Tue Apr 30 201322:59Diamondbacks sign Juan Rivera
Diamondbacks signed OF/1B Juan Rivera to a minor league contract.
It took Rivera a month to find a job after being released by the Yankees. The veteran will go to extended spring training for 7-10 days before heading to Triple-A Reno. He'll be an option for the D'Backs bench eventually.

Thu Mar 28 201315:31Yanks release veteran outfielder Juan Rivera
Yankees released OF-1B Juan Rivera.
This opens things up at first base for Lyle Overbay, who will get the majority of starts until Mark Teixeira returns in late May or early June from his wrist injury. Rivera batted .244/.286/.375 with nine home runs and 47 RBI in 109 games last season for the Dodgers.

Mon Mar 11 201311:48Juan Rivera to get longer look at 1B
The Yankees plan to give Juan Rivera a longer look at first base.
General manager Brian Cashman said last week that he views Rivera as "more of an outfielder" than a first baseman, but the club is obviously not dismissing the idea of using the 34-year-old at first. Rivera started at first base Sunday and went 3-for-4 with a double and three RBI.

Sun Mar 10 201316:43Juan Rivera knocks in three runs
Juan Rivera went 3-for-4 and doubled in all three Yankees runs Sunday against the Blue Jays.
The Yankees see Rivera as more of a left fielder than a first baseman, which works out OK since both spots are open right now. It'd be a big surprise if he isn't in the starting lineup come Opening Day, and he should have a little value in AL-only leagues early on.

Wed Mar 6 201321:48Yankees don't view Juan Rivera as 1B
Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said he views Juan Rivera as "more of an outfielder" than a first baseman.
"I don't look at him as a first baseman," Cashman said. "I know he played first with the Dodgers, but in fairness, we have to evaluate everything. If I have our people tell me it's a logical, legitimate one to look at, then I'll be comfortable looking at it. I haven't heard that yet and I haven't asked anybody." The comment would seem to indicate that Rivera will mostly see time filling in for Curtis Granderson, rather than Mark Teixeira. Dan Johnson and Kevin Youkilis are the club's main in-house options to fill in at first.

Fri Mar 1 201316:27Juan Rivera goes 2-for-3 for Yankees
Juan Rivera went 2-for-3 with a double on Friday and is 6-for-13 so far this spring.
Rivera has to be considered the favorite to start in left field on Opening Day with Curtis Granderson out of the Yankees lineup. He probably won't be of any use in AL-only leagues for the long haul, but it might be worth a couple of bucks to get his April stats.

Yankees signed OF/1B Juan Rivera to a minor league contract.
The deal includes a spring training invite, where he'll compete with the likes of Matt Diaz and Russ Canzler for a gig as a right-handed hitting outfielder. Rivera originally signed by the Yankees back in 1996 and played his first three seasons in the majors with the club. Now 34 years old, he batted just .244/.286/.375 with nine home runs and a .661 OPS in 91 games with the Dodgers last season while splitting time between left field and first base.

Juan Rivera delivered a game-winning single in the bottom of the ninth as the Dodgers came back to beat the Cardinals 4-3 on Saturday.
Luis Cruz delivered a game-tying double over the head of center fielder Jon Jay with two outs in the ninth. The Dodgers then sent up Rivera to pinch-hit for A.J. Ellis. Wed Jun 13 201201:09Rivera's 3-run homer pushes Dodgers to win
Juan Rivera cranked a game-winning three-run homer in the eighth inning Tuesday against the Angels.
Rivera took advantage of Angels manager Mike Scioscia's slow trigger-finger and Jerome Williams' fatigue in clearing the bases in a 2-2 game. Overall, Rivera was 2-for-4. Because of his inconsistent playing time, Rivera is only useful in NL-only leagues.

Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said the outfielder was "sore" and "tentative" Wednesday in his first rehab game with High-A Rancho Cucamonga. Thu May 31 201222:47Rivera (hamstring) may not be ready Friday
Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said that Juan Rivera (hamstring) sounded a little sore after playing his latest rehab game with High-A Rancho Cucamonga on Wednesday.
It was previously thought that Rivera would return from the disabled list Friday, but Mattingly isn't so sure, especially after Matt Kemp's recent setback. "We're not going to say he's coming to Colorado and ready to go first day," said Mattingly. "We need to be patient with Juan and make sure we are as sure as we can that he is ready to go."
