Novak was successful on two field-goal attempts and two extra-point kicks in Thursday night's loss to the Colts.

Novak took a little heat last week when he was well short on a 53-yard effort, but showed a better leg Thursday. His longest effort was from 49 yards that looked like it would have cleared from a longer distance.

Texans head coach Bill O'Brien said Novak is adjusting to the kicking operation -- the snapper and the holder -- when discussing the kicker's miss in Sunday's loss to the Falcons, the Houston Chronicle reports.

O'Brien acknowledged the actual kick -- a 53-yarder that fell well short of the crossbar -- was not close, but wants to see Novak getting "comfortable with the whole operation."

Novak made all three of his extra-point kicks and missed a 53-yard field-goal attempt in Houston's Week 4 loss to the Falcons.

Novak was brought in this week to replace Randy Bullock, who was released. The field-goal miss is a forgivable offense and his extra-point conversions are something to rejoice after Bullock missed two during the first three weeks. Additionally, Novak had two touchbacks on kickoffs, an area of the kicking game considered a weakness for him.

Novak was signed by the Texans on Tuesday, ESPN's Tania Ganguli reports.

Novak will replace Randy Bullock, who missed two extra points in the first three games. Novak lost a kicking battle in San Diego this preseason, despite converting 86.3 percent of his field-goal attempts during his four-year tenure with the Chargers. His accuracy shouldn't be too much of an issue, but he doesn't have a great leg and will be attached to a very shaky Houston offense.

Novak is still the favorite to hang on as the kicker in San Diego, but Lambo, the undrafted rookie from Texas A&M, is pushing hard for a job. For now, this is a situation that bears monitoring as the preseason rolls on.

The signing of an undrafted rookie in camp is apparently not a problem for the veteran kicker. "I love it," says Novak of the Lambo signing. "I love to compete. I think only positive things can happen when you're pushed." Novak is definitely expected to open the season as the Bolts number one kicker. His accuracy has never been a problem with a 86.3% conversion rate on field goal attempts in his career, but the Bolts would probably like to see him improve his distance on kickoffs. Novak was last in the league in percentage of touchbacks last season.

After missing two kicks in last week's loss, Novak made good this week, putting the finishing touch on San Diego's improbable, season-saving comeback. However, a matchup against a stout Kansas City defense awaits in Week 17.

Novak is looking great kicking for a team that is definitely clicking on offense right now. He even hit a field goal from 53 yards which was nullified by penalty in this game.

Novak was 4-for-4 on field goal attempts, hitting from 23, 33, 34, and 37 yards on Sunday against the Jaguars. He was also perfect on all three of his PATs.

Novak is now a perfect 10-for-10 on the season and has cemented himself as one of the most reliable kickers in the league.

Chargers insider Kevin Acee believed that Nate Kaeding had already locked up the job even before Thursday night. But Novak may have sealed the deal by banging this chip-shot off the left upright. Kaeding, fully recovered from an ACL tear in his non-kicking leg, will be on the fantasy radar.
