Ross, who was designated for assignment Saturday, was released by the Athletics on Tuesday, MLB.com's Jane Lee reports.

The 34-year-old Ross posted a .628 OPS over 202 at-bats for the Diamondbacks last year, and he was off to a 2-for-22 start with the A's this season. He may be able to find work elsewhere as a right-handed bat off the bench, but it's also quite possible he'll have to settle for a minor-league gig. While his track record against left-handed pitching is strong, he only managed a .639 OPS versus southpaws last season.

He was barely playing for the A's, so when they needed to open up a spot on the 40-man roster, he was an obvious candidate. He will now go through waivers and could end up getting claimed by someone looking for a right-handed bench bat.

Ross is out of the lineup Thursday.

He went 1-for-5 with two RBI in his A's debut Wednesday, but with a righty on the mound for the Rangers he will take a seat on the bench. Look for Ross to only start against lefties going forward.

After signing with the A's earlier in the day Ross will start in right field and bat second Wednesday against the Rangers.

This doesn't come as a big surprise, although Ross getting slotted into the two hole is a bit unexpected. Ross Detwiler, a lefty, is starting for the Rangers and Ross has a career .294/.360/.557 slash line against southpaws, so he is a solid play in daily leagues if he is available in the player universe already.

The A's are a desirable landing spot for a player like Ross, who was probably just looking for a place where he would see some starts. Everyone on Oakland's 25-man roster gets used in some way, and Ross's career .294/.360/.557 slash line against lefties should get him some starts in the short side of a left field platoon.

Ross is expected to sign with the A's once he clears waivers Wednesday, Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reports.

The Rangers have reportedly expressed interest in Ross as well, but he's chosen the A's, with whom he should see starts in left field against left-handed pitching at least until Coco Crisp (elbow) returns. Ross was released by the Diamondbacks over the weekend but Arizona is still on the hook to pay Ross nearly $9.5 million this season.

Ross hit .256 in 16 games this spring and looked healthy, but didn't fit into a rebuilding club. Arizona will owe Ross $8.5 million plus a $1 million buyout, according to Ken Rosenthal of FoxSports.com.

Ross feels much better this spring after struggling in his recovery from a major hip injury in August of 2013, the Arizona Republic reports.

Improved health has allowed Ross to see a much greater workload this spring compared to the last two he's gone through with the Diamondbacks. Thanks to his contract, he has a good chance of sticking on the Opening Day roster as a right-handed hitting corner outfielder. His role figures to be that of a platoon partner for one of David Peralta or Ender Inciarte, although things could become more complicated if the team decides that Yasmany Tomas cannot handle the defensive rigors of third base.

Ross could see regular time in the outfield against left-handed starters if the Diamondbacks keep him on their roster through Opening Day, the team's official site reports.

Entering the final season of a three-year, $26 million deal, the Diamondbacks would willingly flip Ross to another club in need of outfield depth, but they'd likely have to eat salary in order to make a move. With David Peralta and Ender Inciarte offering left-handed bats on the Arizona bench, Ross provides balance, albeit without the ability to slot in as an option in center field. Keep in mind, however, that Ross wasn't rehabbing an injury this offseason as he was forced to a year ago while recovering from hip surgery, but the small side of a platoon doesn't offer much in the way of playing time volume if he remains in Arizona.

Ross is out of the lineup Thursday against the Giants.

Ender Inciarte will move out to right field Thursday with Nolan Reimold slotting in at left. Ross recently started three straight games in place of David Peralta (back), but Peralta is expected to return Friday, meaning Ross will be deployed primarily off the bench moving forward.

Ross went 3-for-4 with a double and a run scored in the Diamondbacks' 7-2 loss to the Dodgers on Sunday.

It's Ross's best game since returning from injury Sept. 3. He's 5-for-10 in five games since being activated by the team. Ross will battle with David Peralta and A.J. Pollock for a spot in the Diamondbacks' outfield throughout the remainder of the season.

Ross (calf) was activated from the 15-day DL on Monday.

A left calf strain pushed Ross to the DL back on July 22, but he showed enough during batting practice and running drills last weekend to warrant activation. The 31-year-old has hit just .238/.287/.306 with two homers in 66 games with Arizona this season, and his opportunities to start may be limited over the final month, with A.J. Pollock (hand) also likely to return to an outfield mix that now includes Nolan Reimold.

Ross (calf) is expected to rejoin the Diamondbacks on Monday or soon after, Jack Magruder of Fox Sports Arizona reports.

He took live batting practice and ran Friday, suggesting that his return is not far away as he's been able to progressively build up his baseball activities during the rehab process.

It appears Ross isn't progressing as quickly as the Diamondbacks had hoped. He may still require some time before returning to the roster, meaning the Diamondbacks will continue with Alfredo Marte, Ender Inciarte and David Peralta manning the outfield while Ross and A.J. Pollock continue on the road to recovery.

Diamondbacks placed OF Cody Ross on the 15-day disabled list with a left calf strain.

Ross tried to play through the injury, but that didn't go so well. He'll likely be out now for three weeks. Alfredo Marte was called up in a corresponding move.

The veteran outfielder has had his share of difficulties at the plate since returning from the disabled list, slashing a paltry .191/.234/.247 in his first 28 games. He shouldn't be started in anything other than NL-only formats until he shows signs of life at the plate.
