Cofield became a free agent after being outrighted off the White Sox 40-man roster last month. The Pirates also inked right-hander Jose Diaz and infielder Stefan Welch to minor league contracts. However, none of the three will receive invites to spring training.

Cofield was selected in the eighth round of the 2005 MLB Amateur Draft and has compiled a 4.12 ERA and 1.49 WHIP over the past six minor league seasons. He has yet to reach the Triple-A level and won't be much more than a middle or long reliever once he does finally reach the big leagues.

According to Jon Paul Morosi of FOXSports.com, the White Sox have acquired Kyle Cofield in a trade from the Braves.
Sounds like a minor move designed to clear a spot on Atlanta's 40-man roster. Cofield, 24 in January, turned in a 4.39 ERA and 1.46 WHIP over 55 1/3 innings this past season at the Double-A level and has not yet reached Triple-A ball. He projects as nothing more than a middle reliever.
