Wed Oct 3 201209:56John Beck let go by Texans
Texans released QB John Beck.
The Texans needed Beck's roster spot so they could secure some secondary depth in the form of Troy Nolan. They'll roll with only T.J. Yates behind starter Matt Schaub for now. They also have rookie Case Keenum on the practice squad.

Sun Sep 23 201214:59John Beck, WR Posey lead Texans inactives
Texans declared QB John Beck, WR DeVier Posey, CB Roc Carmichael, CB Brandon Harris, ILB Tim Dobbins, OT Andrew Gardner and OG Brandon Brooks inactive for Week 3 against the Broncos.
There are no surprise inactives for the Texans, who remain one of the healthiest teams in the league heading into Week 3. A core special teamer, Dobbins is dealing with a hamstring injury. A third-round pick, Posey has been a healthy scratch three straight weeks.

Wed May 9 201218:49John Beck finds another shot with the Texans
Texans agreed to terms with QB John Beck, formerly of the Redskins.
It's an obvious fit because Gary Kubiak's offense is so similar to the Shanahans', but the Texans had better be wary of Beck's cunning. He's an excellent practice player who goes deer-in-headlights when the bullets are live. A (nearly) 31-year-old checkdown machine, Beck appeared in four games last season (three starts), and completed 60.6 percent of his passes with a 6.5 YPA, two touchdowns, and four interceptions. Beck shouldn't be a realistic candidate to unseat T.J. Yates for Matt Schaub's primary backup role.

Sat Apr 28 201217:01Redskins release QB John Beck
Redskins released QB John Beck.
A Mike Shanahan favorite, Beck became expendable when the Redskins drafted Robert Griffin III on Thursday and Kurt Cousins this morning. Now 30 years old, he's probably seen his last NFL start, but could garner some attention as a backup. In four appearances last season, Beck completed 60-of-132 passes for 858 yards with two touchdowns and four interceptions.

Mon Feb 13 201209:55John Beck thinks he'll get another chance
John Beck believes he'll get another opportunity to be a starting quarterback.
"I feel without a doubt I can be a better quarterback," Beck said in a recent radio interview. "And (coach Mike Shanahan said after the season), 'I know you can too, but right now we're in this situation. There'll be another opportunity down the road and you just got to make sure you're ready for it.' So, there's where my mindset is at. I believe there will be another opportunity." We don't share Beck's optimism heading into his age-31 campaign. If Beck gets into a game next season, something will have gone wrong for the Redskins.

Tue Jan 10 201222:39Redskisn likely to go off-roster for '12 QB
Sports Illustrated's Peter King believes "someone not on the roster now" will be the Redskins' starting quarterback in 2012.
Rex Grossman is a free agent, while John Beck is under contract for $1 million in 2012. Facing what is likely a do-or-die season, coach Mike Shanahan will almost certainly take a quarterback with Washington's first-round pick, or make a play for someone like Green Bay's Matt Flynn. Washington has been flimsily connected to both Flynn and Texas A&M QB Ryan Tannehill in recent days.

Wed Dec 28 201114:01Beck will play only if Grossman gets injured
Redskins coach Mike Shanahan confirmed Wednesday that John Beck would play in Week 17 only if Rex Grossman got injured.
"We play to win," said Shanahan. Once the Shanahans' pet project, Beck failed miserably in four appearances (three starts) this year, throwing two touchdown passes compared to five turnovers. Due a $1 million salary in 2012, Beck will likely return as no better than the Redskins' No. 2 quarterback next season.

Sat Nov 12 201110:30Report: Beck, Grossman split first-team reps
"Three people with knowledge of the situation" tell the Washington Post that John Beck and Rex Grossman split first-team snaps in Redskins practice this week.

Mon Nov 7 201110:47Beck failing to challenge downfield
None of John Beck's 47 pass attempts traveled farther than 16 yards in the air in Sunday's loss.
Of Beck's 30 completions, just 11 went for 10 yards or longer. Beck simply isn't capable of challenging downfield, and though coach Mike Shanahan has endorsed him as his starter for at least one more week, it would not be surprising if Rex Grossman finds himself back under center before season's end. Beck is barely even worth stashing as a reserve in two-QB leagues.

Sun Nov 6 201116:27Redskins say they'll stick with Beck at QB
Following Sunday's ugly loss to the 49ers, Redskins coach Mike Shanahan said he will stick with John Beck as his starting quarterback.
In Beck's two starts, the Redskins have scored a total of 11 points. Today, he completed 30-of-47 passes for 254 yards with one touchdown and one interception. However, just like last week, the majority of those yards and completions came when the game was already decided. Beck looks remarkably uncomfortable in the pocket and consistently fails to find the open man. He simply checks down to his backs whenever he can. As a third-string talent, we have no hope that Beck will turn this brutal offense around. If the Redskins had anyone other than Rex Grossman in reserve, Beck's job would be in jeopardy.

