Tue Apr 2316:31Spencer Torkelson Getting First Day Off
Detroit Tigers first baseman Spencer Torkelson is getting his first day off of the season on Tuesday against the Tampa Bay Rays. Torkelson made it 23 games before getting his first day of rest in 2024, and he's currently hitting .231/.311/.319 with a league-leading eight doubles, no home runs, 10 RBI and 10 runs scored in 104 plate appearances. Mark Canha is getting the start at first base and will hit third for the Tigers, while Riley Greene is the designated hitter and batting leadoff against Rays right-hander Ryan Pepiot. It's pretty concerning that Torkelson, the former first overall pick in 2020 out of Arizona State, has yet to clear the bases so far this year. Neither Canha nor Greene have faced Pepiot in their careers.

Fri Mar 1509:10Spencer Torkelson Struggling In Grapefruit League
Detroit Tigers first baseman Spencer Torkelson went 0-for-2 with a walk in Thursday's Grapefruit League action against the New York Yankees. The former first overall pick is now hitting a putrid .115 with three RBI and a run scored over his first 26 at-bats. The 24-year-old has had an up-and-down career thus far, but he finished strong in 2023 and provided plenty of power with 31 homers and 94 RBI to go along with a .233 batting average. Torkelson has been a popular sleeper this offseason with the expectation that he take another step forward in 2024, but with an ADP of 118, managers should continue to keep an eye on the slugger before making a big commitment that could go either way. Regardless, even if he struggles in the batting average department, the power should be able to help managers.

Fri Mar 116:18Spencer Torkelson Looking For Encore In 2024
Detroit Tigers first baseman Spencer Torkelson played in more games (159) than any player on the team in 2023 and hit .233/.313/.446 with 31 home runs, 34 doubles, one triple, 94 RBI and 88 runs scored in his second major-league season. In early May, he was hitting .198 with only two home runs. He was worth only 1.4 fWAR at first base and his on-base percentage was only .313. Torkelson's minus-11 defensive runs saved was the worst total from any MLB first baseman since Miguel Cabrera and Chris Davis in 2017. The former first overall pick in 2020 has stuff he can work on, mainly his defense and getting on base more, but 2023 was a vast improvement over his rookie campaign. Torkelson could take another step forward in 2024 and already has elite raw power from the right side. RotoBaller has him ranked as the No. 11 fantasy first baseman.

Sun Sep 24 202319:23Spencer Torkelson Drives In Two Runs Sunday
Detroit Tigers first baseman Spencer Torkelson delivered on Sunday afternoon, going 2-for-4 with a double while driving in two crucial runs to lead the Tigers to a 2-0 victory over the Athletics in Oakland. With the bases loaded in the third inning, Torkelson broke the scoreless tie with a well-placed two-run single to right field. The 24-year-old power hitter started the game strong with a double in the first inning. As the season approaches its final week, Torkelson carries a solid .232/.312/.441 slash line along with 29 dingers, 88 RBI, and three stolen bases.

Thu Sep 7 202322:56Spencer Torkelson Blasts Two Two-Run Homers Thursday
Spencer Torkelson, the first baseman for the Detroit Tigers, hit two two-run home runs to lead his team to a 10-3 victory over the Yankees on Thursday. Torkelson also walked once and struck out in the game. The 24-year-old right-handed hitter has been on a hot streak, hitting three home runs and driving in seven runs in the last seven games. Despite striking out 145 times in 2023, he has cracked 27 home runs and recorded 76 RBI in his second season as a big leaguer.

Mon Aug 21 202322:08Spencer Torkelson Surging, Goes Yard Again In Loss
Detroit Tigers first baseman Spencer Torkelson went 4-for-5 with a home run, a double, and three runs scored in Monday's 7-6 loss to the Chicago Cubs. The 23-year-old was on the front end of back-to-back homers with the red-hot Kerry Carpenter in the sixth inning to get the Tigers in the scoring column. Speaking of red-hot, Torkelson, the 2020 No. 1 overall pick, is finally beginning to look the part recently. Over his last 12 games since Aug. 9, Torkelson is batting a torrid .395 (17-for-43) with eight round-trippers, four doubles, 10 RBI, and one stolen base during this period. It's about time to add the hard-hitting infielder in all fantasy leagues wherever Torkelson remains available.

Thu Jun 29 202322:20Spencer Torkelson Homers Twice In Thursday's Win
Detroit Tigers first baseman Spencer Torkelson went 2-for-3 with two walks, two home runs, and four RBI in Thursday's 8-5 win over the Texas Rangers. He took Cody Bradford deep in the fifth inning and later bashed his second homer off John King during the eighth inning in Thursday's win. The 23-year-old had his first-multi-homer game of the season and racked up a career four RBI on Thursday. He is slashing .223/.304/.392 with 11 home runs, 39 RBI, 36 runs, and two stolen bases over 78 games in 2023. Torkelson has homered in two of his last three games, and fantasy managers should continue to roll with the former No. 1 overall pick in the 2020 MLB Draft while he's wielding a hot bat.

