Sat Jan 4 201412:55Padres sign Brandon Wood to minors deal
Padres signed 3B Brandon Wood to a minor league contract.
The deal does not include an invitation to major league spring training. The 28-year-old former top prospect hasn't appeared in a major league game since he was a member of the Pirates in 2011. He's coming off a disappointing minor league campaign where he slashed .226/.262/.329 with four homers and 30 RBI in 65 games.

Orioles acquired 3B Brandon Wood from the Royals for cash considerations; assigned him to Triple-A Norfolk.
The former top prospect was batting just .264/.304/.396 in 56 plate appearances this year for the Royals' Triple-A affiliate in Omaha, Nebraska. Wood hasn't appeared in a major league game since the 2011 campaign and seems unlikely to make it back with the Orioles.

Sat Feb 23 201317:43Wood hits walk-off homer in Royals' win
Brandon Wood hit a walk-off two-run homer Saturday to give the Royals a 4-2 win over the Rangers.
Has Wood finally arrived? Probably not. But a strong spring could earn him a bench role for the Royals. Baseball America's No. 3 prospect in 2006, Wood has struggled to turn talent into results at the major league level. He owns a .186 average in 700 major league at-bats since 2007.

Royals signed INF Brandon Wood.
Wood, who turns 28 in March, batted .259/.313/.409 with 10 home runs and a .722 OPS in 119 games with the Rockies' Triple-A affiliate this season. The former top prospect is nothing more than minor league depth at this point.

Tue Nov 6 201211:45Brandon Wood elects free agency
Brandon Wood has elected free agency.
The former first round pick disappointed in the strong offensive environment of the PCL, hitting .259/.313/.409 with 10 homers and 64 RBI in 119 games for Triple-A Colorado Springs. He did show versatility, playing five different positions, and should be able to find another organization willing to give him a shot.

Sun Mar 11 201212:33Brandon Wood 'making a statement'
Rockies manager Jim Tracy said Brandon Wood is "making a statement" in an effort to win a roster spot.
Wood finished a homer short of the cycle against the Royals on Saturday and has also impressed the Rockies with his versatility in the field, playing third and second base, shortstop and even some left field. "He's making a statement," Tracy said. "Back in December we brought him to Denver because there were things with his swing that needed attention. Where it was at, it wasn't going to work... He's worked extremely hard, and he's taking very competitive at-bats right now." If veteran Casey Blake fails to impress and Nolan Arenado begins the year in the minors, Wood could see some playing time at third base.

Rockies signed INF Brandon Wood to a minor league contract.
Wood was outrighted off the Pirates' 40-man roster at the end of the regular season after batting just .220/.277/.347 with seven home runs and 31 RBI in 257 plate appearances for Pittsburgh. The former top prospect is unlikely to suddenly flourish out in Colorado.

Mon Oct 31 201116:04Pirates send INF Wood outright to minors
Pirates sent INF Brandon Wood outright to Triple-A Indianapolis.
He can become a free agent. Wood did little after being claimed off waivers from the Angels in late-April, batting .220/.277/.347 with seven homers and 31 RBI over 257 plate appearances. The 26-year-old former top prospect now has a pathetic .513 OPS over 751 plate appearances in the major leagues.

Thu Jun 30 201121:52Brandon Wood hits one over the boards
Brandon Wood took Brett Cecil deep for a two-run homer in the Pirates' win over the Blue Jays Thursday.
It was the only hit in four trips to the plate for Wood, who was starting in the DH slot. Wood is batting just .228 over 114 at-bats since joining the Pirates, but he has been pretty decent in June, hitting .278 with three dingers.

Fri May 20 201109:07Brandon Wood still struggling
Brandon Wood is batting just .225 with a .295 on-base percentage through his first 45 plate appearances for the Pirates.
Huge improvements on his .173 and .205 respective career marks, but still numbers more befitting of a slightly above-average hitting pitcher than major-league shortstop. He last homered on September 17 of last season, and is now firmly entrenched behind Ronny Cedeno on the Pirates' depth chart. Wood's disappointing career is running out of time for a renaissance.

