Marlins purchased the contract of RHP John Maine from Triple-A New Orleans.

John Maine pitched two perfect innings in relief against the Yankees on Friday.
Maine has allowed one run and two hits in five innings this spring. He's still a long shot to break camp with a rotation spot, but if he goes down to Triple-A and turns in a strong April, he could get a chance.

Fri Feb 22 201321:57John Maine in the mix for Marlins rotation
Marlins manager Mike Redmond indicated on Friday that John Maine is "in the mix" for a spot in the Opening Day rotation.
The 31-year-old righty hasn't appeared in the majors since the 2010 season, and spent the entire 2012 campaign with the Yankees' Triple-A affiliate, where he posted a 4.97 ERA and 1.34 WHIP over 15 starts. Now that he's fully healthy, it's not out of the question that he could earn one of the final rotation spots with a strong effort this spring.

Thu May 10 201213:27Red Sox release RHP John Maine
Red Sox released RHP John Maine.
The 32-year-old right-hander signed a minor league contract in January but never made it out of extended spring training. Maine posted an ugly 7.43 ERA over 11 starts with the Rockies' Triple-A affiliate last season before leaving the team in June following more shoulder issues. He should be able to land a minor league contract from a new organization, but his odds of making it back to the big leagues are close to nonexistent.

Mon Nov 7 201114:56Maine healthy, looking for new organization
According to Andy Martino of the New York Daily News, free agent right-hander John Maine "feels healthy" and "will be looking for a team this winter."
Maine posted a horrific 7.43 ERA and 2.07 WHIP across 11 starts at Triple-A Colorado Springs this season before a shoulder injury left him unable to pitch. He's had the past several months to fully recover and should be able to land a minor league contract from a new organization this offseason. But it's fair to say that his days as a reliable major league pitcher are far behind him. He was even considering retirement back in June.

Wed Jun 22 201120:46John Maine mulling retirement
John Maine is mulling retirement after his latest poor start Monday for Triple-A Colorado Springs.
Maine allowed 10 hits and eight runs in 4 1/3 innings Monday and now has posted a 7.43 ERA with a 35/37 K/BB ratio over 46 innings. He also dealt with some shoulder soreness last month and has yet to pitch more than 4 1/3 innings since early May. For now, he's taking a leave of absence while weighing his options. Even if he does decide to keep rolling, it's clear he's a long way from contributing in the majors.

Sat May 21 201109:41John Maine dealing with shoulder soreness
John Maine hasn't pitched for Triple-A Colorado Springs since May 3 due to shoulder soreness.
That's no good. Maine is, of course, working his way back from shoulder surgery. He has an opt out clause on June 1, but he's unlikely to exercise it if he's hurt. The Rockies need a spot starter next Saturday due to Tuesday's doubleheader, but obviously Maine won't be under consideration unless he experiences a miraculous recovery. Greg Reynolds seems like the most likely option for that start.

Thu Mar 24 201117:47Maine to open season at Triple-A
John Maine will open the year at Triple-A.
It's the right call, maybe the only call. Maine is still building strength in his arm from shoulder surgery and can work out any remaining kinks down on the farm while Esmil Rogers gets a shot in the early-season big league rotation. If Rogers falters, which seems likely, Maine will act as a potentially solid insurance man.

Sat Mar 19 201117:47John Maine struggles in first spring start
John Maine gave up five runs -- one earned -- on four hits and two walks over three innings Saturday against the Reds in his first start of the spring.
He obviously wasn't helped out by his defense, but Maine wasn't too sharp in this one. It's not surprising, given how little he's pitched over the last eight months. Maine could make the team as a long man out of the bullpen or possibly be placed on the DL while he builds up his innings.

Thu Mar 17 201113:20Maine to make first Cactus League start Sat.
John Maine is scheduled to make his first Cactus League start Saturday against the Reds.
Jhoulys Chacin was moved to a "B" game. Maine gave up three hits over two scoreless innings in his spring debut last Wednesday against the Angels, but this will be his first start. He still has an outside shot at being the Rockies' fifth starter, though Esmil Rogers is considered the favorite.

Thu Mar 10 201113:16Maine (shoulder) solid in spring debut
John Maine (shoulder) gave up three hits over two scoreless innings in his spring debut Wednesday against the Angels.
"In my mind, he was reminiscent of the John Maine we have seen in the past," said Rockies manager Jim Tracy. "John Maine, when he is right like you saw a little bit today, has the capability to pitch up in the zone. ... I felt that for the first time out there since joining us that the ball is coming out very, very well." Maine reportedly reached 92 mph on the radar gun multiple times during his outing, which is a great sign after shoulder surgery. The 29-year-old right-hander might not be with the Rockies to start the year, but he has a real chance to contribute this season.

Tue Mar 8 201116:23Maine to make spring debut Wednesday
John Maine (shoulder) is expected to make his Cactus League debut Wednesday.
The Rockies have brought Maine along slowly after shoulder surgery, mostly using him in intersquad games, but he's finally ready to make his spring debut. He's not really in the mix for the Opening Day roster, but will serve as rotation insurance at Triple-A Colorado Springs while he builds up his arm strength.

Thu Feb 17 201112:16Rockies sign John Maine to minor league deal
Rockies signed RHP John Maine to a minor league contract.
Along with the Rockies, the Phillies and Royals were among 6-7 teams that had interest in the former Met. Maine's deal includes an out clause that he can exercise if he doesn't make the Opening Day roster. If he does, he reportedly could make about $3 million. There's not a spot open in the Rockies rotation, so Maine would likely serve as a long man in the bullpen initially if he does make the club. He is reportedly feeling great following July shoulder surgery.
Wed Feb 16 201117:48Royals have interest in righty John Maine
Bob Dutton of the Kansas City Star reports that the Royals are interested in free agent John Maine.
Maine would only get a minor league contract out of Kansas City, but that may be enough to satisfy the recovering right-hander. He underwent surgery on his throwing shoulder last July and is still in recovery mode to some extent. Maine is expected to decide on a team soon. The Phillies have also expressed interest.

Wed Feb 16 201115:34Maine expected to sign this week
Jim Salisbury of CSN Philadelphia reports that John Maine will sign "in the next day or two."
Maine has several possibilities right now, but a source tells Salisbury that the Phillies are on his short list. The 29-year-old right-hander is coming off shoulder surgery, so he'll likely have to settle for a spring training invite.