Tue Jun 13 202307:51Spencer Torkelson Homers, Hits Walk-Off Single Monday
Detroit Tigers first baseman Spencer Torkelson went 3-for-6 with a homer and three RBI in a 6-5 win over the Atlanta Braves in 10 innings on Monday. Torkelson played the hero on Monday as his two-run shot in the bottom of the ninth put the Tigers within one run of tying the game. He then came back with a walk-off single in the bottom of the 10th inning. Torkelson is now hitting .232 with six homers, 26 runs, 29 RBI, and two steals across 237 at-bats. The 2020 first-overall pick certainly has the pedigree to be a difference-making hitter in fantasy if he can show more consistency at the plate.

Sun Apr 16 202312:16Spencer Torkelson Sitting On Sunday
Detroit Tigers first baseman Spencer Torkelson is not in the team's starting lineup on Sunday against the San Francisco Giants. It appears to be a normal day of rest for Torkelson in the series finale against the Gigantes. In his absence, Tyler Nevin will get the start at the cold corner and will hit sixth against Giants right-hander Logan Webb. Torkelson, the first overall pick in 2020, continues to struggle with pitching at the big-league level, as he's gone 12-for-56 (.214) with just one home run, eight RBI and seven runs scored in his first 14 games in 2023. In his first 124 major-league games with Detroit, he's slashing .204/.276/.320 with nine homers, 36 RBI and 113 strikeouts in 463 plate appearances.

Thu Mar 30 202314:24Spencer Torkelson Hitting Fifth On Opening Day
Detroit Tigers first baseman Spencer Torkelson will open the 2022 season out of the team's five-hole as they take on the Tampa Bay Rays and left-hander Shane McClanahan on Thursday. Plenty of eyes will be on the 2020 No. 1 overall pick this season after a vastly underwhelming MLB debut that saw him hit just .203 with eight home runs and a .604 OPS across 110 games with the Tigers last season. Despite making plenty of hard contact, Torkelson hit just .268 with one HR and three doubles alongside a .692 OPS across 20 Grapefruit League games this spring. Nonetheless, he should get every opportunity to bounce back with a strong sophomore season in 2023.

Thu Jan 19 202318:10Spencer Torkelson Will Have Shot To Be 1B Regular
It sounds as though Detroit Tigers first baseman Spencer Torkelson will get every chance to earn a regular role at first base for the team in 2023. He will meet with the Tigers hitting coaches this week in Arizona. "We have other options if we need to, but clearly our best team has Spencer Torkelson as a major contributor," manager A.J. Hinch said. The Tigers don't have many other viable options for the cold corner, and Torkelson was the No. 1 overall pick of the 2020 draft, so Detroit has plenty invested in him. The 23-year-old power hitter struggled mightily in his first taste of the majors last year and was optioned to Triple-A Toledo, where he didn't fare a lot better. He's still young, though, and possessed plenty of pop, so he remains very interesting in dynasty/keeper leagues.

Wed Aug 31 202216:39Spencer Torkelson To Be Called Up
The Detroit Tigers will call up rookie first baseman Spencer Torkelson and infielder Ryan Kreidler when rosters expand on Thursday. Torkelson was optioned to Triple-A Toledo on July 17 after hitting just .197/.282/.295 with five home runs, 21 RBI, 25 runs scored and 76 strikeouts in his first 83 major league games for Detroit. The Tigers always planned on bringing him back up when rosters expanded. The 23-year-old hit .228/.347/.394 with five long balls, 17 RBI, 18 runs scored, a stolen base and 40 strikeouts in 150 plate appearances over 34 games with Toledo, so it's not like he killed it on the farm. Torkelson probably isn't worth the trouble in shallow mixed leagues to close out the season, and he could be sharing time at first base with Harold Castro.

Wed Aug 24 202216:31Tigers Want Spencer Torkelson To Return This Season
The Detroit Tigers want rookie first baseman Spencer Torkelson to return to the big leagues before the end of the 2022 season, but they would much prefer that his promotion be based on his production/improvement at Triple-A Toledo. "Our goal when we sent him down was for him to come back. He's got to be trending in the right direction," skipper A.J. Hinch said. Torkelson was hitting just .197/.282/.295 with five home runs, 21 RBI and 25 runs scored in his first 264 MLB at-bats before his demotion to Toledo. In 28 games at Toledo, he's gone 24-for-106 (.226) with four home runs, 13 RBI, 16 runs scored and 35 strikeouts. The 22-year-old must remain rostered in dynasty/keeper leagues, but he's unlikely to do much for those in single-year mixed leagues the rest of the way.

