Sun Mar 4 201210:04J.D. Drew could consider bench role
Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe reports that J.D. Drew would consider accepting a bench role for a team "if it were close to his Georgia home."
Many have assumed that Drew will retire, but his agent, Scott Boras, says his client hasn't made any such announcement. The 36-year-old batted just .222/.315/.302 in 2011 and appeared in only 81 games due to injuries, but he'd make a fine bench option for the Braves or another team if he's indeed willing to accept a minor role.

Tue Jan 24 201212:41FA outfielder JD Drew 'very likely' to retire
According to CBS Sports' Jon Heyman, veteran outfielder J.D. Drew is "very likely" to retire.
Drew has struggled mightily to attract free agent interest this winter after batting just .222/.315/.302 in 2011 and appearing in only 81 games due to injuries. If he is indeed finished, the 36-year-old outfielder will finish with a cool .873 career OPS, 1,437 career hits and 242 career homers. He played for the Cardinals, Braves, Dodgers and Red Sox during a 14-year major league career.

Sun Jan 22 201208:36Red Sox won't bring back J.D. Drew
Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe was told by Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington that the team is not considering re-signing free agent outfielder J.D. Drew.
The Sox have some more money to play with after dealing Marco Scutaro Saturday, but they apparently feel comfortable with their right field situation and will instead use that cash to upgrade the rotation. Drew isn't planning on retiring like he previously indicated he might, but there's been little buzz this offseason as to where he might wind up. He could make for a solid platoon guy if he manages to stay healthy, as he can still hit right-handed pitching.

Mon Nov 14 201118:25J.D. Drew willing to play in right situation
J.D. Drew's agent Scott Boras said Monday that his client has not retired.
Drew, 35, was limited to just 81 games this season due to injuries to his left shoulder and right middle finger, batting .222/.315/.302 over 286 plate appearances. Boras said he is willing to play next season given the right situation, but it's hard to believe a team will rely on him to be a regular contributor at this point of his career.

Sun Sep 25 201117:04Red Sox activate Drew, start him Sunday night
Red Sox activated outfielder J.D. Drew from the 60-day disabled list.
Drew has not played since July because of a sore left shoulder and more recently a fractured knuckle on the middle finger of his right hand. He's in the lineup, batting seventh and playing right field, Sunday night. It's not a great sign for Boston that they are thrusting Drew into action for the first time in two months during Game Two of a doubleheader against the Yankees, with a mere half-game lead in the Wild Card race over Tampa Bay, but here we are. Drew hit an anemic .219/.317/.305 over 233 at-bats earlier this year.

Sun Sep 25 201111:00J.D. Drew could return for final series
J.D. Drew (finger) could return for the final series of the regular season.
He originally went on the DL with a shoulder injury, but it's the finger that's more of an issue at this point. However, Drew took indoor batting practice Friday and his finger is evidently feeling well enough that he could be activated soon. He could be added to the potential ALDS roster if he looks good over the final few games.

Sat Sep 24 201108:31J.D. Drew takes indoor batting practice
J.D. Drew (finger) took indoor batting practice Friday.
Red Sox manager Terry Francona said Drew's swings looked "OK," but he didn't provide a timetable for when the outfielder might return. At this point it would be a surprise if he's back before the end of the season, and if that's the case, it seems doubtful that he'd be active for the ALDS. Drew has not played since July because of a sore left shoulder and more recently a fractured knuckle on the middle finger of his right hand.

Tue Sep 20 201108:54Drew given cortisone shot for broken finger
J.D. Drew was given a cortisone shot in his fractured middle finger on Monday afternoon.
The Red Sox are hoping the pain-killing injection will help Drew accelerate his rehab. He's been on the disabled list since late July -- first with a left shoulder injury, and now with a broken right middle finger. There's no timetable for his return.

Fri Sep 16 201116:24Drew (finger) has setback with neck
J.D. Drew (finger) was scheduled to swing a bat Friday, but he is now dealing with a neck issue.
Drew was originally placed on the disabled list in late-July with a left shoulder impingement, but suffered a fractured right middle finger while on a minor league rehab assignment. It's not yet clear if his latest setback is a major one, but the Red Sox obviously can't count on his return anytime soon.

Tue Sep 13 201116:03Red Sox transfer OF Drew to 60-day DL
Red Sox transferred OF J.D. Drew from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day disabled list.
Boston made the move to open a spot on the 40-man roster for a slew of roster moves upcoming. Drew was originally placed on the disabled list in July with a left shoulder impingement, but made little progress after hurting his middle finger in a rehab game with Triple-A Pawtucket at the end of August. Drew was diagnosed with a fractured finger, which Red Sox GM Theo Epstein revealed Monday in a chat with WEEI radio in Boston. Josh Reddick should continue to get the majority of the playing time in right field.

Red Sox GM Theo Epstein revealed that bit of news Monday in a chat with WEEI radio in Boston. Drew is hoping to play through the discomfort, but he hasn't had much luck with that strategy yet. There's no telling when he might be activated from the disabled list.

Wed Sep 7 201115:48J.D. Drew (finger) not close to returning
During an appearance on WEEI in Boston on Wednesday, Red Sox manager Terry Francona indicated that J.D. Drew (finger) isn't close to returning from the disabled list.
Drew was originally placed on the disabled list in July with a left shoulder impingement, but has made little progress since spraining his middle finger in a rehab game with Triple-A Pawtucket at the end of August. "We don't know," said Francona. "He tried to throw yesterday and that didn't go real well. And he hasn't attempted to swing yet, so he's probably not on the horizon. And we haven't had him for a while now." With Drew's status in doubt, Josh Reddick should continue to get the majority of the playing time in right field.

Fri Sep 2 201108:21J.D. Drew out for at least another week
J.D. Drew (finger) won't be activated off the disabled list for "at least a week."
Drew hurt his finger while completing a rehab assignment for an injured shoulder at Triple-A Pawtucket. Red Sox manager Terry Francona says there's a chance Drew will need to be sent on another rehab assignment before rejoining the team. At the very least, it sounds like you should be planning to be without him in your AL-only league for an additional 10 days.

Tue Aug 30 201117:36J.D. Drew (shoulder) to return Thursday
J.D. Drew (shoulder) is expected to return from the disabled list Thursday.
Drew is scheduled to play two games with Triple-A Pawtucket, beginning Tuesday night. He went 0-for-2 with a walk and a hit by pitch Friday in his first minor league rehab game with Single-A Lowell. Josh Reddick has really struggled following a hot start, so assuming he's healthy, Drew could get a chance to regain his old job in right field upon his return.

Fri Aug 19 201120:03J.D. Drew likely out until September
Rex Sox manager Terry Francona said the team is trying to decide when to send J.D. Drew (shoulder) out on a rehab assignment.
That would imply that he's likely to begin one soon, but for now he'll continue to take batting practice. Peter Abraham of the Boston Globe writes that it "sure looks like" the Sox won't activate Drew from the DL until roster expand.

Sun Aug 14 201108:35J.D. Drew limited to swinging in cage
J.D. Drew (shoulder) will be limited to swinging in a batting cage until Friday.
Drew had early batting practice before Saturday's game and took some aggressive swings to test his sore left shoulder. "I'm building my endurance up,'' said Drew. "It's about what we expected. There's some soreness and I think I'll deal with that the rest of the year. The strength gains we made helps. Now I have to battle out of some bad habits.'' He might need rehab assignment before likely returning in late August.
