Fri May 15 201515:36Veras signed minor league contract with Astros on Friday
Veras signed a minor league contract with the Astros on Friday.
Veras has agreed to rejoin the Astros, with whom he spent most of the 2013-14 campaigns, after being released by the Braves toward the end of spring training. He will report to extended spring training to get ready for game action and will likely head to Triple-A Fresno before long, with the hope of getting the call up within a month or so. It's hard to imagine Veras will see any save chances.
Thu Mar 19 201509:55Veras released by Braves on Thursday
Veras was released by the Braves on Thursday.
Veras tallied 46.0 innings in 2014 between time spent with the Cubs and Astros, posting a combined 4.50 ERA and 1.39 WHIP. The 34-year-old right-hander should still have some suitors, though he appears far removed from pitching in high-leverage situations.

Veras signed a minor league contract with the Braves on Tuesday that includes an invite to spring training, Mark Bowman of MLB.com reports.
Veras turned his 2014 campaign around after signing back on with the Astros in June, as he posted a 3.03 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 10.2 K/9 in 34 appearances with Houston. The right-hander's average fastball velocity dipped again last season (to 93.4 mph) and his walk rate jumped back up to 5.3 BB/9, but Veras' experience should give him an inside track at a bullpen spot. Veras was the second former closer to sign a minor league deal with Atlanta on Tuesday, with Matt Capps being the first.

Veras picked up his first save of the season Wednesday with a scoreless frame against the Yankees.
Chad Qualls was unavailable Wednesday due to minor back discomfort, but Veras preserved the 5-2 win for the Astros despite giving up a hit and a walk during the appearance. The veteran reliever earned 21 saves as a member of the Astros and Tigers last season, so he'll likely be used in save situations if Qualls is forced to miss any additional time.

Sun Jun 15 201411:35Astros bring back Jose Veras on minors deal
Astros signed RHP Jose Veras to a minor league contract.
Veras was released by the Cubs last week but has landed back with the club with which he had the most success. The veteran reliever put up an 8.10 ERA over just 13 1/3 innings this season for Chicago but could conceivably work his way back to being a late-inning option for the Astros. He'll report to the club's spring training complex first before eventually going to Triple-A Oklahoma City.

Tue Jun 10 201415:22Cubs release right-handed reliever Jose Veras
Cubs released RHP Jose Veras.
Veras was designated for assignment by the Cubs a week ago after posting an ugly 8.10 ERA over just 13 1/3 innings this season. The Cubs will be responsible for the remainder of his $3.85 million salary this season and the $150,000 buyout on his option for 2015. He should draw interest around MLB now that he's available at the league minimum.

Veras opened the 2014 season as the Cubs' primary closer, but he's now off their 40-man roster after posting an 8.10 ERA in 13 1/3 innings. The 33-year-old right-hander is earning a $4 million salary in 2014 and held a $5.5 million club option for the 2015 campaign.

Tue May 6 201416:08Jose Veras (oblique) throws rehab inning
Jose Veras (oblique) tossed a scoreless inning Tuesday in his first rehab appearance at Double-A Tennessee.
Veras retired all three batters he faced, throwing seven of his 11 pitches for strikes. He should return to the Cubs' bullpen next week and could quickly push himself back into the mix for save opportunities.

Jose Veras (oblique) will begin a rehab assignment with Double-A Tennessee soon.
Veras was placed on the DL last weekend with a strained left oblique, but he's evidently feeling better already. He should rejoin the Cubs' bullpen in a couple weeks if all goes well.

Sat Apr 26 201416:39Cubs place Jose Veras on the disabled list
Cubs placed RHP Jose Veras on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left oblique.
Veras opened the 2014 season as the Cubs' closer, but he has allowed 10 earned runs in just 5 2/3 innings and will now probably be out for the next three weeks. Chicago is using a ninth-inning committee at the moment.

