Tue Mar 2617:26Shane Baz, Taj Bradley Officially Placed On Injured List
The Tampa Bay Rays officially placed right-handers Shane Baz (elbow) and Taj Bradley (pectoral) on the 15-day injured list on Tuesday, retroactive to March 25. Baz, 24, also dealt with an oblique injury in spring training as he attempts to return from Tommy John surgery in September of 2022. After not pitching at all in 2023, Baz is certainly going to be limited in what he can do for both the Rays and fantasy managers this year, and there's no specific timetable for when he might make his 2024 debut. A return at some point this summer is most likely. Bradley, 23, was diagnosed with a pectoral strain on March 13. He also doesn't have a specific timetable for a return, but he should be back before Baz. There's a lot to like about his strikeout upside, but he gave up too many homers and struggled with his command in his rookie season in 2023.

Tue Mar 510:31Shane Baz Return Delayed A Week By Oblique Injury
Tampa Bay Rays pitcher Shane Baz (elbow), who has been working his way back from Tommy John surgery, was close to throwing his first live batting practice session but "tweaked an oblique picking up a weight." It's estimated that the 24-year-old will be delayed in his throwing progression by about a week now. Baz wasn't going to be ready by Opening Day anyway, but this would seemingly push back the start of his regular season debut as well, whenever that might be. As of now, the former first-round draft pick is projected to make 16 starts, but his NFBC ADP of 211 is looking very pricey.

Fri Feb 1622:25Shane Baz Targeting Late-Summer Return
Tampa Bay Rays right-hander Shane Baz (elbow) threw his first bullpen session of spring training on Friday and said it went "great." Baz is being brought along slowly in camp after having Tommy John surgery in September of 2022, and he's targeting a late-summer return to the Rays pitching staff after not pitching at all in 2023. The 24-year-old has only made nine big-league starts (40 1/3 innings) in 2021 and 2022, which is the primary reason the Rays aren't in a rush to bring him back this year. In those nine starts, he's gone 3-2 with a 4.02 ERA and 1.12 WHIP with 12 walks and 48 strikeouts. Baz has never thrown more than 82 innings in the minors. either, and with durability concerns, he's really not worth the risk in most fantasy leagues with an innings limit to boot in 2024.

Tue Feb 1314:23Shane Baz To Be Built Up Slowly
Tampa Bay Rays president of baseball operations Erik Neander said that right-hander Shane Baz (elbow) has completed his rehab. However, his issue is a lack of past workload, so he will be on a slow buildup coming out of spring training. The 24-year-old underwent Tommy John surgery almost 17 months ago and didn't pitch at all in 2023. In two big-league seasons prior to that, he only made nine starts covering 40 1/3 innings pitched, so he will surely be on a strict innings limit this season. Baz has a 4.02 ERA (4.30 FIP) and 1.12 WHIP with 12 walks and 48 strikeouts in his 40 1/3 major-league innings. Dating back to his time in the minors, Baz hasn't thrown more than 82 innings in any season, so fantasy managers need to temper their expectations in deeper leagues in 2024.

Fri Mar 3 202314:05Shane Baz Expected To Throw In 3-4 Weeks
Tampa Bay Rays right-hander Shane Baz (elbow) has joined the team in camp and has been progressing well from late-September Tommy John surgery. He expects to start throwing in three to four weeks. The 23-year-old has a bright future for the Rays, but fantasy managers can forget about him in redraft leagues for the 2023 season, as he'll miss the entire year. But even when he returns in 2024, Baz will likely have workload restrictions that will limit his fantasy ceiling. He threw a career-high 92 innings in 2021 and has only thrown 40 innings as a major-league starter. Baz is still worth holding in keeper/dynasty formats, but we may not see his true ceiling until 2025.

Sat Sep 24 202218:10Shane Baz To Undergo Tommy John Surgery
Tampa Bay Rays right-handed pitcher Shane Baz (elbow) is set to undergo Tommy John surgery, meaning he will miss the entire 2023 season. Tough news for the 23-year-old, who burst onto the scene in 2021 before having an injury-riddled 2022 season. He has dealt with elbow issues throughout the year, dating all the way back to spring training, so the writing seemed to be on the wall. Baz ended up making just nine starts this season, going 3-2 with a 4.02 ERA, 1.12 WHIP, and 48 strikeouts in 40 IP. This is tough news for Baz's dynasty league owners, but the hope now is that he can come back strong in 2024 and not have the recurring elbow issues he had this season.