Fri Jul 1 202221:59Spencer Torkelson Removed After HBP
Detroit Tigers first baseman Spencer Torkelson was removed from Friday's game against the Kansas City Royals after getting hit in the head by a pitch in the seventh inning. Torkelson went 1-for-2 in the game before getting plunked in the helmet by an 88 MPH pitch from right-hander Brad Keller. Torkelson reportedly looked fine while walking off the field and into the dugout under his own power. Look for an update on the prized rookie sometime after Friday's game ends.

Tue Jun 14 202215:04Spencer Torkelson Isn't Starting Tuesday
Detroit Tigers first baseman Spencer Torkelson isn't in the lineup on Tuesday. The Tigers will take on the Chicago White Sox and right-handed starter Dylan Cease but will do so with Torkelson on the bench. The rookie is hitting .181 with a .281 on-base percentage and four home runs in 196 plate appearances this season. Kody Clemens is batting eighth and starting in Torkelson's place at first base on Tuesday. Clemens didn't register a hit in his first 18 Major League plate appearances this season but had a pair of hits and two runs scored in Monday's contest.

Sat Jun 4 202213:08Spencer Torkelson Sitting Out On Saturday
Detroit Tigers first baseman Spencer Torkelson is sitting out on Saturday vs. the New York Yankees. This looks to just be a routine day off for the rookie, who's slashing a solid .304/.360/.391 over his last seven games (23 at-bats) but has struggled overall this year. Torkelson is still hitting below the Mendoza Line with a subpar .199/.302/.322 batting line to go along with four home runs and 12 RBI across 146 at-bats for the season. Harold Castro will man first base and hit third against Yankee starter Luis Severino. There isn't much fantasy value to be had across the light-hitting Tigers lineup.

Sat May 28 202212:33Spencer Torkelson Sitting Saturday
Detroit Tigers rookie first baseman Spencer Torkelson is getting the day off on Saturday against the Cleveland Guardians. Torkelson was initially scheduled to receive the day off on Friday before the game against the Guardians was postponed due to inclement weather. The former first overall pick in 2020 has had a tough go of it in his first 40 major league games, as he's hitting just .179/.292/.309 with a .601 OPS, four home runs, 11 RBI and nine runs scored in 144 plate appearances. The power is real, but the 22-year-old will continue to have growing pains in his rookie season. Harold Castro is at first base and is hitting fifth on Saturday against Guardians right-hander Shane Bieber.

Fri May 27 202215:05Spencer Torkelson Not Starting Friday
Detroit Tigers first baseman Spencer Torkelson is not in the starting lineup on Friday against the Cleveland Guardians. Torkelson has swung a better bat of late, but he's still hitting just .179/.292/.309 with four home runs, 11 RBI and nine runs scored in his first 40 major league games in his rookie season. The former Arizona State product has plenty of power, but he needs to make more contact to do consistent damage for fantasy managers. Harold Castro is at first base and is batting fifth on Friday against Guardians right-hander Shane Bieber. Castro is sporting a .301 batting average with three home runs, eight RBI and 10 runs scored in 76 plate appearances over 25 games for Detroit.

Tue May 10 202211:02Miguel Cabrera, Spencer Torkelson Sitting In Game 1
Detroit Tigers designated hitter Miguel Cabrera and first baseman Spencer Torkelson are both sitting out of the lineup for Game 1 of a doubleheader on Tuesday against the Oakland Athletics. Austin Meadows will serve as the DH and will hit second, while Harold Castro draws the start at first base and is hitting fifth against A's right-hander Frankie Montas. Fantasy managers should expect both Miggy and Torkelson to return to the starting lineup for the second game of the twin bill against right-hander Adrian Martinez. Cabrera already reached the 3,000-hit milestone this year, but he has only one home run and nine RBI in his first 25 games. Torkelson, meanwhile, is hitting just .160 with three dingers and eight RBI in his first 26 major league contests.

Sun Apr 24 202200:09Spencer Torkelson Homers During Saturday's Doubleheader
Detroit Tigers first baseman Spencer Torkelson reached base three times over Saturday's two games against the Colorado Rockies. He was 2-for-5 with a three-run home run in game one and 0-for-3 with a walk in the second game. The rookie is now slashing .214/.353/.452 with three long balls. Even with the low batting average, fantasy managers should be happy with Torkelson's production thus far and can expect to see more as he gets more comfortable in the major leagues. After all, he hit .267 with a .935 OPS in 121 minor league games last year and is rated as the fourth-best prospect in baseball by MLB Pipeline.
