Sanches, now 35, hasn't pitched in the majors since 2012 and spent last season with the Royals' Triple-A affiliate. He'll finish his career with a 3.75 ERA over 195 appearances.

Phillies purchased the contract of RHP Brian Sanches from Triple-A Lehigh Valley.
He'll replace the injured David Herndon (elbow) on the active roster. Sanches, 33, had a 3.21 ERA and 12/2 K/BB ratio in 14 innings at the Triple-A level and owns a 3.58 ERA over parts of six seasons in the big leagues. Look for him in middle relief.

The Marlins had a bullpen day in Josh Johnson's rotation spot, and they decided to reward Sanches with his first career start after 166 relief appearances. He did a nice job, but he didn't hang around long enough to pick up the win. That went to Edward Mujica.

Brian Sanches threw off flat ground Thursday for the first time since straining his right hamstring a week ago.
Sanches can come off the DL on nine days and might be ready then. "To me when the 15 days are up, I want to be ready to go," Sanches said. "I don't know how realistic that is. It's feeling good right now. I haven't had any problems. Yesterday was pain free. The stuff I'm doing on the bike, treadmill stuff has been pain free. Stretching has been going real good. Hopefully, we can get out there quicker."

An MRI showed that Brian Sanches suffered a mild, Grade 1 strain of his right hamstring.
"A Grade 1 is the mildest case," said Sanches. "I think the plan is to try to play catch at the end of this week. Hopefully, we're only looking at two weeks (before returning from the DL)." He could begin playing catch as soon as this weekend.
