C Brett Hayes was acquired by the White Sox from the Arizona Diamondbacks on Wednesday in exchange for cash considerations. The White Sox then assigned Hayes to Triple-A Charlotte. Hayes hit just .161 with no homers and four RBIs in 18 games for Triple-A Reno prior to the trade. The White Sox are the fifth organization Hayes has played for since he was selected by the Florida Marlins in the second round of the 2005 draft. He is a lifetime .205 hitter with 13 homers and 37 RBIs in 189 big league games dating back to 2009.

Hayes was outrighted to Triple-A Columbus on Tuesday.

He cleared waivers after being designated for assignment last week and will continue to offer organizational depth at catcher.

Hayes made his second start of the season Tuesday but was held hitless in four at-bats.

Hayes only plays sparingly behind Roberto Perez and Yan Gomes when he's healthy. In four games this season, Hayes has just one hit, a home run on April 20 against the White Sox.

A career .208 hitter, the 31-year old Hayes hasn't had a very productive offensive career to date. He'll continue to back up Roberto Perez behind the dish with Yan Gomes sidelined.

As expected, Hayes will serve as the backup to Roberto Perez, with Yan Gomes (knee) likely out for the next six-to-eight weeks. Hayes owns a meager .209/.252/.353 slash line over 428 career big-league plate appearances, with his sky-high strikeout rate (31.1 percent) playing a major role.