Thu Sep 15 202216:28Shane Baz Shut Down For The Season
Tampa Bay Rays right-hander Shane Baz (elbow) is throwing and seems to be doing just fine in his recovery from an elbow injury, but he will not pitch in games again this year. Baz had resumed throwing late last month, but the Rays will not rush the 23-year-old back this year, even for a potential postseason run. In his first two big-league seasons, Baz has only made nine starts, going 3-2 with a 4.02 ERA (4.30 FIP), a 1.12 WHIP and a 48:12 K:BB in 40 1/3 innings. The Rays and fantasy managers will be hoping that he's fully healthy way ahead of spring training next year as he looks to lay claim to a starting rotation spot.

Thu Aug 25 202211:18Shane Baz To Resume Throwing On Monday
Tampa Bay Rays right-hander Shane Baz (elbow) said his last checkup went well and he's feeling good, and he will start throwing on Monday. Baz is planning as if he will pitch again in games this season, but he knows there may not be enough time and the decision ultimately may not be his to make. The 23-year-old is currently on the 60-day injured list due to a right elbow sprain, and the Rays surely won't rush him back if they aren't confident that he's fully healthy, although it would certainly be nice to have him for a postseason run. He'll be eligible to return on Sept. 9, but even if he makes it back before the end of the season, he won't be of much help to fantasy managers. Baz has made only six starts in 2022, allowing 15 earned runs on 27 hits (five homers) while walking nine and striking out 30 in 27 innings pitched.

Thu Aug 11 202211:14Shane Baz Unlikely To Return This Year
A scan of Tampa Bay Rays right-hander Shane Baz's (elbow) sprained right elbow "went well," according to manager Kevin Cash. However, the chances of him returning this year seem unlikely since he will have to do two weeks of plyometric exercises before he resumes throwing, with a lengthy build-up needed. In other injury news for the Rays, reliever J.P. Feyereisen (shoulder) is headed for an MRI exam on Thursday after being shut down from playing catch recently due to discomfort. Right-hander Matt Wisler (neck) received injections to try and relax his stiff neck. Tyler Glasnow (elbow) said his Wednesday bullpen session went well, and he remains on schedule to start throwing live batting practice on Aug. 20. Lefty Josh Fleming (oblique) is throwing bullpen sessions and will start facing hitters on Tuesday.

Thu Jul 14 202214:59Shane Baz Lands On Injured List
The Tampa Bay Rays placed starting pitcher Shane Baz (elbow) on the 15-day injured list on Thursday with a right elbow sprain. He will rest for a month and then be re-evaluated to determine a timetable for his return to action. Baz will also receive an injection in his right elbow. In a corresponding move, right-hander Luke Bard was recalled from Triple-A Durham. Baz experienced right elbow discomfort while playing catch on Tuesday. The 23-year-old probably won't be an option again for fantasy managers until some point in September, barring any setbacks during his rehab. He's allowed 15 earned runs on 27 hits while walking nine and striking out 30 in 27 innings over his six starts this year, but he can probably be dropped in most mixed leagues if you don't have the room to stash him.

Wed Jun 29 202214:33Shane Baz Solid On Tuesday
Tampa Bay Rays starter Shane Baz turned in a quality outing on Tuesday against the Milwaukee Brewers. The right-hander pitched 5.2 innings and allowed just three hits, a pair of walks, and an earned run. He also struck out six batters while throwing 95 pitches. Baz registered 15 swinging strikes on the day and finished with a 31% CSW rate. Moving forward, the starting pitcher's next outing will likely come during Tampa Bay's upcoming five-game series in Toronto against the Blue Jays. For the season, the 23-year-old has pitched to a 3.38 ERA, a 3.56 FIP, 21 strikeouts, and seven walks in 18.2 innings of work.

Wed Jun 8 202216:44Shane Baz To Make Season Debut On Saturday
Tampa Bay Rays starting pitcher Shane Baz (elbow) will make his season debut as the team's starting pitcher for Saturday's game against the Minnesota Twins, according to Rays manager Kevin Cash. Baz underwent surgery on his right elbow back in March and he's been working his way back ever since. He made four rehab starts at Triple-A over the past month and performed well. Across 13 innings, he allowed eight hits, four walks and two earned runs while striking out 20. The 22-year-old has immense upside and is worth rostering in all fantasy leagues. The team may limit his innings over the next few weeks, but he has the potential to be a difference-maker for fantasy managers during the latter half of the 2022 season.

Tue Jun 7 202217:18Shane Baz To Join Rays Rotation This Weekend
Tampa Bay Rays right-hander Shane Baz (elbow) will join the team's starting rotation this weekend against the Minnesota Twins, but it's still undecided on what day he will pitch, according to manager Kevin Cash. The 22-year-old will make his season debut this weekend after making his fourth minor league rehab start for Triple-A Durham on Sunday. He allowed just two earned runs on eight hits while walking four and striking out 20 in 13 innings on his rehab assignment. Baz will take the rotation spot of Ryan Yarbrough, who was optioned to Durham on Tuesday. The young right-hander has plenty of fantasy upside after he looked great in his first three big-league starts last year (2.03 ERA, 18 K's) in 13 1/3 frames.

