Thurston signed a minor league contract with the Red Sox on Friday, Matt Eddy of Baseball America reports.

Thurston spent the last two seasons in the Atlantic and Mexican leagues, but looks to provide some organizational depth for the Red Sox in 2015. He last surfaced in the majors in 2011, playing in one game with the Marlins.

Thurston, 34, failed to catch on with a major league organization last season, splitting time between the Atlantic League and the Mexican League. His last MLB appearance came with the Marlins in 2011. Thurston cleared waivers after being designated for assignment by the Marlins over the weekend. He went 1-for-4 with a single in his only game with the big club last Friday. The 31-year-old returns to a .315/.401/.477 batting line at the Triple-A level.
