Fri Nov 2 201819:12Braves decline to make qualifying offers, including Markakis
ATLANTA (AP) — The Braves did not extend a qualifying offer to any of their free agents, including cleanup hitter Nick Markakis. If Atlanta had made $17.9 million, one-year offer to Markakis by Friday's deadline, it would have been in line to receive a draft pick if he signed elsewhere. But the team opted against such a move, not wanting to give the outfielder — who turns 35 this month — the option of taking such a lucrative deal. While Markakis was a first-time All-Star who hit .297 with 14 homers and 93 RBIs, his production tailed off in the second half of the season. The Braves also opted against qualifying offers to catcher Kurt Suzuki, starting pitcher Anibal Sanchez, starter Brandon McCarthy, infielder Ryan Flaherty and reliever Peter Moylan. McCarthy has said he plans to retire.___For more AP baseball coverage: https://apnews.com/apf-Baseball and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports
Thu Aug 16 201820:50Intentional plunkings come under fire after Urena hits Acuna
NEW YORK (AP) — Aaron Judge saw Jose Urena's plunking of Ronald Acuna Jr. before the Yankees played a day game Thursday, and he felt Acuna's pain. The reigning AL home run leader knows that with so many big flies comes a risk that some disgruntled pitcher may try burying a fastball in your ribs."Oh yeah, it's happened before," New York's star slugger said.Throwing at a batter for hitting home runs? That's what many think Urena did, including Mets broadcaster and former big league first baseman Keith Hernandez, who defended Urena's plunking of Atlanta's breakout rookie. Mostly, though, players and coaches around the game seem to want nothing to do with this murky unwritten rule. The Miami right-hander sparked a benches-clearing fracas in Atlanta when he drilled Acuna in the elbow with the first pitch of a game Wednesday. Acuna had homered leading off three consecutive games and gone deep four times in the first three games of the series against the Marlins.Acuna had a CT scan that revealed... [More]

Sun Apr 15 201818:19No Game Today: Wintry weather, plenty of MLB postponements
CHICAGO (AP) — April showers — and snow, sleet and wind — are wreaking havoc on major league baseball. No Ohtani in Kansas City. No Judge in Detroit. One less off day for a couple more teams this summer.Six more games were wiped out Sunday, running baseball's total number of postponements to 21 just 2 1/2 weeks into the season. It's baseball's highest number through the end of April since it had 26 in 2007, and there are still a couple weeks to go this month. The last time six games were wiped out in a single day was Sept. 12, 2008, and that situation was partly caused by Hurricane Ike battering the Gulf Coast. There was more dicey weather in the forecast for Monday, and Boston postponed its annual Patriots' Day game for the first time since 1984."If it was up to me, no one would play north of Atlanta or east of Colorado in the first few weeks, but that's not going to happen," Braves reliever Peter Moylan said.Angels sensation Shohei Ohtani was slated to pitch for the third time before their...
