Tue Mar 2619:20Randy Vasquez To Start In Minors
The San Diego Padres have optioned right-hander Randy Vasquez to Triple-A El Paso to begin the 2024 regular season. Vasquez was acquired from the New York Yankees over the winter in the blockbuster trade involving outfielder Juan Soto, and he came to San Diego in competition for the final starting rotation spot. However, a poor spring showing (6.23 ERA with five walks and nine strikeouts in 8 2/3 Cactus League innings) sealed his fate. The 25-year-old will begin the year down on the farm, but the Friars will surely need him to make starts at some point at the big-league level this year given SD's questionable rotation depth. Vasquez could become an option for fantasy managers in NL-only leagues this year, but he has a low ceiling in mixed leagues as a streamer.

Sun Feb 412:34Jhony Brito, Randy Vasquez To Enter Camp As Starters
San Diego Padres manager Mike Shildt said that pitchers Jhony Brito and Randy Vasquez will come to spring training as starters behind Joe Musgrove, Yu Darvish and Michael King, with Pedro Avila and Matt Waldron competing for the final spot in the starting rotation. Others to watch include Jairo Iriarte, Jay Groome and Glen Otto. Both Brito and Vasquez were acquired in the blockbuster trade this offseason that sent Juan Soto to the New York Yankees. Brito, 25, looked better in relief in the Bronx in his first MLB season in 2023 and finished with a 4.28 ERA and 1.22 WHIP in 90 1/3 innings. Vasquez, 25, had a strong 2.87 ERA and 1.27 WHIP over just 37 2/3 innings in 11 games (five starts) last year but will be on the fantasy radar in deep NL-only leagues now that it looks like he'll open the season in a starting role in his new digs.

Mon Sep 25 202315:50Randy Vasquez Allows Two Runs In Relief
New York Yankees rookie right-hander Randy Vasquez came on in relief on Sunday in the 7-1 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks and surrendered two earned runs on three hits while walking two and striking out two in 2 1/3 innings after replacing starter Carlos Rodon. For the final week of the regular season, Vasquez is likely to continue coming out of the bullpen with Luke Weaver settling into the fifth spot in the starting rotation. The 24-year-old Dominican has only appeared in 10 games (five starts) for the Yankees in his first major-league season, but he's been decent, posting a 2.91 ERA (5.35 FIP), 1.23 WHIP, 16 walks and 27 strikeouts in 34 innings. However, he's also been pretty fortunate given his 10.7 percent walk rate.

Mon Aug 14 202314:20Randy Vasquez To Start Wednesday Against Braves
New York Yankees rookie right-hander Randy Vasquez is scheduled to start this Wednesday on the road against the Atlanta Braves. Vasquez has only made four appearances in the majors for the Yankees this year, with his most recent outing coming on Aug. 11 in relief against the Miami Marlins. He picked up his second win of the year and allowed two earned runs on three hits while walking one and striking out two in 3 2/3 innings. Given all the injuries to Yankees starting pitchers, there's a real chance the 24-year-old will stick in New York's starting rotation the rest of the season. In his 19 innings pitched in 2023, the Dominican hurler has a nice 1.89 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and 12 strikeouts in four outings (three starts).

Tue Jun 6 202316:30Randy Vasquez Likely to Start Wednesday
New York Yankees rookie right-hander Randy Vasquez is in the team's clubhouse on Tuesday and has a good chance to start on Wednesday against the Chicago White Sox in place of injured left-hander Nestor Cortes (shoulder), who is expected to land on the injured list. In his major-league debut against the San Diego Padres on May 26, Vasquez was hit with a loss when he allowed two runs on four hits (one homer) while walking three and striking out six in 4 2/3 innings of work. The club's No. 12 prospect, per MLB Pipeline, has gone 1-6 with a 5.13 ERA, 1.63 WHIP, 26 walks and 55 strikeouts in 10 starts for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in 2023. The matchup will be a better one for Vasquez in his second MLB start, and his strikeout upside could make him worth streaming consideration in deeper leagues.

Vasquez allowed a pair of runs on four hits to go along with six strikeouts and three walks over 4 2/3 innings. The 24-year-old will get another chance with the big league club later this season and is a firm hold in dynasty leagues.

Thu May 25 202315:42Randy Vasquez To Start For Yankees On Friday
New York Yankees rookie right-hander Randy Vasquez is with the team on Thursday and said the plan is for him to make his first major-league start on Friday in the Bronx against the visiting San Diego Padres. The team's No. 12 prospect, per MLB Pipeline, has gone 1-5 with a 4.85 ERA, 1.57 WHIP, 23 walks and 50 strikeouts in 42 2/3 innings over nine starts for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre so far in 2023. The 24-year-old has a nasty curveball and gets plenty of swings and misses, but we wouldn't advise fantasy managers to roll with him as a streamer, even though the Padres will likely be without star third baseman Manny Machado (hand) again on Friday. Control issues have raised concerns about whether Vasquez can remain in a starting role long-term in the big leagues.
