Uggla went 1-for-1 with a solo home run in a pinch-hit appearance in a 2-0 win over the Mets on Saturday.

That marks his second homer of the season and seeing his name pop up is a surprise in itself. The once power-hitting second baseman has been relegated to bench duties, as his average has plummeted and power has dropped off significantly in recent years. Uggla will likely have trouble finding a roster spot on any team come next season.

Uggla (back) is back with the Nationals and has been activated from the DL, Dan Kolko of MASN reports.

Uggla has been on the DL since August 8, and he was most recently rehabbing at Double-A Harrisburg. The Nats opted to wait until Tuesday to activate him in order to avoid making a corresponding move. Uggla figures to play a part-time, utility role over the next few weeks as the Nats chase a playoff berth.

The second baseman has gone 3-for-7 in his first two games with Harrisburg. Uggla appeared in 56 games for the Nationals before heading to the DL with early August with back issues, but with the team since returning several key players from injury, his role will be limited upon his activation. Look for the Nationals to wait until September to bring Uggla back to avoid making a corresponding roster move.

Uggla (back) has begun a rehab assignment at High-A Hagerstown, James Wagner of the Washington Post reports.

Uggla will be eligible to come off the DL on Sunday, but at this point it's unclear whether he'll require more than the minimum 15 days. He figures to play in multiple games at Hagerstown, where Denard Span is also rehabbing, before the club makes a decision on his status.

Uggla was placed on the 15-day DL on Saturday with back spasms.

The 35-year-old has played a minimal role since Anthony Rendon returned late last month, logging a mere two at-bats in the team's last 13 games. His placement on the DL (conveniently) opens a spot on the active roster for Stephen Strasburg (oblique), Saturday's starter against Colorado.

The 35-year-old found his way into the lineup for the second time in the series after not making a single start during the first 25 days of June. Uggla stepped in for Danny Espinosa, who took over at the hot corner for Yunel Escobar (hand). Escobar did return for Game 2, however, so it seems likely Uggla will continue to serve mostly as a pinch-hitter.

Uggla hit his first home run of the season Tuesday against the Braves, a three-run shot in the ninth inning to give the Nationals the win. He had three hits in the game in five plate appearances.

This was by far Uggla's best performance of the season. Heading into the game, he had just two RBIs in 13 games with 11 strikeouts and an on-base percentage of just .200.

Uggla came off the bench Monday to go 1-for-2 with an RBI.

The second baseman has struggled mightily at the plate in part-time action this season. Through 37 at-bats Uggla has a .135 average and just two RBI. When Anthony Rendon returns for the Nationals, Uggla's time will be diminished even further.

Uggla is out of the lineup Thursday, MASN's Dan Kolko reports.

Danny Espinosa gets the start at second base with lefty Cole Hamels on the mound for Philadelphia. Uggla is hitting just .130 on the season, and if he's not going to hit, the Nationals will be fine just taking Espinosa's excellent defense and punting offense at that position while Anthony Rendon is out.

Uggla is in the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Red Sox, MLB.com's William Ladson reports.

Uggla will return to action and hit eighth Wednesday after sitting out in favor of Danny Espinosa the last couple days. Expect the two to continue sharing the second base duties moving forward.

Uggla started five of the Nationals' first six games, but he will be held out Monday for the second time in three games after getting off to a 2-for-18 (.111) start. Danny Espinosa will cover second base for the Nationals on Monday.

Uggla went 1-for-4 on Wednesday with a double, his first hit as a National.

He's also only struck out once in two games, a good initial sign that Uggla's vision issues might truly be behind him. His comeback story is one of the more intriguing narratives of the early season, but his spot in the starting lineup with the Nats will last only until Anthony Rendon comes off the DL.

He may not have the starting job for long, depending on how quickly Anthony Rendon makes it back from his knee injury, but Uggla's comeback from vision problems could be one of the more interesting stories through the first couple of weeks of the season. Other than the Nats needing a DH, Saturday's lineup looks to be the one the club will use to kick off the regular season. Uggla will likely only have the starting second base job as long as Anthony Rendon (knee) is on the shelf, but he could provide a short-term power boost from a middle infield spot if he truly is recovered from the vision issues that put his career in jeopardy.

The Nationals are giving Yunel Escobar some work at third base, the Washington Post reports.

Escobar was brought in to be the club's second baseman, but Anthony Rendon's knee injury changes the Nats' infield picture considerably. If the club is comfortable with Escobar at third to begin the season, it could open the door for Uggla to be the starting second baseman, although Danny Espinosa is also still part of the equation.

Uggla is having a solid spring so far, hitting .292/.452/.500 with an impressive 6:3 BB:K ratio in 24 at-bats.

The walks and strikeouts are a great sign that the vision issues that have plagued him the last couple of seasons are a thing of the past. Unless Yunel Escobar's oblique injury forces him to begin the season on the DL there likely won't be any room for Uggla on the Nationals' roster, but he may be playing well enough for another club to give him a chance.
