OF Emilio Bonifacio was in the clubhouse after being called up from Triple-A Gwinnett on Sunday, but he couldn't be immediately activated and the Braves went with 24 active players. "It's sort of a convoluted rule from MLB," said Billy Ryan, director of baseball operations. Tue Aug 25 201519:52Bonifacio signed minor league contract with Cubs on Tuesday
Bonifacio signed a minor league contract with the Cubs on Tuesday, Gordon Wittenmyer of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.
A week after being released by the White Sox, Bonifacio has agreed to head north in hopes of receiving a September callup to the major leagues. Bonifacio did little in his 47 games with the South Siders, collecting just 13 hits in 78 at-bats (.167 average), but he would at least provide the Cubs with speed and defensive versatility in a utility role over the final month of the regular season.
Tue Aug 18 201520:57Bonifacio released by White Sox on Tuesday
Bonifacio was released by the White Sox on Tuesday, SB Nation's Chris Cotillo reports.
After being designated for assignment it sounds like Bonifacio was granted his release so that he could pursue a contract with another organization. He received just 82 plate appearances with the White Sox, so it is not surprising that he wanted to try his luck elsewhere. It is possible that he could catch on as a utility player with another team down the stretch but do not look for him to receive regular playing time.
