Wed Aug 18 201022:23Marlins sign Wes Helms to 1-yr. extension
Marlins signed 3B Wes Helms to a one-year, $1 million contract extension.
Helms has done a solid enough job at third base since the Marlins traded Jorge Cantu to the Rangers in July. The 34-year-old will make for a fine backup infielder in 2011, assuming the Fish make a few upgrades, and got a nice little raise from the $950,000 that he's earning this year.

Wes Helms drove in three runs against the Braves on Sunday, including the game's winning run off reliever Jesse Chavez in the bottom of the 11th.
Helms hit a big two-run triple in the fourth inning and later came around to score to give the Marlins a 4-1 lead. The Braves would later come back to tie it, but the Marlins quickly loaded the bases against Chavez in the 11th and Helms played the hero with a single to win it. The win evens the Marlins' record at 49-49.
Sat Jul 17 201017:06Yankees interested in Marlins' Wes Helms
Joe Frisaro of MLB.com reports that the Yankees have shown interest in Marlins infielder Wes Helms.
Helms and Yankees manager Joe Girardi know each other well. The 34-year-old corner infielder has hit just .243/.298/.391 this season in 115 at-bats, but he could help Alex Rodriguez get some extra days off down the stretch. Welms will be a free agent after the 2010 season.
