Thurston signed a minor league contract with the Red Sox on Friday, Matt Eddy of Baseball America reports.
Thurston spent the last two seasons in the Atlantic and Mexican leagues, but looks to provide some organizational depth for the Red Sox in 2015. He last surfaced in the majors in 2011, playing in one game with the Marlins.

Thurston, 34, failed to catch on with a major league organization last season, splitting time between the Atlantic League and the Mexican League. His bat showed some signs of life against the lesser competition, batting a combined .297/.390/.422 in 2013, but he'll be nothing more than an organizational player for the Brewers.

He'll receive an invite to spring training. The 32-year-old had a terrific year at Triple-A New Orleans this season, batting .300/.388/.475 in 526 plate appearances. Thurston was up with the Marlins for just one game, going 1-for-4 with a single while starting at second base. He's hit .226 /.305/.323 in 384 major league plate appearances spread over seven seasons, most of which came with the Cardinals in 2008. Thurston will battle for a utility job in camp.
