Mon Apr 2210:29Orelvis Martinez Has Incredible Week
Toronto Blue Jays infield prospect Orelvis Martinez had an incredible week for Triple-A Buffalo. Martinez, 22, went 10-for-28 with five home runs and 13 RBI. The young budding star has been on a tear this season and overall has hit an astounding .333 with 6 six homers, 18 RBI and a 1.073 OPS over his first 18 games. Martinez has done enough offensively to prove his point to the Blue Jays front office, but it is his defense that it appears the club wants to be certain on with Martinez as he already has five errors. Martinez was brought up as a shortstop, but has exclusively played second base for Buffalo with Bo Bichette set at the shortstop position for the Blue Jays. Martinez is currently on the 40-man roster and offers much more upside than the currently second base operation of Davis Schneider and Cavan Biggio. If Martinez continues to tear the cover off the ball, he may force the Jays hand very soon. As of now, he is worth a speculative add in deeper formats and should already be rostered in dynasty leagues.

Fri Apr 1907:56Orelvis Martinez Crushes Go-Ahead Home Run
Toronto Blue Jays shortstop/second base prospect Orelvis Martinez launched his third home run of the season in the top of the ninth inning, which eventually served as the game-winner. The 22-year-old went 2-5 in Thursday's game and is batting .305/.359/.576 across the young part of the season. Martinez is doing much better in Triple-A this season compared to last year, where he hit for a .263/.340/.507 slash line with 11 home runs. Martinez is making quite a case for a promotion and should come up as a second baseman, since Bo Bichette will continue to serve as the team's shortstop. The second-ranked prospect in the Toronto system is worth stashing in deeper leagues for now.

Wed Apr 1722:59Orelvis Martinez Crushes A Grand Slam Wednesday
Toronto Blue Jays infield prospect Orelvis Martinez launched a 469-foot grand slam on Wednesday for Triple-A Buffalo. It was the only hit he had in the game, but it was a big one as it put the Bisons ahead in extra-innings and extended his hitting streak to 11 games. The 22-year-old is making his best case for a promotion, hitting .296 with six doubles, two home runs, 10 RBI, and 13 runs scored over 14 games in 2024. Bo Bichette has him blocked at shortstop though, so he'd have to play third or second base. Wherever he ends up, he'll bring plenty of pop with his 60-grade power.

Mon Apr 815:00Orelvis Martinez Picks Up Three More Hits
Toronto Blue Jays shortstop prospect Orelvis Martinez went 3-for-5 with three runs and a double for Triple-A Buffalo on Sunday. Martinez is now hitting ,296 on the young season. The 22-year-old hasn't homered yet, but the power should come as he has 28 or more in the past three seasons on the farm. With Bo Bichette entrenched at shortstop, Martinez has been playing second base and provides some added competition to Cavan Biggio and Davis Schnieder at the big-league level. Martinez has always shown plenty of power and his upside is much greater than Schnieder and Biggio. Should the Blue Jays feel comfortable with him defensively at second base and the later two struggle, it wouldn't be a surprise to see Martinez make his big-league debut in 2024. Martinez should already be rostered in dynasty leagues and is a name to keep an eye on in redraft formats.

Sun Aug 27 202319:02Orelvis Martinez Continues Strong Season In The Minors
Toronto Blue Jays prospect Orelvis Martinez has continued his strong offensive season, bouncing back from a horrid start to 2023. One month into the season, the shortstop was sitting at just .089/.159/.240 with three home runs. Since then, Martinez has hit .269/.377/.539 with 20 HRs in 87 games, including a July promotion to Triple-A Buffalo. The 21-year-old appears on most post-draft Top-100 lists and has answered some concerns regarding his on-base skills as he has hit .242/.344/.496 in 102 games. Even without an opening at shortstop, the bat could still play somewhere in Toronto in the coming weeks. Martinez could provide a power boost over the final stretch of this season and could earn a regular role in 2024.

Wed Aug 2 202309:42Orelvis Martinez Has Plenty Of Power In His Bat
Toronto Blue Jays shortstop/third base prospect Orelvis Martinez has struggled since being promoted to Triple-Buffalo on July 17. Martinez, 21, hasn't hit much for average at either stop this season, but has shown plenty of power out of his bat with 19 homers between Double-A New Hampshire and Triple-A Buffalo. He has also driven in 56 runs with a .223 batting average. Martinez has always shown plenty of power in his bat, but his pitch selection has been his biggest barrier thus far. With Blue Jays shortstop Bo Bichette currently day-to-day with knee inflammation and the possibility of an injured list stint, Martinez would make for an exciting replacement, but the Blue Jays acquired Paul DeJong in a deadline deal and also have fellow shortstop Addison Barger in Triple-A. Martinez is worth rostering in dynasty formats due to his power, but managers shouldn't expect that to be on display in the big leagues this season.