Fri Apr 29 201111:01Brandon Wood hasn't taken over at SS yet
Pirates managed Clint Hurdle said Brandon Wood hasn't passed Ronny Cedeno on the depth chart yet even though he's started three straight games at shortstop.
"He's played three games," Hurdle said of Wood. "I'm just riding the little hotter hand. My job is to get everything I can out of every player on that roster. I, by no means, am finished trying to get the best I can out of Ronny Cedeno. By no means finished. Right now, I'm riding the hot hand. [Wood]. What I've heard, he's dependable, so we're going to get a better look while we're at home. And when we go on the road, Ronny is going to get some more games." Wood has just one hit in seven at-bats in the three games, though he also had a two-RBI double in a start at third base prior to that. The Pirates have nothing to lose by giving the former heralded prospect a shot.

Mon Apr 25 201114:25Wood to start at 3B for Pirates Monday night
Brandon Wood is starting at third base for the Pirates on Monday night against the Nationals.
The Bus picked Wood up off waivers from the Angels last week and are hoping that a change of scenery might help his talent finally shine. The 26-year-old should get looks all around the Pittsburgh infield. He had five 20-plus homer seasons in the minor leagues and even hit 43 in 2005.

Fri Apr 22 201115:29Bucs plan to play Wood all over the infield
Pirates manager Clint Hurdle plans to play the recently acquired Brandon Wood at all four infield positions.
Wood has thus far been completely inept at the plate in the major leagues, but has been a versatile defender, something that surely went into Pittsburgh's thinking when it claimed him off waivers from the Angels. Defensive specialists don't make for viable fantasy options, however, and even a hitting instructor as respected as Hurdle is going to need a lot of time before he's able to improve Wood's approach at the plate.

Fri Apr 22 201113:13Pirates claim Brandon Wood off waivers
Pirates claimed SS Brandon Wood off waivers from Angels.
As they were expected to do. Once one of the top prospects in all of baseball, Wood has been an utter disaster through parts of five major-league seasons, posting a .168 average and .197 on-base percentage in 494 plate appearances. However, he is still believed to have some potential as a power bat, and certainly has more upside than the man the Pirates are currently starting at shortstop, Ronny Cedeno. Expectations for Wood's time in Pittsburgh should remain extremely low - he's not a player just in need of a "change of scenery" - but if anyone can finally tap his once limitless potential, it's Bucs manager and noted hitting guru Clint Hurdle.

Fri Apr 22 201108:49Pirates ready to claim Brandon Wood
The Pirates will "almost certainly" place a waiver claim on Brandon Wood before Friday's 12:00 ET deadline, according to beat writer Colin Dunlap.
That's what happens when your starting shortstop is Ronny Cedeno. There has been nothing to suggest a change of scenery is all it will take to wake up Wood's long slumbering bat, and even if he's claimed by the Pirates and immediately added to their 25-man roster, he won't be worth a flier in NL-only leagues for the time being.

Thu Apr 21 201109:10Wood has 'zero chance' of clearing waivers
Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports that Brandon Wood has "zero chance" of clearing waivers.
Nightengale reports that Wood is currently drawing interest from a number of teams, including the Pirates. The former first-round pick has a lousy .168 batting average in the big leagues, but has plenty of power potential and is a capable defender at either shortstop or third base. He's still only 26 years old, so somebody will take the chance.

Wed Apr 20 201121:01D'Backs not interested in Brandon Wood
Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic doubts the Diamondbacks would have any interest in Brandon Wood.
Piecoro reasons that the D'Backs don't have any room on the 25-man roster. They probably wouldn't have any trouble clearing some, but it appears that they can likely be scratched off as potential suitors for the underperforming Angel. The Orioles are also a team that have been unofficially ruled out as a destination for Wood.

Wed Apr 20 201111:37O's unlikely to have interest in Brandon Wood
According to Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com, the Orioles are "not likely" to have interest in Brandon Wood.
Wood was designated for assignment by the Angels on Tuesday and should draw some interest on the waiver wire, despite his .168/.197/.259 batting line in the big leagues. The Orioles might not be a fit, but he could make some sense for teams like the Astros, Pirates, Mariners and Dodgers.
