RHP Burke Badenhop had his $4 million mutual option declined by the Reds on Nov. 2, making him a free agent. He received a $1.5 million buyout. Badenhop, 32, went 2-4 with a 3.93 ERA in 68 relief appearances for Cincinnati this year.

After struggling badly early this season, Badenhop hasn't allowed a run since July 3, and has picked up three holds in the last month.
Badenhop is going to be pitching more in late innings for the Reds over the last two months, though he's not a good candidate to get saves. There's a limit to how valuable he can be going forward - he has but 19 strikeouts in 43.2 innings this year.

Badenhop's early struggles continued Friday, as he gave up four runs in the 11th inning to get the loss against the Cubs.
Badenhop's calling card is that he's a supreme ground ball pitcher, inducing ground balls at a 3.14 G/F rate last season. It's early, but that rate is down to 1.86 heading into Friday night, and his average fastball velocity has dropped from 89.3 mph to 87.4 mph.

Badenhop allowed his second homer in as many days Tuesday, giving up a grand slam by Elian Herrera, the first batter he faced on the night.
J.J. Hoover walked the bases loaded prior to Badenhop's arrival. Given that Badenhop's calling card is to induce ground balls, the back-to-back homers allowed is disturbing.
Fri Mar 20 201514:13Badenhop won't likely be Reds' set-up man
Badenhop won't likely be the Reds' set-up man, even though he's got a decent track record and is pitching well this spring, the Cincinnati Enquirer reports. "I think he's that situational guy when you need that ground ball because he's so good and adept at that situation," manager Bryan Price said.
There isn't really a locked-in setup guy right now. Sam LeCure didn't have a good season last year, Jumbo Diaz is somewhat untested, and the other options all have similar flaws. This could be an ongoing audition for the job.

Badenhop has signed a one-year contract with the Reds that contains a mutual option for 2016, the team announced.
Badenhop should compete for set-up duties in Cincinnati after career year with the Red Sox. His declining strikeout rate in recent years, down more than two K's per nine innings from 2011, is a red flag that he could lose effectiveness late in the game, but he made up for it in 2014 with a career-high 61 percent groundball rate.

Badenhop took the loss Monday, allowing a run in the 10th inning against the Rays.
Badenhop walked two and allowed two hitsincluding Matt Joyce's game-winner. The reliever has pitched well for the Red Sox this season, and has allowed just three runs in since July 8.

Badenhop picked up his seventh hold of the season in Wednesday's win over the Reds.
Badenhop yielded three groundballs over his 13 pitches to retire the side in the seventh inning. The 31-year-old owns a 2.59 ERA and 1.34 WHIP on the season, but his weak strikeout rate and meager hold totals won't make him rosterable most places.
Wed Apr 16 201400:04Badenhop takes the loss as White Sox walk off
Burke Badenhop got the loss on Tuesday as the White Sox defeated the Red Sox 2-1 on a walk-off throwing error by Xander Bogaerts.
Badenhop wasn't sharp in the ninth inning, trying to keep a tie game intact. After allowing two singles (lead-off man Alejandro De Aza was caught stealing after his hit) and issuing another walk, Marcus Semien knocked a ball to Bogaerts, who made a low throw which couldn't be dug out by first baseman Mike Carp for the third out of the inning, allowing the White Sox to walk off as 2-1 winners. Badenhop hasn't been reliable in five appearances to start the season, allowing runs in each of his last four appearances.

Acquired over the winter from the Rays for OF Raul Mondesi, Jr., Badenhop hasn't disappointed Milwaukee's brass, boasting a 2.11 ERA and 0.94 WHIP over 24 appearances. Badenhop hasn't given up an earned run in May, which has had a gastric bypass-type effect on his earned run average.

Tue May 17 201100:17Badenhop caps off crazy win for Marlins
Burke Badenhop turned in a scoreless 10th inning in a 1-1 game between the Mets and Marlins on Monday evening, but was just getting warmed up, as Marlins manager Edwin Rodriguez elected to let him bat in the top of the 11th inning, where he responded with what would prove to be the game-winning RBI single.
It was a truly bizarre night at Citi Field, with both teams getting key extra-innings hits from pitchers, and Mets manager Terry Collins electing to intentionally walk Chris Coghlan to get to Hanley Ramirez in the ninth inning, among other innings. On the mound, Badenhop has not exactly lit the world ablaze since his May 7 recall, posting a 2.08 WHIP in 4 1/3 innings of work.