Thu Nov 3 201120:18Shanahan blames Beck for high sack total
Redskins OC Kyle Shanahan has put a lot of the blame for John Beck's nine Week 8 sacks on the quarterback.
"We did have quick throws, we just didn't get rid of them," Shanahan said. "John's got to recognize that and get rid of the ball. He can't hold onto it when we're outnumbered ... He's got to learn to get rid of the ball." It's worth noting because Beck had the same problem in five rookie-year starts with the Dolphins.

Sun Oct 30 201119:29John Beck struggles mightily as Skins fall
John Beck completed 20-of-33 passes for 208 yards, no touchdowns, and two interceptions in the Redskins' Week 8 loss to the Bills.
He took an unthinkable nine sacks to lose 56 yards, and all told was hit on 14 occasions. Needless to say, Beck is going to be quite sore on Monday, and a lot of it is on him. Beck's happy feet have returned, and he often looks like a deer in the headlights in the pocket. Someone needs to tell him to get rid of the football when no one is open and the pass rush is closing in. An even uglier performance may be on tape against a far, far better 49ers defense in Week 9.

Mon Oct 24 201117:31Shanahan 'proud' after Beck's first start
Redskins coach Mike Shanahan said Monday that he was "really proud" of John Beck's performance against the Panthers in Week 7.
Beck went 22-of-37 for 217 yards, one touchdown, and an interception, complemented by a short rushing score. "That's what he's got to do," Shanahan said. "He made some plays with his feet, threw on the run, thought he handled himself well in the drop-back situation. Our goal now is to get a supporting cast around him that can play at a very high level." The "goal" just got a lot tougher with Santana Moss (hand) out for the next 5-7 games.

Sun Oct 23 201118:33John Beck shows good mobility
John Beck completed 22-of-37 passes for 279 yards with one touchdown and one interception in Sunday's loss to the Panthers.
The highlight of Beck's performance was his mobility. He consistently extended plays and ended up with three carries for 10 yards with a touchdown. Compared to Rex Grossman, he looked like Steve Young. Despite the loss, Beck certainly played well enough to gain some leash on the starting gig. Still, he'll just be a weak QB2 play in Buffalo next week as he plays without No. 1 receiver Santana Moss (hand). Much of Beck's yardage today came with the Panthers in prevent mode.

Wed Oct 19 201109:10Report: Redskins will start John Beck Sunday
John Beck will be the Redskins' starting quarterback Sunday, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.
As expected. After Rex Grossman's horrific four-interception game last week, coach Mike Shanahan was left with little choice. Beck steps into a dream matchup with a Carolina defense that is giving up 27.2 points per game on the year, fifth-worst in the league. The sad part for the Redskins is that the outlook of their skill players doesn't really change going forward. We can expect the same kind of erratic production from Beck that we got from Grossman.

Mon Oct 17 201116:54Shanahan: Mind not made up on QB yet
Coach Mike Shanahan again refused to tip his hand Monday as to the Redskins' Week 7 starter at quarterback.
The Redskins' veteran receivers are publicly campaigning for Rex Grossman to keep his job, which can't say much for John Beck. "I have not made up my mind right now," Shanahan said. "I believe in both guys. . I know these guys have got what it takes." Beck remains the heavy favorite to start against Carolina after Grossman was benched in Week 6 following four interceptions.

Sun Oct 16 201117:41John Beck comes on for Grossman
In relief of an ineffective Rex Grossman, John Beck completed 8-of-15 passes for 117 yards and ran for a two-yard touchdown in Sunday's loss to the Eagles.
Beck said he doesn't yet know if he will start next week, but it's hard to see the Redskins putting Grossman back in there after today's miserable performance. Beck threw some ugly knuckleballs during his one quarter of action, but completed a 32-yard pass to Terrence Austin and showed good recognition on his touchdown run. Beck now figures to have a chance to run with the job after losing out to Grossman in a training camp battle. He'll only be a meager option as a weak QB2. The talent gap/expected production between the two quarterbacks isn't wide.

Mon Oct 3 201114:43Redskins not ready to change quarterbacks
According to the Washington Post, the Redskins aren't likely to make a quarterback change to John Beck "any time soon."
"If Beck was legitimately better, Mike Shanahan would have gone with him out of the gate," writes beat reporter Mike Jones. The biggest factor working in Rex Grossman's favor is the Redskins' 3-1 record. Since a 305-yard, two-touchdown opener, Grossman has completed just 62-of-109 passes (56.9%) for 684 yards (6.27 YPA), four touchdowns, and five interceptions in three games.
