Tue Mar 15 201113:25Report: Hernandez hasn't locked up 2B yet
The New York Daily News' Andy Martino reports that Mets manager Terry Collins has not decided on Luis Hernandez as his starting second baseman yet.
Martino came to the conclusion after talking to several people in the know. He says that while Hernandez is definitely in the mix, it's a fluid situation. Even if Collins has indeed not decided yet, Hernandez does seem like the favorite at this point. Though he's a completely underwhelming option, no one else appears ready to take the job.

Tue Mar 15 201108:51Mets to name Luis Hernandez as starting 2B?
According to Mike Puma of the New York Post, Mets manager Terry Collins plans to name Luis Hernandez as his starting second baseman.
Hernandez entered spring training as a fringe candidate for the gig, but he has hit .417 in 12 Grapefruit League at-bats thus far and the Mets don't really have a better option. Luis Castillo should be cut, Brad Emaus doesn't have a major league-caliber skill set, and former first baseman Daniel Murphy isn't strong enough defensively. The situation can be avoided for fantasy purposes.

Sun Mar 13 201108:34Luis Hernandez could get a look at 2B
Mets manager Terry Collins intends to give Luis Hernandez a shot at the second base job.
"He was the starting second baseman before he broke his foot [last year]," Collins said. "I think we need to get him some action." When asked if Hernandez was added to the competition because he's been unimpressed with the other competitors, Collins said, "I don't know if I added him. I think we just forgot that he could play there... He's on the outside, [but] at least we know he can play there." Not exactly a ringing endorsement. The reality is that not only is Hernandez a longshot for the second base job, he might not even make the team.

Mon Jan 24 201117:30Hernandez (foot) 'feels good' swinging bat
Luis Hernandez felt "pretty good" after swinging the bat in the cage for the first time since undergoing surgery on his right foot last September.
In one of the more memorable moments in an otherwise forgettable season for Mets fans, Hernandez fouled a pitch off his foot last September and then hobbled around the bases after cranking a home run off Tim Hudson. It was later revealed that he needed surgery after fracturing the right metatarsal bone in his right foot. Back to full health, the 26-year-old infielder is set to battle the recently-acquired Chin-lung Hu for a backup middle infielder job during spring training. Hernandez is out of options, but that probably won't provide the Mets with extra incentive to carry him on the Opening Day roster.

Sat Sep 11 201013:45Manuel: We need Hernandez's offense
Mets manager Jerry Manuel said that he has to play Luis Hernandez because he needs his offense in the lineup.
It might be the first time anyone has ever referred to Hernandez's offense in a positive light. He's hit .250 with two homers in 256 career major league at-bats and .251 with 15 home runs in nearly 3,300 minor league at-bats. It's an indictment of Ruben Tejada's offense (.188 average this season) more than anything else. Hernandez is making his sixth straight start at second Saturday, though that's due partly to Tejada playing shortstop while Jose Reyes was out.
