Thu May 216:31Brayan Bello To Make Rehab Start Tuesday
Boston Red Sox right-hander Brayan Bello (lat) will make a minor-league rehab start with Double-A Portland on Tuesday. Bello has been out the last two weeks with right-lat tightness, but he threw a bullpen session this week and has now been cleared for live game action. If the 24-year-old looks good during his rehab start next week, he could be cleared for activation from the injured list when he's eligible on May 12 to make a start against the Washington Nationals. The Dominican starter was a popular breakout candidate coming into the 2024 season and was looking good before his lat injury, going 3-1 with a 3.04 ERA (4.04 FIP) and 1.05 WHIP with seven walks and 26 strikeouts in 26 2/3 innings of work in his first five starts. Bello should remain stashed in all fantasy formats.

Wed May 117:06Brayan Bello Throws Bullpen Session
Boston Red Sox right-hander Bryan Bello (lat) threw a bullpen session on Tuesday and could have an up-and-down, two-inning simulated outing next, with a possible minor-league rehab start coming next Tuesday. Bello's bullpen session this week was his first time throwing off a mound since he dealt with right-lat tightness last week and was placed on the injured list. It remains to be seen if the 24-year-old will need more than one rehab start before returning to Boston's starting rotation. A popular breakout candidate in 2024, the Dominican hurler went 3-1 with a 3.04 ERA (4.06 FIP) and 1.05 WHIP with seven walks and 26 strikeouts in 26 2/3 innings over his first five starts of the season before going on the shelf. If he was dropped when he landed on the IL, fantasy managers should look go scoop him up off the waiver wire.

Sun Apr 2819:28Brayan Bello Making Great Progress
Boston Red Sox starting pitcher Brayan Bello (lat) has reportedly been making great progress in his recovery, according to manager Alex Cora. The right-hander recently landed on the 15-day injured list, but sounds like Bello should be back sooner rather than later. It's uncertain if the team plans on having Bello go on a rehab assignment. If not, Bello could rejoin the rotation once his injured list stint is over.

Wed Apr 2414:38Brayan Bello Hits 15-Day Injured List
Boston Red Sox right-hander Brayan Bello (lat) has been placed on the 15-day injured list due to right-lat tightness. The club has recalled right-hander Zack Kelly to take his spot on the active roster. It's another tough injury blow to the club's starting rotation as both Garrett Whitlock and Nick Pivetta are sidelined. Additionally, slugger Triston Casas recently suffered a rib fracture, Rafael Devers hasn't played in a week since suffering a knee injury, Trevor Story is out for the season due to shoulder surgery, and Vaughn Grissom has yet to make his Red Sox debut due to a hamstring issue. Bello, the team's Opening Day starter, has worked to a quality 3.04 ERA across five starts, posting a solid 17.3% K-BB% in that time while generating ground balls at another healthy 51.3% rate.

Fri Mar 2909:22Brayan Bello Secures First Victory
Boston Red Sox starting pitcher Brayan Bello picked up his first victory of the season versus the Seattle Mariners on Opening Day this Thursday. The 24-year-old got the nod with the Red Sox dealing with injuries in their rotation and he delivered five strong innings. In those five frames, he allowed five hits, two runs, zero walks and struck out two on the evening. Both runs would come off a Mitch Haniger two-run home run. Managers would like to see more strikeouts for the youngster, but zero walks is just as important to see in the stat line. The Red Sox signed Bello to a six year, $55 million extension this offseason and they as with fantasy managers should have big hopes for the right-hander in 2024. Bello will look to improve to 2-0 in a must-start matchup against the Oakland Athletics in his next outing.

