The Texas Rangers optioned pitching prospect Owen White to Triple-A Round Rock on Monday and activated pitcher Jonathan Hernandez (lat) from the 15-day injured list in a corresponding move. White, the team's No. 9 prospect per MLB Pipeline, was with the Rangers' big-league club for the first time in his career for a few days, but he didn't make a single appearance and will now head back to the minors to continue his development. The 24-year-old has been slowed by injuries early in his career. He pitched in the All-Star Futures game but didn't look too good in the second half of 2023 when he was promoted to Triple-A. White allowed 11 runs (10 earned) in just 12 1/3 innings with seven walks and 11 strikeouts in his first three starts for Round Rock, so he's going to need to turn it around on the farm if he wants another call-up to the big leagues later this year.

The Texas Rangers have optioned right-handed pitching prospect Jack Leiter to Triple-A Round Rock on Friday and called up No. 9 prospect Owen White from Round Rock in a corresponding move. Leiter made his major-league debut on Thursday against the Detroit Tigers and didn't do so well, allowing seven runs on eight hits while walking three and striking out three in 3 2/3 innings. The 23-year-old wasn't fooling many hitters and allowed a lot of hard contact in his first taste of big-league hitters. He'll surely be back at some point in 2024, but for now will head back to the farm to hone his craft. White, 24, gave up five earned runs in four relief innings in his major-league debut in 2023. It's unclear what role the Rangers plan on having him fill in his first call-up of 2024.

Jon Gray was scratched from Tuesday night's start due to a blister injury and with the Rangers using five relievers in their 9-6, 12-inning loss on Monday, they will add White to their bullpen mix on Tuesday. The 23-year-old has spent the season at Double-A where he has turned in a 3.54 ERA alongside a weak 10.8% K-BB% across 11 starts and 53 1/3 innings of work. The Rangers' top pitching prospect worked to a 3.59 ERA across 80 1/3 innings of work between the High-A and Double-A levels in the 2022 campaign.
