Valdespin has cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A New Orleans on Wednesday, Joe Frisaro of MLB.com reports.

Valdespin was designated for assignment last Friday, and has now officially cleared through waivers. In two games with the Marlins, the 27-year-old went hitless in four at-bats. He'll now return to Triple-A New Orleans and await another opportunity with the Marlins.

After an 0-for-3 showing Friday in his first start of the year with Miami, Valdespin was bumped from the 40-man roster to create room for Saturday's starter, Adam Conley. The 27-year-old Valdespin has hit .287/.342/.378 with one homer and six steals in 60 games with Triple-A New Orleans this season.

Valdespin was officially recalled from Triple-A New Orleans on Tuesday, Joe Capozzi of the Palm Beach Post reports.

With Marcell Ozuna headed to the minors and Giancarlo Stanton (hand) sidelined, Valdespin will come up to provide outfield depth. The 27-year-old had been hitting .287 with 16 RBI and 14 extra-base hits in 60 Triple-A games.

The Marlins are demoting Marcell Ozuna to Triple-A New Orleans to work things out, creating a need for another outfielder on the big-league roster. With Giancarlo Stanton (hand) sidelined for the next 4-6 weeks, the Marlins will likely use a slew of different players alongside Christian Yelich in the outfield. Valdespin, Ichiro Suzuki and Cole Gillespie all figure to get quite a few at-bats, though none of the bunch has any real upside.

Valdespin will be recalled from Triple-A New Orleans on Thursday, Clark Spencer of the Miami Herald reports.

The move comes with the expectation that Martin Prado (shoulder) will be placed on the disable list. Valdespin offers some versatility in the field for the Marlins who are now down an infielder and will provide depth around the diamond as Derek Dietrich covers third base while Prado is out. Through 46 games at Triple-A this season, Valdespin posted a .290/.355/.358 slash line with six stolen bases. He's spent the majority of the 2015 season playing at second base and in the outfield, but has made some starts at third base in previous seasons and could represent an emergency option there.

Valdespin fared reasonably well immediately upon his promotion to Miami after the All-Star break, posting a .796 OPS with two homers in 12 July games. Things predictably went south in a hurry, however, and Valdespin finished with a .214/.280/.347 batting line in 52 games, resulting in the outright assignment to Triple-A. He's unlikely to take on a significant role with any team next season.

Valdespin went 1-for-3 with a run and two RBI in Monday's win over the Mets.

Valdespin was the latest Marlins player to get a turn in right field to fill the monstrous shoes of Giancarlo Stanton. He came through with a two-run single in the seventh to put the Marlins on the board during the comeback win. The utility man was making his first start in September after he flamed out during brief audition as Miami's regular second baseman back in mid-August. He should see a couple of starts over the season's final two weeks while looking to pad a mediocre .220/.276/.363 slash line through 91 at-bats.

Valdespin popped a pinch-hit home run in Friday's loss to the Braves.

The infielder had a short run as Miami's regular second baseman but booted that opportunity with some poor play in the field. He's got a nice mix of power and speed but his lack of defensive polish makes it difficult for Valdespin to find regular at-bats.

Valdespin appears to have lost his hold on the starting second base job.

He will be on the bench again Wednesday against the Rangers, according to MLB.com's Joe Frisaro, marking the sixth straight game he's been out of the lineup. Valdespin has posted a weak .273 on-base percentage over 72 at-bats with Marlins and hasn't made a strong case for the club to bring him back in the offseason.

Valdespin is out of the lineup Thursday against the Diamondbacks, Joe Frisaro of MLB.com reports.

Valdespin will head back to the bench after three straight starts, opening the door for Donovan Solano to step in at the keystone. A right-hander is on the mound for Arizona (Chase Anderson), so it seems the second base situation will be a loose timeshare rather than a strict platoon.

Valdespin is out of the lineup again Sunday, Juan C. Rodriguez of the South Florida Sun Sentinel reports.

Donovan Solano will once again draw the assignment at second base, pushing Valdepin to the bench for the third time in five games. Valdespin is just 1-for-his-last-16 and it looks the 26-year-old may be deployed primarily off the bench for the time being. He could also be in danger of losing his roster spot.

Valdespin is out of the lineup Saturday against the Reds, Joe Frisaro of MLB.com reports.

Saturday's absence is just Valdespin's second in the team's last 14 games, but also his second in four days. Donovan Solano will take over at second base and in the two-hole in the batting order. Valdespin still seems like the slight favorite for playing time at the keystone, but he's just 1-for-16 in his last four games and could lose the job if he continues to struggle.

Valdespin is not in the lineup Wednesday versus the Pirates, MLB.com reports.

It looks to be nothing more than a scheduled day off for the second basemen, who's started the Marlins' last 10 games. He'll concede his spot Wednesday to Enrique Hernandez, who will bat seventh in the lineup.

Valdespin went 2-for-4 with an RBI in Friday's loss to the Reds.

Since being called up on July 19, Valdespin has essentially become an everyday player for the Marlins and a fixture in the two-spot ahead of Giancarlo Stanton. Valdespin has responded nicely with a .268/.302/.512 slash over 13 games with for runs scored, five RBI and five total extra-base hits. The addition of versatile utility man Enrique Hernandez as well as the presence of Ed Lucas, Donovan Solano and Derek Dietrich (15-day DL, wrist) makes the Marlins' second base job an awfully crowded situation, but Valdespin clearly has the leg up on playing time right now.

Valdespin collected two hits and scored a run in Tuesday's win over the Nationals.

Since being recalled, Valdespin has started in eight of 10 games for the Marlins, seeing time at both second base and in the outfield. He's not the most disciplined hitter, but does offer a solid combination of power and speed at the dish. He's also been seeing plenty of time batting out of the second spot in the Marlins' order, a position that should keep him fairly productive when in the lineup. It is worth noting, however, that Ed Lucas was recalled earlier this week and his presence could eat into the available at-bats at second base, which Valdespin was already splitting with Donovan Solano.

Marlins manager Mike Redmond indicated Saturday that Jordany Valdespin will see regular playing time at second base for the time being.

Valdespin is starting at second and in the No. 2 spot in the batting order Sunday for the second time in as many games since being promoted. "Our offense has been slow and sluggish, so we are looking for a guy that can hit at the top of the order . and get us going a little bit," Redmond said. Valdespin is only a .220/.271/.378 hitter across 354 career plate appearances, but he has a little bit of pop and can run, so the 26-year-old is worth a shot in deeper leagues while he's hitting in front of Giancarlo Stanton.

The highly-talented 26-year-old is expected to function in a utility role with the Marlins. He was hitting .270/.374/.437 with eight homers, 29 RBI and 15 steals for New Orleans.

Word is that Valdespin left the team in frustration after being pinch-hit for. He's not expected to return. The 26-year-old latched on with the Marlins after being released by the Mets in December, but he continues to show that he could be more trouble than he's worth.

A source told Cotillo that Valdespin "has got his act together and is working hard to make a difference on the field for whoever signs him." The Mets non-tendered Valdespin earlier this month even though he wasn't arbitration-eligible yet after he batted just .188/.250/.316 in 144 plate appearances in 2013. He also served a PED suspension and has had makeup issues, but someone will take a shot on him on a minor league deal.
