Fri Feb 9 201803:13Baseball players turn to football-style training
LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (AP) — Carrying their bats and gloves, they leave the weight room and walk the palm tree-lined path past the baseball diamonds to the track.Weight sleds and tires await the boys of summer for the kind of workouts typically reserved for men who make their living on the gridiron in the fall. At the Coach Tom Shaw Performance camp at Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex, it's common to see Carlos Gonzalez, Martin Prado, Ender Inciarte and several other major leaguers working out alongside football players preparing for the NFL combine and doing the same kind of drills.Players believe these nontraditional winter workouts, a mix of strength- and endurance-training, football cutting drills and some more common baseball moves, make them quicker, more prepared for spring training and better equipped to stay healthy for the 162-game season."Quickness, footwork, all the stuff you use in baseball he perfectly adapted to our workouts," said Prado, an infielder for the Miami... Thu Jun 18 201522:03Schafer released by Twins on Thursday
Schafer was released by the Twins on Thursday.
Schafer batted .217 with 23 strikeouts in 69 at-bats with the Twins this season prior to landing on the 15-day disabled list in mid-May due to an MCL sprain. The speedy outfielder has had marginal success against right-handed pitchers in the past (.242/.323/.238) but Minnesota still decided to continue its youth movement. Schafer will likely have to settle for a minor league deal if he is to sign anywhere this season.
Sat Jun 6 201514:15Schafer (knee) caught some fly balls this weekend
Schafer (knee) caught some fly balls this weekend, but is still a ways away from returning, the Star Tribune's LaVelle Neal reports.
It seems like his MCL strain is improving very slowly, and catching fly balls is a far cry from more advanced baseball activities. Consider him out indefinitely. Aaron Hicks should continue to get most of the starts in center field in the short term.

Schafer indicated Monday that his right MCL strain hasn't improved much, and he's still resting without a timetable to resume baseball activities, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports.
Schafer's recovery seems to be at a standstill, with no indication of when he'll start his rehab process. At this point, an early June return seems unlikely, but his timetable should become clearer once he begins taking part in baseball activities.
Sat May 23 201511:13Schafer had second opinion from Dr
Schafer had a second opinion from Dr. James Andrews that confirms he doesn't need surgery on the injured MCL in his knee, the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports.
While this is a positive development, it's probably not a good sign that he sought a second opinion. There's no official timetable for his return, but this makes it sound like it will be several weeks before he's ready.
Sat May 16 201511:36Schafer placed on 15-day DL Saturday with right knee injury
Schafer was placed on the 15-day DL Saturday with a right knee injury, Fox Sports North's Tyler Mason reports.
He apparently tweaked the knee last month in Seattle and has been trying to battle through, but will now get a chance to rest for a stretch. Surgery is not needed at this point but he should be considered out indefinitely. Shane Robinson was activated from the family emergency list as a corresponding move.
Fri May 15 201516:52Schafer not in lineup Friday against Rays
Schafer is not in the lineup Friday against the Rays, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports.
Schafer will sit for a fourth straight game and for the second straight game against an opposing right-handed starter. It would seem Aaron Hicks has supplanted Schafter, who has a .511 OPS in 74 plate appearances, as the primary option in center field.
Wed May 13 201516:11Schafer out of lineup Wednesday against Tigers
Schafer is out of the lineup Wednesday against the Tigers, Phil Miller of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.
Schafer will receive another day off Wednesday with the left-handed Kyle Lobstein on the mound for the Tigers. The day off marks his fourth in the past seven games, and it's a trend that may continue given his .217/.250/.261 batting line this season.
Thu May 7 201511:17Schafer out of lineup Thursday
Schafer is out of the lineup Thursday, the Star Tribune's LaVelle Neal reports.
Schafer is batting a very empty .237 and he's getting on base at just a .274 clip, so he's not doing himself any favors at the plate. A popular late-round flier for steals this year, his inconsistent playing time and lack of success on the base paths makes cutting ties an easy proposition in shallower leagues.
Wed May 6 201516:23Schafer not in lineup Wednesday against Athletics
Schafer is not in the lineup Wednesday against the Athletics, Brandon Warne of 105 The Ticket reports.
Schafer has been swinging well as he's collected five hits in his last three games, but he'll get the day off after starting each of the previous four days. Shane Robinson will get the start in center field in his stead.
Sun May 3 201511:48Schafer out of lineup Sunday against White Sox
Schafer is out of the lineup Sunday against the White Sox, Tyler Mason of Fox Sports North reports.
Schafer missed back-to-back contests with what was being called a sprained MCL earlier in the week, but was able to return to the lineup for Saturday's contest. He was 0-for-3 at the plate with a walk and a run scored in that game, but the Twins will likely give him regular rest until he's closer to 100 percent.
Sat May 2 201511:20Jordan Schafer: (Knee) Back In The Lineup
Schafer (knee) is back in the lineup Saturday against the White Sox, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.
Initial reports suggested Schafer sprained the MCL in his right knee Wednesday, but the outfielder said he was fine and it turns out the injury will end up costing him just two games. Schafer is batting just .188/.204/.229 so far this season, and he's been caught on both of his stolen base attempts to this point.
Fri May 1 201516:37Schafer (knee) remains out of lineup Friday against White Sox
Schafer (knee) remains out of the lineup Friday against the White Sox, Mike Berardino of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports.
Schafer's reportedly sprained his MCL when he slipped at first base during Wednesday's game, and it looks as though his absence will extend to at least two contests. The 12-run output by the Twins on Thursday likely made the decision easier as well, as the team will trot out the same defensive alignment Friday.

Schafer (knee) is not in the lineup for Thursday's game against the White Sox, Mike Berardino of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports.
It was initially reported that Schafer suffered a sprained MCL, but the outfielder then said that his knee is fine. The Twins will have him undergo additional testing, with Shane Robinson manning center field in the meantime. This isn't a bad game for Schafer to miss, given that the Twins are facing an elite southpaw in Chicago's Chris Sale.
