wed Mar 13 201314:41Mariners considering Bay as leadoff man
The Mariners are looking at Jason Bay as a possible leadoff option.
You read that right, the same Jason Bay who batted just .165/.237/.299 in 215 plate appearances last season. The 34-year-old has never hit leadoff in his career, but Mariners manager Eric Wedge is pleased with the quality of his at-bats this spring. Bay is hitting .333/.440/.714 with two homers and four RBI in 25 plate appearances so far this spring and will bat leadoff for the second straight day Wednesday. It probably doesn't hurt to give him as many at-bats as possible as they attempt to determine whether he has truly turned things around.

Fri Mar 1 201318:40Bay hits two-run homer in win over Rangers
Jason Bay went 2-for-2 with a two-run homer and a walk in Friday's 8-6 win over the Rangers.
It was Bay's second home run of the spring, an encouraging start as the 34-year-old attempts to win a spot on the M's Opening Day roster. Michael Morse, Michael Saunders and Carlos Peguero also went deep in Friday's victory. For what it's worth, the Mariners lead all MLB teams with 18 homers this spring.

Sat Dec 29 201216:36Bay not guaranteed to make Mariners roster
According to Greg Johns of MLB.com, Jason Bay is far from a guarantee to make the Mariners roster out of spring training.
Only half of Bay's $1 million salary is guaranteed, so there is little financial risk if they were to cut him loose. Johns speculates that the Opening Day outfield could be Michael Saunders, Franklin Gutierrez and a platoon of Casper Wells and Raul Ibanez. That would leave Bay to fight for a reserve outfielder role with the likes of Eric Thames and Carlos Peguero. The M's value Bay's veteran presence and leadership, but he'll need to have a very strong spring in order to break camp with the team.

Sat Dec 8 201217:31Mariners officially sign OF Bay
Mariners signed OF Jason Bay to a one-year, $1 million contract.
The full amount of the contact isn't guaranteed, as they'll only be on the hook for $500k if Bay doesn't make the team out of spring training.

Fri Dec 7 201219:52Mariners to announce Bay deal on Saturday
While the Mariners have yet to officially announce the free agent signing of Jason Bay, the deal is still done, they're merely waiting due to paperwork delays involving the 40-man roster.
As reported on Thursday, the full $1 million of Bay's base salary is not guaranteed. After a horrifying three-year stint with the Mets in which he hit .234/.318/.369, he'll look for a career resurgence in Seattle.
