In addition to holding up well in coverage, he provided career-high marks in tackles (87), interceptions (five) and passes defensed (11), adding a pair of forced fumbles and a pair of fumble recoveries. Statistics don't usually tell the true story for safeties, but Adams really is an impressive player.

Adams may be the leading candidate to start at strong safety with Delano Howell's status for the regular season in doubt due to neck injury, ESPN reports.
Adams is competing with Sergio Brown and Colt Anderson for the starting job, but Adams has the most experience with 73 career starts at safety. It's also possible the Colts could acquire a veteran late in training camp to add to the mix.
Sat Jul 5 201420:08Mike Adams has early lead for free safety job
Mike Adams has the early edge for the Colts' free safety job.
Delano Howell entered OTAs as the favorite to replace Antoine Bethea, but beat reporter Mike Wells now considers Adams the leading candidate. A ten-year veteran, Adams was an every-down player for Denver from Week 12 on last season. If he wins the starting job over Howell, SS LaRon Landry could be asked to play more deep coverage. The Colts' secondary is a 2014 concern.

Wed Jun 11 201409:02Mike Adams still wants to play ball
Free agent S Mike Adams said he's anxious about getting a job for this season.
Adams, now 33, was an every-down player for the Broncos from Week 12 on last season. "I can't fathom me going out like this," he said. "I can't imagine losing a big game and not even having another opportunity to step on the field. That's why the anxiety is picking up with me." Adams is not expected to get another chance with the Broncos with Rahim Moore healthy and T.J. Ward in town. His career is on thin ice.

Tue May 8 201221:16Steelers ink second-rounder LT Adams
Steelers agreed to terms with No. 56 overall pick OT Mike Adams on a four-year contract.
Adams is the fourth Steelers' draft pick to sign. Coach Mike Tomlin has hinted Adams will be given an opportunity to earn the team's starting left tackle job. Adams has ideal blindside size at 6-foot-7, 323 pounds, but questions about his strength and quickness led many draftniks to peg him as a right tackle. Adams will compete with Marcus Gilbert at a position that was a source of great frustration for the Steelers in 2011.

Sun May 6 201214:51Mike Adams practicing at left tackle only
Steelers coach Mike Tomlin confirmed that second-round pick Mike Adams will practice exclusively at left tackle this offseason.
Some draftniks pegged Adams as a future right tackle, but he was strictly a left tackle at Ohio State and will begin his Pittsburgh career there. If Adams has a good spring and summer, he could open the season as Ben Roethlisberger's blind side protector with Marcus Gilbert staying at right tackle and Willie Colon kicking to left guard. David DeCastro will be the right guard.

Fri Apr 27 201220:46Steelers select OSU OT Mike Adams in 2nd
Steelers selected Ohio State OT Mike Adams with the No. 56 overall pick in the 2012 NFL draft.
A very different prospect than first-round pick David DeCastro, Adams has had a difficult postseason. First, he had an inconsistent Senior Bowl performance after a similar career at Ohio State. Then Adams only completed 19 bench press reps at the Combine and tested positive for marijuana. There is no doubting Adams possesses an ideal tackle build, but his reaction quickness and strength are lacking. The Steelers have a future starter on their hands if they set him straight.

Thu Apr 19 201211:41Ohio State OT Adams failed Combine drug test
NFL Network's Jason La Canfora reports that Ohio State OT Mike Adams tested positive for marijuana at the NFL Combine.
These leaks happen every year. While they sometimes don't torpedo draft stock, it's another red flag for Adams -- a player who already struggles on game tape. We wouldn't expect him to be drafted in the first round. Per La Canfora, Adams has been "upfront" with teams about the drug test, and he has already completed a counseling program. Look for Adams to be a mid-second-round pick.