Tue Mar 1912:05Brayan Bello To Start On Opening Day
Boston Red Sox right-hander Brayan Bello will make the team's Opening Day start on March 28 on the road in Seattle against the Mariners. Right-hander Nick Pivetta will get the ball for Game 2. Bello gets the nod to kick things off after Boston gave the 24-year-old a six-year, $55 million contract extension during spring training. He's a young pitcher on the rise after going 12-11 with a 4.24 ERA (4.54 FIP) and 1.34 WHIP with 45 walks and 132 strikeouts in 157 innings over 28 starts in his first full season in the big leagues in 2023. If Bello can add a third effective pitch to his arsenal to keep hitters off balance, he has the potential for a breakout campaign in 2024 for fantasy managers. The matchup on the road in Seattle isn't a bad one for DFS gamers, either. RotoBaller has Bello ranked as the No. 59 fantasy starter going into his third MLB season.

Thu Mar 712:46Red Sox, Brayan Bello Agree To Six-Year Extension
The Boston Red Sox and right-hander Brayan Bello have officially agreed to a six-year, $55 million contract that includes a seventh-year club option for $21 million. The sixth year of the contract covers what would have been Bello's first year of free agency. The 24-year-old, who was mentioned as a candidate to start on Opening Day by manager Alex Cora, posted a 4.24 ERA across 28 starts in the 2023 season, his first full big-league campaign. He managed only a 19.8% K% on the season but he also walked just 6.7% of the batters he faced. ATC projects a 4.28 ERA and a similar 20.2% K% for Bello across 28 starts in the 2024 season. He does have a track record of far superior strikeout rates in the minors but he has yet to find a way to put hitters away consistently in the big leagues, putting a damper on his fantasy value, for now.

Wed Mar 614:16Red Sox, Brayan Bello Deep In Contract Extension Talks
The Boston Red Sox and right-hander Brayan Bello are in deep talks in regards to a contract extension. The potential extension is of the long-term variety and would keep the 24-year-old in Boston beyond the 2028 season. Bello isn't arbitration-eligible until 2026 and has a pair of option years remaining. He made 28 starts for the Red Sox in the 2023 season, working to a 4.24 ERA, 13% K-BB%, and a healthy 56.2% ground-ball rate. He struck out just 19.8% of the hitters he faced a season ago but he also has a history of big-time strikeout rates throughout his minor-league career. He is a decent fantasy option but projects for a 20.2% K% in the 2024 season by ATC but his 4.28 projected ERA could play in deep leagues.

Wed Feb 2112:14Red Sox's Extension Talks With Brayan Bello May Be Heating Up
Boston Red Sox right-hander Brayan Bello said his agents have been engaged in extension talks with the Red Sox in recent weeks and that a deal may be close between the two sides. Bello said "maybe" when asked if a deal could be done before the end of spring training. The 24-year-old isn't eligible for arbitration until after the 2025 season and won't hit free agency until after 2028, but the Red Sox have vowed to be more aggressive in extension talks for younger players who are far from free agency after failing to lock up previous stars Mookie Betts and Xander Bogaerts. Bello is one of the most intriguing young arms in fantasy in 2024 and is expected to anchor Boston's starting rotation this year. He's gone 14-19 with a 4.37 ERA in 214 1/3 innings over 41 games (39 starts) since debuting in July of 2022.

Sat Feb 1712:22Brayan Bello Has New-And-Improved Slider
Boston Red Sox right-hander Brayan Bello worked with Pedro Martinez this offseason and has come to camp with a new-and-improved slider that could lead to a significant step forward for the young pitcher in 2024. The 24-year-old could be Boston's most talented starter, and he feels the new slider can be his key third pitch behind a nasty sinker and a plus changeup. He also has a four-seam fastball. In addition to working on his slider, Bello worked on his physique in the offseason after wearing down a bit late last year in his first full big-league season. He lost his last three starts to finish 12-11 with a 4.24 ERA in 2023. Bello has the raw stuff to be dominant in his second full season in the majors in 2024, and many fantasy managers are targeting him in drafts as a true breakout candidate.

