Tue Feb 4 201422:03Matt Diaz announces retirement from baseball
Matt Diaz has announced his retirement from baseball.
Diaz revealed the news on his blog, saying that he's "not been as driven" as he has been in the past and is "ready to be daddy." Known for his ability to mash left-handers, Diaz finishes his career with a .322/.363/.495 batting line versus southpaws. He really hadn't hit much against lefties or righties in recent years, though, and is ready to hang up his cleats a month shy of his 36th birthday.

Tue Dec 10 201312:19Matt Diaz looking for an opportunity
Joe Frisaro of MLB.com is reporting that Matt Diaz is at the Winter Meetings in search of landing a role with a big league team.
Diaz underwent microfracture surgery on his right knee back in May and was considering retirement. He was able to play in only ten games in 2013 with the Marlins, logging just three hits in 18 at-bats. In the past, he has hit lefties well, so he could be a cheap fit for a team looking to bolster their bench. He will be 36 years old when the season begins.

Marlins placed OF Matt Diaz on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to May 19, with a left knee contusion.
Diaz should be ready to return to the active roster as soon as he's eligible. The 35-year-old is batting just .167/.211/.222 in 10 games this season with the Marlins.

Thu May 2 201321:31Matt Diaz will play against lefties
Marlins manager Mike Redmond plans to give Matt Diaz playing time in left field and at first base against left-handed pitching.
Diaz hasn't been nearly as good against southpaws in recent seasons, but the Marlins don't have many options. He's never started a game at first base in the majors but has played there recently at Triple-A. Diaz might be worth an add in deep NL-only leagues.

Marlins recalled OF Matt Diaz from Triple-A New Orleans.
Diaz batted just .222/.280/.333 with two home runs and 13 RBI in 118 plate appearances last season for the Braves. He is doubtful to make a big impact in Miami.

Mon Mar 25 201321:06Matt Diaz inks minor league deal with Marlins
Marlins signed OF Matt Diaz to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.
Diaz was released by the Yankees last week, but it didn't take him long to find a job. Though he hasn't fared as well against them in recent seasons, Diaz is a career .324/.364/.498 hitter against left-hander pitching and could eventually wind up in a platoon with Juan Pierre in left field.

Sun Mar 17 201309:53Yankees reassign Matt Diaz to minors camp
Yankees reassigned OF Matt Diaz to minor league camp.
The writing was on the wall following the additions of Ben Francisco and Brennan Boesch. Diaz, 35, batted just .192/.250/.192 with no extra-base hits in Grapefruit League play to seal his fate. The veteran outfielder has the option of opting out of his contract, and it wouldn't be a surprise if he wound up taking it.

Wed Dec 26 201218:08Matt Diaz inks minor league deal with Yankees
Mark Feinsand of the New York Daily News reports that the Yankees have signed Matt Diaz to a minor league contract.
He's been given an invitation to spring training and will stand a good chance at earning an Opening Day roster spot as a platoon mate with Ichiro Suzuki in right field. Diaz was limited to 51 games in 2012 and is coming off thumb surgery, but he's a career .324/.364/.498 hitter against left-handed pitching. It could wind up being a nice little risk-free signing for the Bombers.

Sun Dec 23 201223:59Yankees could have interest in OF Matt Diaz
Mark Feinsand of the New York Daily News speculates that Matt Diaz could be a potential fit for the Yankees.
The Yankees are targeting a right-handed outfielder to platoon with Ichiro Suzuki, and could have an interest in Diaz, who has a career .324/.364/.498 bating line against left-handed pitching. After being limited to 51 games in 2012, Diaz claims to be completely recovered from August thumb surgery. He seems likely to settle for a one-year deal this offseason.

Tue Aug 14 201200:32Matt Diaz to undergo thumb surgery
Matt Diaz has opted to undergo surgery on his right thumb Wednesday, which is expected to end his season.
Diaz made the decision Monday after he failed to make progress with rest and antibiotics. He's expected to need around two months until he can even swing the bat at full speed, so he's all but finished for 2012. The 34-year-old is due to hit free agency this offseason.

Fri Aug 3 201208:49Matt Diaz could need thumb surgery
Matt Diaz was fit for a new cast Thursday and will be examined again by hand specialist Dr. Gary Lourie on Monday.
Diaz would like to avoid season-ending surgery on the thumb, but it's possible that might end up being the course of action. He received a second opinion on the thumb recently from Dr. Thomas Graham in Cleveland. "He agreed with his assessment in the fact that if it doesn't calm down on its own there's no sense in waiting around months to go ahead and get (surgery)," Diaz said. "We should know something in the next week."

Sat Jul 21 201211:12Diaz dealing with recurring thumb issue
Matt Diaz underwent an MRI on Saturday that revealed bone chips in his injured right thumb.
The injury is apparently a recurring thumb issue from two years ago. Diaz is going to try to avoid surgery, but this is obviously a serious concern. He won't be activated from the disabled list when first eligible, and his return to the Braves isn't considered imminent. If he opts for surgery, he would miss the remainder of the season.

Wed Aug 31 201111:35Braves reacquire outfielder Matt Diaz
Braves acquired OF Matt Diaz and cash considerations from the Pirates for a player to be named later.
Of course, Diaz previously played with the Braves from 2006-2010. The 33-year-old outfielder has a .330/.369/.512 batting line and an .881 OPS against left-handed pitching during his career and should be a useful righty bat off the bench for Fredi Gonzalez. Diaz signed a two-year, $4.25 million contract over the winter, so he is still owed $2 million in 2012.

Wed Apr 13 201122:03Diaz picks up two of Bucs' four hits
Matt Diaz picked up two of the Pirates' four hits in their shutout loss to the Brewers on Wednesday.
The Pirates could get nothing going against Shaun Marcum in their worst offensive effort of the young 2011 season. The two-hit night was Diaz's second in three games, but platooning with Garrett Jones in right field, he has no mixed-league value.

Sat Apr 2 201110:04Matt Diaz won't play only against lefties
Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said Matt Diaz and Garrett Jones won't be in a strict platoon in right field.
"Diaz is not going to just play against left-handed pitching," Hurdle said. "We have six right-handers right out of the chute [in the first six games]. He will play a game here [in Chicago] and will probably play a game in St. Louis." We wouldn't expect Hurdle to sit Diaz for a week straight to start off the season, but the fact remains that he will get most of his at-bats against southpaws, and that's the way it should be given his .334 career average against them (as compared to a .269 mark against right-handers).

Wed Dec 8 201009:05Diaz to make $4.25 million from Pirates
Jenifer Langosch of MLB.com hears that Matt Diaz will make "approximately" $4.25 million in his new two-year contract with the Pirates.
Diaz, who made $2.55 million this past season, was non-tendered by the Braves last week. He has a reputation as a lefty-killer, but it's not clear if the Pirates intend to use him as a regular or as part of a platoon.

Tue Dec 7 201020:34Diaz turns down offer from D-Backs
Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports that Matt Diaz turned down an offer from the Diamondbacks and is expected to sign elsewhere.
Diaz, 32, is a popular man after being non-tendered by the Braves last week. He has drawn interest from several teams, including the Yankees, Red Sox, Royals, Dodgers, Mariners and Blue Jays and is expected to sign with a new team relatively soon.
