Rice hopes to resume his NFL playing career, ESPN.com reports.

ESPN.com further notes that some teams have privately discussed the possibility of bringing in Rice, but to date, there is nothing imminent on that front. Rice has not played since his contract was terminated by the Ravens after a video of him punching his then-fiancee Janay Palmer surfaced. The running back, who turned 28 in January, last saw regular season action with Baltimore in 2013, carrying 214 times for 660 yards, for an average of 3.1 yards per carry.

Rice probably isn't on the Cowboys' radar, ESPN.com reports.

The Cowboys are a high-profile team with uncertainty at running back, and Rice is arguably the best-known unsigned player at the position. For that reason, the two parties may be connected in rumors, but it's highly unlikely the Cowboys would be willing to take the associated PR hit, especially after previously signing DE Greg Hardy. While Hardy was a Pro Bowl-caliber pass rusher when last on the field, Rice appeared to be completely washed up in 2013. It's increasingly unclear if the 28-year-old Rice will even have the chance to compete for an NFL roster spot.

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, at least four teams have expressed interest in Rice, who was reinstated by the NFL earlier this week.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport echoes that notion, indicating that a "handful of teams have expressed interest" in the running back. That said, while Rice is reportedly in good shape and ready to play, both reports suggest that it will be difficult for the running back to catch on with a team this season.

After winning an appeal of his indefinite suspension, Rice has been reinstated to the NFL, according to ESPN.com.

Rice, who had been suspended indefinitely for violating the league's personal conduct policy, is thus eligible to sign with any NFL team, after having been released by the Ravens on Sept. 8.

Given the unprecedented nature of this type of appeal, it's uncertain how things may play out here. In any case, it would still seem unlikely that Rice would end up playing this season, given the PR nightmare his signing would almost certainly create.

If he sits out that contest, his next game action won't come until Sept. 21 against the Browns, given that Rice will be under suspension for the first two games of the upcoming regular season.

Rice looked smaller and quicker than he did last season, but he also ceded some of the first-team work to Bernard Pierce, who scored from two yards out on the Ravens' opening drive. Rice was done for the day after that opening drive, while Pierce stayed in to register 10 carries for 37 yards and a touchdown. Pierce is clearly the favorite to start Week 1, but Rice figures to be right back in the mix once his suspension is served. For those who can afford to wait two weeks and are willing to accept significant risk, Rice is an intriguing option once the top running backs are gone.

Per beat writer Mike Preston, Rice had two long runs over the weekend where he "looked like the Rice of old," and "his cuts were excellent." It's hard to get overly bullish about Rice following a miserable 2013 campaign and now entering 2014 on suspension, but he'll be someone to track closely this preseason.