Sun Jan 2112:30Brayan Bello To Emphasize His Slider More In 2024
Boston Red Sox starting pitcher Brayan Bello told reporters over the weekend that he plans to use his slider more during the 2024 season. He only threw his slider 17.7% of the time in 2023 but induced a whiff rate of 25.6% on the pitch, according to Baseball Savant. The 24-year-old appears to be looking for more punchouts in 2024, which is an intriguing proposition for his fantasy prospects. Bello had dominant stretches during 2023 but has never been a big strikeout pitcher. It's worth keeping an eye on his strikeout numbers during Spring Training to see if his slider emphasis is paying dividends. He finished the season with a 12-11 record, 4.24 ERA, 1.338 WHIP, and 132:45 K/BB Ratio over 157 innings (28 starts).

Fri Sep 15 202321:45Brayan Bello Strikes Out 10 In Loss
Boston Red Sox starting pitcher Brayan Bello collected a quality start on Friday night against the Toronto Blue Jays but took the loss, giving up three runs over six innings. He struck out 10, giving up four hits and a walk. The young righty is now 12-9 on the season and sits with a 3.71 ERA. Bello has shown brilliance at times this season, turning in a 2.67 ERA in May and a 2.14 ERA in June. His 4.26 FIP shows he still has some work to do before he can be fully trusted to be on your squad next season.

Thu Aug 24 202309:00Brayan Bello Taking On The Astros Thursday
Boston Red Sox starting pitcher Brayan Bello will make his 22nd start of the season on Thursday when he faces J.P. France and the Houston Astros. The rookie arm is enjoying a solid campaign, as he owns a 3.70 ERA, 1.26 WHIP, and a 19.9% strikeout rate with a 9-7 record over 119 1/3 innings. The Astros still deploy a dangerous lineup, and Bello doesn't offer too much in standard formats, so fantasy managers should only start Bello in deeper leagues.

Tue Aug 8 202301:58Brayan Bello Solid In No-Decision On Monday
Boston Red Sox starting pitcher Brayan Bello threw 6 2/3 innings, giving up one run on six hits and one walk in a no-decision on Monday versus the Kansas City Royals. He struck out two batters. Bello was faced with runners at the corners during the fifth frame after allowing a leadoff double, a stolen base, and a walk, but left them stranded. The 24-year-old was chased by a double from Kyle Isbel, who scored a run which Bello was ultimately accountable for. While the right-hander logged a season-low two punchouts, Monday marked the first time since June 29 that Bello pitched one-run ball, and he's also lasted at least six innings in 10 of his prior 11 showings. The hard-throwing righty takes a 3.64 ERA, 1.23 WHIP, and 91:30 K:BB into a plus draw with the Detroit Tigers on Saturday.

Fri Jun 30 202301:31Brayan Bello Flirts With No-No Thursday
Boston Red Sox starting pitcher Brayan Bello took a hard-luck loss on Thursday, where he pitched seven dominant innings of one-run ball. Bello struck out five and allowed just two hits and a walk. He also took a no-hitter into the eighth before Jean Segura broke it up with a leadoff infield single. The 24-year-old has been excellent this season, sporting a 3.08 ERA and 1.19 WHIP with a 67:22 K:BB ratio. While he has some control issues, his ability to put the ball on the ground as well as get strikeouts gives him great potential. He should be rostered in all leagues at this point and is rising rapidly in the starting pitcher ranks.

The young hurler has been solid for the Red Sox in 2023, notching a 3-4 record, 3.97 ERA, 1.43 WHIP, and 46 strikeouts over 45 1/3 innings of work. Bello will be back on the mound against the New York Yankees on Saturday.

Sat May 27 202315:56Brayan Bello Pitches Well In Loss, Strikes Out Six
Boston Red Sox starting pitcher Brayan Bello allowed two earned runs and took the loss on Tuesday but struck out six batters over seven innings. Bello had a shaky start to his outing, allowing a leadoff home run. Following the homer, Red Sox manager Alex Cora spoke to Bello on the mound. Bello locked in and finished strong but received no run support from his offense. Bello has gone at least five innings and allowed two earned runs or less in each of his last five starts. Bello has shown the ability to be a reliable ground ball pitcher with strikeout upside, and fantasy managers should be excited to have him in their lineups for his upcoming two-start week against the Cincinnati Reds and the Tampa Bay Rays.
