Wed May 25 201114:21Rays claim RHP Buente off waivers
Rays claimed RHP Jay Buente off waivers from the Marlins.
Buente was designated for assignment by the Marlins earlier this week. While the 27-year-old right-hander hasn't been given much on an opportunity in the major leagues, he has a 3.04 ERA over parts of six seasons in the minors while averaging 9.4 K/9 and 3.6 BB/9. The Rays' organization usually manages to find some diamonds in the rough for their bullpen and we wouldn't be surprised if Buente is the latest.

Sun May 22 201115:52Buente ineffective in Johnson's place
Making his first major-league start in place of an injured Josh Johnson on Sunday, Jay Buente was ineffective, allowing four runs (three earned) on five hits and three walks in just three innings of a Marlins loss to the Rays.
He struck out one. The Marlins are hoping Buente will have to make just one more start in place of their ace, but even if he ends up getting more, today was probably an indication that he's best avoided in NL-only leagues.