Wed Jul 12 202321:25Orelvis Martinez Expected To Be Promoted To Triple-A
Toronto Blue Jays infield prospect Orelvis Martinez, the team's No. 4 prospect per MLB Pipeline, is expected to be promoted from Double-A New Hampshire to Triple-A Buffalo in the coming days. After making pitch recognition and swing decisions a focal point after he hit just .203 with 30 home runs a year ago at New Hampshire, Martinez is currently slashing .230/.344/.494 with an .838 OPS, 17 home runs, nine doubles, a triple, 46 RBI and 33 runs scored in 69 games in 2023. He's hit .301 over his last 47 games. The 21-year-old's strikeout percentage is down from 28.5% to 19.8%, while his walk rate has gone from 8.1% to 14.2%. With Matt Chapman due to be a free agent after this year, Martinez could be the immediate replacement at third base for Toronto in 2024.

Wed May 31 202316:22Orelvis Martinez Blasts 14th Home Run
Toronto Blue Jays No. 4 prospect Orelvis Martinez launched his 14th home run of the season and the 11th in May alone. The power surge is nothing new for the 21-year-old, who managed 30 long balls across 118 games in 2022 and 28 over 98 appearances in 2021. Martinez's 60-grade power has never really been called into question. Instead, it's his plate discipline that leaves the organization wanting more. He's cut his strikeout rate to 22.4% while his walk rate is up to 12%. Still, Martinez carries just a .781 OPS due to his .179 batting average, down from .203 last season. His prolific power potential will make for an appealing fantasy asset, but it's clear Martinez has work to do before he gets called up to the majors.

Mon Mar 13 202319:40Orelvis Martinez Optioned To Minors
Toronto Blue Jays infielder Orelvis Martinez has been optioned to Triple-A Buffalo on Monday. The 21-year-old put together an impressive spring, hitting .267 with two home runs and six RBI. He shouldn't need to much more time in the minors before he's ready for the big league level. Last season, Martinez blasted 30 home runs with 76 RBI in 118 games in Double-A. However, he produced a .203/.286/.446 slash line, so there is still room for improvement. Fantasy managers in redraft leagues should keep an eye on Martinez this season.

Mon Mar 6 202309:13Orelvis Martinez Blasts First Homer Of Spring
Toronto Blue Jays shortstop prospect Orelvis Martinez went 1-for-2 with a three-run homer on Sunday versus the Philadelphia Phillies. Martinez, 21, has now gone 2-for-6 in a small sample size this spring. Traditionally a shortstop, Martinez suited up at third base and that could potentially be his long-term position with shortstop Bo Bichette locked up for the next three years and third baseman Matt Chapman due to enter free agency following the season. Martinez has been one of the Blue Jays top prospects since signing with the organization in 2019 and a consensus top-100 prospect during that span. Despite going yard for 30 homers and 76 RBI in 2022 for Double-A New Hampshire, Martinez hit a career low .203 in 433 at-bats. The power is certainly there for the youngster, but he must improve his plate discipline before being promoted to the show. There is the chance that Martinez makes his big-league debut in 2023, but he may need an injury to Bitchette or Chapman for that to come to fruition. For now, Martinez is an exciting name for managers in redraft leagues to keep an eye on, but his best value is in dynasty leagues where he should be universally rostered.

Tue Jul 26 202208:34Orelvis Martinez Enjoying Strong Start To Second Half
Toronto Blue Jays shortstop prospect Orelvis Martinez is off to an impressive start post-All-Star break. One of the team's best prospects, he boasts good bat speed and more power than you would expect out of an undersized shortstop. Although his home run totals continue to garner plenty of attention, there's no denying that Martinez's discipline needs to improve. He chases far too many pitches out of the zone, especially ones that miss outside. The 20-year-old has spent most of his time at shortstop but could transition to third base pretty seamlessly if needed. Martinez's second half of the season got off to a hot start this past week. He went 0-for-4 in his first game back, but then proceeded to go 6-for-8 with three homers, one double and five RBI over the course of his last two contests. The right-hander scored five runs in the process and also managed to increase his slugging percentage by 43 points. Anticipate a mid-2023 MLB debut for the Dominican Republic native.

Tue Mar 1 202222:44Orelvis Martinez Emerging In Blue Jays Pipeline
Toronto Blue Jays shortstop/third baseman Orelvis Martinez, the team's No. 2 prospect per MLB Pipeline, has been emerging as the "next big thing" in Toronto's organization for a few years now. Martinez led the Jays system in 2021 with 28 home runs and an .895 OPS in 98 games with Low-A Dunedin and High-A Vancouver at 19 years old. He continues to develop at 20 years old and his 6-foot-1 frame has filled out well. The eye-popping power is mostly what the Blue Jays believe in for the future, and he also made strides to cut down on his high strikeout rate last year. Martinez's defense is a work in progress, but his arm strength is plus, and he's expected to continue splitting time between shortstop and third base in 2022.
