Mon Feb 7 201112:34Lowell still cool with decision to retire
Mike Lowell told Boston's WEEI.com on Monday that he is comfortable with his decision to retire from the game of baseball.
"I know I'm going to miss playing," said Lowell. "But I've been entertaining myself in other ways, so it's been pretty good. It's been a good transition so far." The 36-year-old is scheduled to undergo another surgery on his right hip this spring, so returning was never really an option. He finished up with a .279/.342/.464 career batting line, 223 homers and 1,619 hits.

Sun Sep 26 201009:17Lowell passes tests, but return date unclear
Mike Lowell (head) has passed tests for a possible concussion and was able to take batting practice Saturday.
It's not clear when exactly he'll return to the lineup, but manager Terry Francona said he won't hold Lowell out. The veteran's jaw is sore, but he has had no headaches and was never dizzy as a result of being hit in the head by a groundball that took a bag hop.

Fri Sep 24 201021:36Lowell removed for precautionary reasons
Mike Lowell was removed from Friday's game against the Yankees for precautionary reasons.
Good news. Lowell took a pretty good knock in the head when he was hit by a ground ball in the fourth inning, so it's probably for the best. Hopefully he'll get to play out his final week in the big leagues, as scheduled.

Fri Sep 24 201021:11Lowell hit in head by ground ball, exits game
Mike Lowell left Friday's game against the Yankees after five innings due to being hit in the head by a ground ball.
Some scary stuff. Lowell took a bad-hop on a ground ball while playing first and it smacked him right in the head. He was able to finish the bottom of the fifth inning, but was replaced by Lars Anderson in the sixth. We expect to hear more on his status after the game.

Sat Sep 11 201020:33Lowell says he will retire after this season
Mike Lowell confirmed Saturday that he plans to retire after this season.
"I'm retiring," he said. "I just don't want to make it a song and dance because I don't think that's necessary, but if someone needs something official, yeah, I'm going to retire. This is going to be my last year." Lowell was diagnosed with a non-displaced fracture in his ribcage last week but plans to limp through the rest of 2010. He's hitting .231/.297/.357 with four homers and 21 RBI over 182 at-bats this season for Boston.

Sat Sep 4 201012:09Lowell will play with fractured rib
After undergoing an MRI and CT scan Friday, it's been determined that Mike Lowell has a non-displaced fracture in one of his ribs.
The injury occurred on August 20 when the Blue Jays' John McDonald collided with the veteran at first base. Lowell will play through the ailment. "I'm medically cleared to play and as long as it doesn't bother me it should be fine," said Lowell. "There's really nothing to do. I feel fine." Lowell is batting .267 with two homers and nine RBI over 90 at-bats since coming off the DL.

Tue Aug 31 201017:31Report: Rangers still interested in Lowell
According to T.R. Sullivan of MLB.com, the Rangers still have interest in Mike Lowell.
According to Sullivan, talks with the Red Sox "may have heated up." The Rangers are currently in the market for a right-handed bat and are also reportedly speaking with the Mets about Jeff Francoeur. Lowell might make a bit more sense, since the team is apparently unhappy with the production they've received from Jorge Cantu. Sullivan writes that the team is also considering Reed Johnson and Ryan Spilborghs, how they appear to have set their sites on Lowell and/or Francouer.

Mike Lowell is still likely to retire after the 2010 season.
"I'm pretty much set in knowing what I'm going to do after this year," said Lowell. "It will be fun. It will be fun enjoying my kids." Lowell, playing every day with Kevin Youkilis out, is batting .229 with a .685 OPS this season.

Wed Aug 4 201009:07Lowell was nearly Yankee, Blue Jay
Mike Lowell was nearly traded twice this season, once to the Yankees and once to the Blue Jays.
In the Yankees deal, it would have been a three-way trade with Texas, with Jarrod Saltalamacchia going to Boston and prospects going to Texas. A deal with the Blue Jays was nixed due to concerns over Lowell playing on artificial turf. It's possible the Sox could still deal Lowell to a team like St. Louis, who is now in need of a third baseman, but it's much less likely now that Kevin Youkilis is on the DL.

Tue Aug 3 201022:10Mike Lowell cranks homer in return from DL
Mike Lowell hit a two-run homer in Tuesday's win against the Indians.
Lowell was activated from the 15-day disabled list and drew the start at first base. The homer was his only hit in the game, but it proved to be the difference. With Kevin Youkilis on the disabled list, Lowell has AL-only value.

Mon Aug 2 201008:14Lowell nearly traded to Yankees last week
Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com reports that the Red Sox nearly traded Mike Lowell to the Yankees last week in a three-team swap.
The deal also included the Rangers, though it's not clear what they would have received or how exactly they were involved. Lowell, 36, is 11-for-22 with four home runs on his current rehab assignment with Triple-A Pawtucket and could still be dealt via waivers. For now he remains in limbo.

Sun Aug 1 201008:12Lowell likely to be designated for assignment
The Red Sox are likely to designate Mike Lowell for assignment.
Lowell is done with his rehab, but he's been in a holding pattern, as he's been in Boston with the team but not active as he waits for the Sox to find a team that wants to trade for him. The deadline has passed, so the next step might be to designate the third baseman for assignment. It's possible he could be passed through waivers and traded in August, but the Sox clearly don't want to add him to the active roster, and they probably don't want him just waiting around until they find someone to trade with. Either way, Lowell's tenure with Boston appears to be over.

Sat Jul 31 201008:21Lowell back with Sox after rehab assignment
Mike Lowell is back with the Red Sox following a five-game rehab assignment at Triple-A Pawtucket.
He has not, however, been activated from the DL yet. The Red Sox are seeing whether they can find someone to deal for Lowell before they add him to the active roster. "Just kind of told them to hang on for a day or so,'' said manager Terry Francona. "There's possible movement. The deadline's [today]. It just seems to make sense to get through another day or two days, and then do what we need to do.'' Lowell hasn't played for the Sox since mid-June due to a hip ailment, but he did hit .500 with four home runs and a 1.727 OPS at Pawtucket.

The Red Sox will not activate Mike Lowell prior to Friday's game, reports the Boston Globe's Amelie Benjamin.
Lowell is through rehabbing in the minors, but the Red Sox aren't prepared to make room for him on the roster. A trade remains their preference.

Mike Lowell (hip) has left Triple-A Pawtucket and could be activated off the disabled list on Friday, reports the Boston Globe.

Mon Jul 26 201017:32Rangers and Tigers losing interest in Lowell
Gordon Edes of ESPNBoston.com reports that the Rangers and Tigers are losing interest in Mike Lowell.
The Rangers, who recently sent a scout to Triple-A Pawtucket, are reportedly "closing in" on a deal with the Marlins for Jorge Cantu, which would effectively eliminate the need for Lowell. The Tigers, who are depleted with injuries at the moment, recently sent two scouts to Triple-A Pawtucket, but a source told Edes that a trade for Lowell is unlikely.