Fri Apr 25 201418:40Jose Veras (oblique) unavailable on Friday
Jose Veras is unavailable for Friday's game against the Brewers due to a sore left oblique.
He's considered day-to-day for the time being, but if he doesn't progress quickly there's a chance that he could be in line for a trip to the disabled list.

Thu Apr 24 201418:02Jose Veras gives up two runs in relief
Jose Veras yielded two runs in his inning of work versus the Diamondbacks on Thursday.
Veras has pitched just twice since losing his closer gig April 11 and has given up five runs in those two outings. Of course, expecting him to be consistent while working once a week is way too much for manager Rick Renteria to ask. The Cubs either need to get him more work or make up an injury for him so he can go on a rehab assignment.

Mon Apr 21 201409:40Cubs want Veras to get another shot at closer
Cubs manager Rick Renteria said Sunday that he hopes Jose Veras can eventually return to ninth-inning duties.
Veras has been bumped from the Cubs' closer job temporarily as he works through some early-season kinks. "We certainly want to make sure we give Jose a chance to get back into the role and try to find situations we can allow him to work," said Renteria. "We're going to do our very best that he gets into a comfort level." Pedro Strop, Hector Rondon, and Justin Grimm are forming a ninth-inning committee for now.

Sat Apr 12 201412:36Jose Veras out for now as Cubs closer
Cubs manager Rick Renteria announced Saturday that Jose Veras is "out for now" as the Cubs closer.
After giving the veteran right-hander the dreaded vote of confidence after Friday's blown save, this is merely a formality. Renteria added that he'll see who emerges as a ninth inning option, but Pedro Strop and Hector Rondon should be viewed as the favorites.

Sat Apr 12 201409:45Renteria gives Jose Veras vote of confidence
Cubs manager Rick Renteria gave closer Jose Veras a vote of confidence on Friday, saying "he's still our guy".
Renteria elaborated saying that it was too early to make a move just yet, and that he believes Veras's stuff is still there. While it's a nice sentiment, he's blown each of his two save chances thus far while posting a 12.27 ERA, 2.46 WHIP and 3/7 K/BB ratio over his 3 2/3 innings of work, and has also hit three batters. Fantasy owners speculating for saves should stash Pedro Strop or Hector Rondon, as one more blown opportunity could mean the end for Veras.

Sat Apr 12 201401:00Veras blows save Friday against the Cardinals
Jose Veras allowed two runs Friday against the Cardinals to blow his second save of the season.
Veras' shaky start to the season continues. He allowed a hit, a walk, and hit two batters. The first run scored on a passed ball and Matt Carpenter eventually tied things up with a sacrifice fly. Veras was able to get Kolten Wong to ground out to escape the jam, but it was an ugly appearance. He now has now allowed five runs on two hits and seven walks over 3 2/3 innings this season. Cubs manager Rick Renteria said after the game that he's sticking by Veras as his closer, but he needs to turn it around soon.

Tue Apr 8 201408:55Renteria not concerned with Veras' struggles
Cubs manager Rick Renteria is not concerned with Jose Veras' early struggles.
Veras blew a save in his first appearance of the season last Wednesday against the Pirates and walked four batters and threw a wild pitch in two-thirds of an inning Sunday, but Renteria is optimistic that things will get better from here. "(Veras) has only thrown a couple of times for us and in the spring (nine appearances). It's very hard for me to say I am concerned at this point," said Renteria. "Would I have liked to have had it run a little cleaner for him? Absolutely. I think he does too. It was just a game that didn't work out the way he wanted to." Veras would likely need a few more bad appearances before a change is considered at closer, though we figure Pedro Strop will get another chance before the year is out.

Thu Apr 3 201411:51Jose Veras not available to pitch Thursday
Jose Veras is not available to pitch on Thursday.
Veras threw 38 pitches in his blown save Wednesday against the Pirates. He's not yet in danger of losing his grip on the Cubs' ninth-inning gig, but a few more hiccups could force a change from manager Rick Renteria.
