Tue Apr 30 201900:06Cano's MRI shows no break in hand, but swelling remains
NEW YORK (AP) — Robinson Canó felt comforted. So did Mets manager Mickey Callaway.New York's second baseman likely will miss a couple of games with a swollen left hand, yet he was happy an MRI taken Monday was negative. Canó was hit on the outside of his hand by a pitch from Milwaukee left-hander Gio González in the first inning of Sunday's 5-2 win."Big exhale," Callaway said before New York's 5-4 loss to Cincinnati. "You hold your breath for a minute about these kind of things, and maybe for 12 hours, while you figure out what's going on."Canó's hand was swollen about 25 percent larger than normal, and he did not play in the opener of a four-game series."It's a huge relief," he said. "It is scary."Canó's right hand was broken last May 13 when hit by a pitch from Detroit's Blaine Hardy, a layoff that became lengthier when he was suspended for 80 games following a positive drug test."I didn't feel the same on this one, but you never know, it can be a small fracture," Canó said.Canó thought... Tue Dec 11 201822:01Callaway says it's OK for Cano not to run out grounders
LAS VEGAS (AP) — Half a loaf is better than none for New York Mets manager Mickey Callaway when it comes to Robinson Cano.New York's new second baseman has been criticized at times for not running hard to first base when he hits infield grounders. Callaway says the 36-year-old is just protecting his body in a way that makes sense."I think Robbie deserves the leeway on that," Callaway said Tuesday at the winter meetings. "And the reason is not because he got out, he's frustrated, that's not the reason he does that. He does it so he can play 155 games, which he's done every year. He's smart. He knows the game. You're not going to see him hit a ball and loaf when there's a chance for it to be a hit. He understands when that ball leaves that fielder's hand, destiny is going to happen. And so he knows how to do that part of it."Cano will hit third in the lineup, Callaway said.An eight-time All-Star, Cano was obtained from the Seattle Mariners on Dec. 3 along with relief pitcher Edwin Diaz for... Fri Aug 10 201815:23FANTASY PLAYS: Deep-season baseball targets on waivers
Fantasy baseball trade deadlines have either passed or are about to pass and even this deep into the season, there's still value on many waiver wires. Here are a few players that can help you in the long and short term.PLAYERS TO PICK UPRYAN MADSON, RP, Washington Nationals (20 percent owned in CBS Sports leagues) — Madson's season long peripheral stats may not impress, but with Kelvin Herrera on the DL, he'll temporarily take over as closer. Madson has experience closing out games and could provide a few weeks of save opportunities. Bid aggressively if you want to grab him off the waiver wire.RANDALL GRICHUK, OF, Toronto Blue Jays (28 percent) — Some considered Grichuk a deep sleeper coming into the 2018 season but he slumped early on. By July 13 he had a .199 batting average. He's turned things around since then, batting .310 with five homers and 14 RBIs. He probably won't continue to hit for high average, but his power bat could help you down the stretch.MANUEL MARGOT, OF, San Diego... [More]