Mon Jun 6 202211:16Shane Baz Strikes Out 10 In Rehab Game
Tampa Bay Rays right-hander Shane Baz (elbow), the No. 12 overall prospect in baseball per MLB Pipeline, had a career-high 10 strikeouts while allowing one run on four hits in 4 1/3 innings in his fourth minor league rehab start for Triple-A Durham on Sunday. The 22-year-old prospect was scheduled to go five innings, but he was pulled after retiring the first batter of the fifth inning on his 79th pitch. Baz is eligible to be activated from the 60-day injured list on Monday after recovering from surgery to remove loose bodies in his right elbow on March 22, but it's unknown if the Rays will reinstate him just yet. The 12th overall pick in 2017 has a 20:4 K:BB ratio in 13 rehab innings while limiting opponents to only two runs and a .167 average. Baz should be stashed everywhere.

Tue May 31 202210:01Shane Baz Throws Four Scoreless Innings At Triple-A
Tampa Bay Rays starting pitcher Shane Baz (elbow) made his third and longest rehab start yet at Triple-A Durham on Monday. He pitched four scoreless innings, allowing one hit and one walk while striking out four. Across his three rehab outings, Baz has pitched to a 1.04 ERA and a 0.91 WHIP. Baz underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right elbow this spring and has been working his way back ever since. The 22-year-old looked great in his first taste of the majors last year, pitching to a 2.03 ERA and a 0.68 WHIP over 13.1 innings. He's worthy of stashing on an IL spot in just about all fantasy leagues. His exact timeline isn't entirely clear, but he may only need one or two more rehab starts before joining the Rays once again.

Thu May 26 202214:02Shane Baz Makes Second Rehab Start
Tampa Bay Rays right-hander Shane Baz (elbow) made his second minor league rehab start for Triple-A Durham on Wednesday and tossed 2 1/3 shutout innings while giving up two hits, walking two and striking out one. The 22-year-old prospect missed the first six weeks of the season after having arthroscopic elbow surgery, but he's getting closer to a return to the Rays rotation. Tampa will want to see Baz get stretched out a little more before having him make his season debut at some point in June, but fantasy managers in deeper leagues should be stashing him now if he's available on the waiver wire. He allowed three earned runs while walking three and striking out 18 in his first 13 1/3 major league innings in 2021 in three starts.

Thu May 19 202221:36Shane Baz Throws 24 Pitches In Rehab Assignment
Tampa Bay Rays pitcher Shane Baz (elbow) allowed one run on a hit while striking out five with no walks across 2 1/3 innings in Thursday's rehab appearance with Triple-A Durham. His only mistake was surrendering a solo shot to Lewin Diaz. He threw 24 pitches, landing 19 for strikes. It was the right-hander's first start since October. The 22-year-old is on the 60-day injured list and won't be able to return until early June. Baz is expected to make few rehab appearances with Triple-A Durham until he's ready to return to the big leagues. Fantasy managers should continue to stash Baz on their rosters in all league formats.

Wed May 18 202211:52Shane Baz To Start Rehab Assignment Thursday
Tampa Bay Rays right-hander Shane Baz (elbow) will start his minor league rehab assignment on Thursday with Triple-A Durham, and he is slated to throw two innings. Baz had arthroscopic surgery on his elbow in March and has been rehabbing ever since. The 22-year-old, who is the team's top prospect according to MLB Pipeline, will need multiple rehab outings before the Rays feel comfortable having him make his season debut. Fantasy managers should already have him stashed, though, after he posted an impressive 2.03 ERA and 0.68 WHIP with 18 strikeouts in his first 13 1/3 major league innings in 2021. Baz will be eligible to return from the injured list on June 6.

Tampa Bay Rays right-hander Shane Baz (elbow), who had arthroscopic surgery on his right elbow in the spring, is throwing bullpen sessions and could start facing hitters in live batting practice soon. Barring any setbacks, Baz could be ready when he's eligible to return from the 60-day injured list on June 6. On a more ominous note, left-hander Brendan McKay (shoulder), who is recovering from surgery for thoracic outlet syndrome, has been shut down for at least a few days due to soreness in his surgically repaired left shoulder. In other rehab news, reliever Ryan Yarbrough (groin) will make his second rehab start on Thursday for Triple-A Durham. Nick Anderson (elbow) is throwing bullpens, while Tyler Glasnow (elbow) and Yonny Chirinos (elbow) are playing catch.
