LHP Eric O'Flaherty was released. He had pitched to a 7.85 ERA in 22 games, failing to earn a decision.

LHP Eric O'Flaherty was placed on 10-day disabled list Sunday because of rotator cuff tendonitis in his left shoulder. He gave up six hits and four runs in 1 2/3 innings Saturday, pushing his ERA to 7.85 over 18 1/3 innings in 22 relief appearances. O'Flaherty was on the DL from May 20-June 2 because of a lower back strain.

LHP Eric O'Flaherty also was reinstated from the DL on Friday, giving manager Brian Snitker the luxury of three left-handers in his bullpen.

LHP Eric O'Flaherty, who struggled to an 8.10 ERA in a combined 30 innings with the Oakland Athletics and New York Mets last season in his first year back from Tommy John surgery, has an open path to the job as the second left-hander in the bullpen after being signed to a minor league contract earlier last week. The 31-year-old had a 1.99 ERA in a five-season span, covering 249 1/3 innings, with the Atlanta Braves from 2009-13. The Pirates love sinkerball pitchers and O'Flaherty has induced groundballs at a 58.3 percent rate during his 10-year career.

O'Flaherty, 31, went a combined 1-2 with an 8.10 ERA in 41 relief appearances for the A's and the Mets in 2015. He enjoyed effective seasons with the Braves from 2009-13 before undergoing Tommy John surgery.

O'Flaherty gave up a solo home run to Jose Reyes on Saturday.

O'Flaherty entered the game with the score 14-7 and promptly was greeted with the longball. Hitters batting righty are 25-for-67 against O'Flaherty, which pretty much shows he should only be a lefty specialist. with Dario Alvarez up, O'Flaherty could be in a battle to keep his roster and bullpen spot.
